Former Westchester Deputy Fire Coordinator passed at the age of 75.

William H. Whalen, Jr., age 75, of Poughkeepsie, NY, passed away in his sleep at home February 7, 2006. He was born in Mt. Kisco, NY on July 19, 1930 to Katherine Lee and William Whalen. He attended St. Francis Elementary School in Mt. Kisco and St. Mary's High School in Katonah and graduated Mt. Kisco High School in 1949. At the young age of 19, he married Elinor Nehls. That same year, he embarked on a long and distinguished career as a businessman with the founding of Whalen's Package Express, which later became Whalen's Moving & Storage of Mount Kisco. He devoted much time to the moving industry and some of his professional accomplishments include Vice Chairman of Allied Van Lines, President of New York State Movers Association, and he was listed in Who's Who in America. His many awards include the Paul Harris Fellowship of Rotary International, and Citizen of the Year recognition from The Mount Kisco Chamber of Commerce and Sisqua Council, Knights of Columbus. While serving numerous community organizations, some of his achievements include Chief and lifelong member of the Mt. Kisco Fire Department, President of the Independent Fire Company, Chairman of the Board for the Bedford Hills Fire Commissioners, Westchester County Deputy Fire Coordinator, Trustee of Northern Westchester Hospital Center, Mount Kisco Boys Club and Manhattan Savings Bank, President of St. Mary's Parish Council, Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 16, Rotary Club of Mt. Kisco, Mt. Kisco Chamber of Commerce. He was also involved in Meals-onWheels and Friends in Service to Helping Others. He was a parishioner at Church of the Holy Trinity since moving to Poughkeepsie in 1998. Bill leaves behind his beautiful bride and best friend of 56 years, Elinor Nehls Whalen, and their five children. Their children include: William H. Whalen III and his wife Linda of Newburgh, Kathleen Whalen Nerf and her husband Thomas of La Grange, Maureen Whalen Rosati and her husband Salvatore of South Salem, Peggy Whalen Swingle of La Grange, and Michael Whalen and his wife Peggy of Pound Ridge. His fourteen grandchildren, who he loved to spoil are: William Whalen IV, Sara Whalen White, Maryellen Nerf, Kara Steffensen, Kristine Jackson, Susan Nerf, Danielle Rosati, Lee Swingle, Keith Swingle, Erik Swingle, Michael Whalen, Jr., Matthew Whalen, Meredith Whalen and Katherine Nerf. Three great-grandchildren include: Trent Jackson, Abigail Jackson and Ian White. He was predeceased by his brother James Whalen. He lived life to the fullest and especially enjoyed fishing at his lake house, playing cards, telling jokes, and helping others. He will be remembered most for his unselfish commitment to family, friends and community.

I had the privelege of meeting Mr. Whalen on certain occasions a while back. He was a true gentleman. May he rest in peace.

bill was a tremendous individual. i wish there were more people like him. he will be missed dearly.
