Wings of Freedom Tour 2010

15 posts in this topic

I was able to get over to the Westchester County Airport yesterday to view the B-17G, the B-24J and TP-52C that the Collings Foundation ( http://cfdn.org/ ) brought for display. Here are the photos I took. Unfortunately I also found out when I got there that I had broken my main lens , so I was unable to zoom in or pan out.

First the B-24J "Witchcraft'. It is the only flying example of a Liberator left.

Waist gunner position, there just happened to be a private plane marked to look like a WW II Japanese plane, on the field. Appropriate since this aircraft was used by the British out of India.

Looking towards the rear, at the waist gunner positions, the piping in the front is for the ball turret

A look inside of the ball turret, from outside the plane, looking towards the tail. The black part at the bottom is the seat, and towards the top are two 'stirrups' for your feet

While there, we got to watch 'Betty Jane' take off, someone had purchased flight time ($2200 for a half hour, or $3200 for a full hour) Rides were also available in the bomber for $425

I live about 30 miles from "Fantasy of Flight" in Florida. Many old war birds are stored and flown out of there. There is a B-25 that frequently orbits the Orlando metro area on clear sky weekends. Nothing better than the sound of those old radial engines.

Whomever told you that Witchcraft is the only flying B-24 left had incorrect info. There are three still known to fly. Fantasy of Flight has frequently flown example... link below.

There is another out of Texas operated by the Commemorative Air Force

MFC,

Just went with the info on the display board next to the aircraft. Good to know there are still other examples.
