OLIVE — An off-duty town of Ulster police officer was killed in a car accident Friday night on state Route 28, according to former Ulster Supervisor Nicky Woerner.

Travis Nissen, 27, died when his car went off the road and struck a utility pole about 10:30 p.m., according to online reports.

Nissen, a Shokan resident, was in a private vehicle when the accident happened, according to police. Woerner said he Nissen had been with the town police department since 2007 and became the school resource officer at M. Clifford Middle School in Ulster in 2008.

Nissen’s wife, Kristy, is a teacher at Miller.

Woerner said he considered Nissen “a very close, personal friend” and that the officer’s death is “very tragic.”

“He devoted his life to the citizens of Ulster and to the children of Miller School,” Woerner said

Rest in peace. It's an awful week for the emergency service community.

Ill second that. Waaay too many emergency personnel have been taken recently.

RIP PO Nissen. 27 is very young, he had his whole life ahead of him.

My heart goes out to his wife, family, friends, fellow LEOs and to the students and staff at M. Clifford Middle School.
