Kings Court Apartments fire victims stay in shelter; candles caused blaze, chief says

The Mid-Hudson Civic Center will remain a temporary shelter at least through Monday for about two dozen residents of a City of Poughkeepsie apartment building severely damaged by fire Friday morning, American Red Cross of the Mid-Hudson Valley officials said.

City Fire Chief Mark Johnson said investigators had determined the blaze, which roared through the five-story, 65-unit Kings Court Apartments on Cannon Street, was ignited by candles in apartment 410 that were either lit or recently put out. The heat from the candles transferred to the table they were on before flames traveled through a hole in the wall and spread, Johnson said.

Just to clarify, MLSS actually had 6 units involved (with 3 others covering the city), as well as SORT rehab operations in progress. Every agency on scene showed a great amount of teamwork and professionalism. Well done by all.
