Yonkers Spare Engine 318 Catches Fire

I guess its going to be hard to get replacement parts for this YFD Spare Rig now, with American LaFrance out of business :)

* Must have been shocking for the YFD Engine Company who got the call for a "Truck Fire" at Fire Station # 3, arriving to see that the "Truck" was actually one of their own apparatus.

(But with 317 and 319 still available and the likelihood that once Engine 303 gets replaced later this year (along with Engine 313) and probably that old one going in as the replacement for Spare 318, Yonkers is naturally, as always, in great shape, apparatus wise)

Not really a problem... Unless the chassis fails just about everything else is standard sheet metal or readily available parts from Cummins, CAT, Detroit Diesel, Allison, Meritor, Eaton, Hale, Darley, etc. there wasn't much that was proprietary on ALF rigs after the 1980's.

3-Engine was going on a run when it occurred. The guys jumped out and starting extinguishing it. Shop said its repairable. We are not in as great shape as you think with apparatus or spares.

I don't necessarily think your post was in response to mine, but I did want to put it out that I was speaking generically about ALF rigs being serviceable in light of the corporate failure... Not per se the YFD's struggle to maintain the fleet.

Not true. We have been going thru many minor parts that are critical to keeping the rigs in-service. Door handles are a big item. if you can't close the door you are out of service and they are an ALF only part. Lots of other minor issues that are critical.

Also LTI components are an issue.

Well Barry, as usual you have brought something to my attention that I wasn't thinking about. Minor parts truly could become a hassle as time goes on.

More than just a hassle, when rigs go out of service for up to weeks at a time waiting for a minor part.

Also have had to replaced cracked dashboards & engine covers.

We had issues with door handles on our 2005 ALF ladder. At the time it was built, ALF was somehow tied to Daimler-Benz, which included(somehow) Chrysler group. We actually have jeep Cherokees and a Dodge Durango with the same door handles. We ordered the replacements right at the dodge dealer, with a jeep part number.

I know of a nice Mack CF if YFD needs to borrow it.

Just like the old days in Yonkers. (Yellow)

LOL!
