"About 12 years ago a study was done that indicated emergency medical technicians were being injured about 12 percent of their injuries were as a result of violence. A study that was just completed last month by the National Association of Emergency Technicians showed that 52 percent of all EMTs have reported being assaulted at least once in their careers," said Bill Tricarico, McNeil and Company.

VIPER is a new program that trains firefighters and E-M-Ts to protect themselves.

The Cortland McNeil and Company developed it. VIPER stands for Violence Intervention by Prevention for Emergency Responders.

"We require our members to go through vast amounts of training. Most of the training is technical, hands-on, what they're going to encounter on the call. This is the first time I've seen a course of this nature that actually discusses some of the other things that may happen on a call that we need to be aware of as well," said David Denniston, Chief of Cortlandville Fire Department.

The program runs on CD-Rom and includes a student workbook and interactive training presentation. The plan is to get this CD into the hands of as many emergency workers as possible.

"Obviously from the statistics it's happening more and more and folks who are not sued to getting involved in these kinds of violent situations find themselves in it very quickly if they're not aware of what's happening around them," said Denniston.

Tricarico says McNeil and Company already made the program available to its customers in 48 states.

It's free, but he says it's also priceless, if it helps prevent a violent situation and save a life.
