I thought that the Rescue and Squad companies and also the SOC companies carried gear, not sure though.

Latest word has it is ALL FDNY apparatus is dumping their hazmat gear for NYPD's trucks. Once the transistion is complete, FDNY will no longer respond to hazmat jobs. 8)

Let's just say that if the NYPD does take over all hazmat incidents, will the team be made of regular cops with state hazmat training? I'd think they would still have FD on the scene though. Anyone know how that works?

Lets remember one big thing here with the NYPD/FDNY Hazmat issue.

FDNY will allways have a key role in Hazmat, that will never change. Yes it's true the NYPD will be the IC at Hazmat jobs. However FDNY is in charge of Decon and Life Safety. Life Safety is #1 and nothing can come in the way of that.

Now lets look at Fire Operations. At a Fire what is the #1 life saving tool?????? A Properly placed hose line.

So when we look at Hazmat if in order to accomplish Life safety means we need to stop a leak, plug a hole, etc we are going to do that. Makes no sense to work on patients if we can limit the amount of patients.

So if FDNY doesn't respond to hazmat calls anymore, the NYPD units would have to get fire apparatus also? Hazmat incidents should be handled by the FD and Hazmat team, in my opinion.

Before anyone else takes this statement literal, the post was meant as sarcasm, to a point.

It isn't far off when you hear about the isolated incidents when the FD gets "shut out" by PD. Unfortunately we never hear from both sides when these issues happen. We just hear these monotone statements from Mayor Bloomy, with Mayor Kelly and Mr Magoo by his side.

All haz-mat scenes should be under ful care of FDNY not NYPD not that i think they would not do a good job but FDNY are trained in haz-mat and shouls be the ones to cover them while the police keep a secure area out side the haz-mat zone like keeping people back and closing streets things like that.
