Yonkers - 2-Alarm Working Fire -- 7/31/12

Location: 14 Overlook Terrace x Locust Hill Avenue, Yonkers, NY

Frequency: YFD

Units Operating: Yonkers Fire Department- 36 FFs knocked down main body of fire, then appx. another 15 more FFs were involved from that point on.

Box 3172 Assignment:

Engines 303, 306, 309, 308;

Tower Ladders 71, 72;

Rescue 1;

Battalion 1.

10-30 (All-Hands) Assignment / 2nd-Alarm(?):

Engines 312 (FAST, 5th Special Call Eng.), 310 (6th S/C Eng.);

Tower Ladder 75 (S/C);

Battalion 2 (Safety);

Car 6 (Fire Investigation Unit) (?).

[There are conflicting reports if its a Single or Double Alarm. A 2-Alarm might not have been called, but enough rigs were there for it to be a 2-Alarm.]

Weather Conditions:

Description of Incident: 2-Alarm [or Single Alarm, see explanation above] Working Fire on the 1st floor of a 3-story wood-frame OMD. Upon arrival, flames visible from outside first and second floor walls. Primary searches were negative, as all the residents evacuated before FD arrival after hearing smoke alarms. 3 L/S/O's. Fire was knocked down within an hour. 1st (especially bathroom and kitchen) and 2nd floor sustained significant fire and smoke damage, and electricity and gas were turned off. 3 minor FF injuries reported, no civilian injuries. Fire started in faulty outlet of first-floor bathroom. Cause was determined to be electrical, the outlet had been smoldering and sparking for days. Red Cross, with OEM's help, is providing emergency aid to the 21 displaced residents of five apartments.

03:44 hrs: Call came in.

03:53 hrs: Battalion 1 transmitting Signal 10-30 (All-Hands) for fire on 1st floor of a 3-story OMD. Battalion 2 responding as Safety.

04:01 hrs: Battalion 1 reports fire in the walls on 1st floor with extension to 2nd floor. 3 lines stretched and 1 in operation. Building evacuated, and primary searches negative.

04:17 hrs: Battalion 1 reports fire K/D, and checking for extension.

04:30 hrs: Battalion 1 S/C extra Engine and Truck. S/C is E-310 and TL-75.

05:01 hrs: Declared under control.

07:00 (appx.) hrs: E-310 and TL-75 remaining on-scene. Relocated Companies returning. Red Cross volunteers are on-scene working with OEM to help displaced residents.

11:00 (appx.) hrs: Red Cross clears the scene.
