FDNY thawing units ?

10 posts in this topic

FDNY's Thawing Units go around to all the frozen hydrants. They open up the hydrants and stick a tube down there to de-ice the the frozen water. Each hydrant they do takes about 20 mintes. FDNY has like 3 of these units.

Found this information about FDNY Thawing units.

I was wondering if they work well and do they thaw hydrants during the fire? or hydrants that are covered and look frozen after the alarm?

Also ,,perhaps tbendick can submit some photos of the unit in operation. Thanks

There's actually 5 of them. Depending on the weather, they go out on patrol and thaw out certain hydrants over the course of the day. They can be special called to incidents when needed.

As JBE said there is a Thawing rig in each borough. They are numbered to match the Engine Company they are housed with. I think they are located @ E330, E266, E97?, E76, E151.

As far as them working well. This is a Yes/ No Answer.

Yes they do thaw the hydrants.

Biggest problem is that most of the hydrants that they are thawing are ones they don't shut down all the way and leak. So on Monday they could thaw every hydrant but by Tuesday night they are all frozen again.

just an FYI, but the Thawing units are usually manned by detail personnel.
