  1. Wow, this one hits close to home. Jack was the uncle of my good friend Robert, who I've known since high school. I met Jack this year when his brother, Robert Sr., was in the hospital. RIP, uncle Jack.
  2. Speaking of the lightbar on the Diplomat, I have never seen NYPD RMPs in the 80s with red lenses on the outside corners. It was two red flashers in front on the inside adjacent to the siren grille, and two amber flashers on the rear inside. Outside lenses were clear, with white and red rotators. They were operated by two separate switches - flashing lights and rotating lights. Not to nitpick or anything : ) Back to the picture though - awesome cars and I would love to know more about them! Thanks!
  3. I agree with you that NYPD used the Gran Furys, but this looks like a Diplomat - look at the top of the grille. 5 letters looks like Dodge to me. The Gran Fury had "Plymouth". Perhaps a movie prop or some other mockup?
  4. Did someone say Crown Vics only get an average of 7 MPG?? Even in my most aggressive driving, never got that low. I get about 15-20 on a regular basis with mixed driving - maybe that figure of 7 was a result of someone figuring in hours and hours of idling time. Also, fun fact - I recently watched a Ford ad from 1960 - yes, 1960 - where they touted the new Falcon as getting up to 30 MPG. 30 MPG, over 50 years ago, for a four door rear wheel drive sedan. One wonders what happened to fuel efficiency technology since then...
  5. Good point. 2006 and newer Ford CVPI's come with an hour meter on the speedometer.
  6. Don't forget to scan craigslist (explore different regions too - I travelled to south Jersey to buy my car) - and scrutinize each ad carefully! Make a checklist of the things you want/don't want. I looked for several months before I found an 05 CVPI with 42K Miles. Was a take home CSP Trooper car, retired at low mileage and bought by another cop to use for contract detective work. I bought it from him. If you can, try to find an administrative car (no cage holes, comes with carpet, etc.) I've had her almost 2 years now, and it was absolutely one of the best vehicles that I've invested in.

  8. Great pics, Anesti. I saw the plume from Central Ave north of Tuckahoe Rd. It was a 3rd until the 10-66 (maydays) were transmitted - per dispatch policy, that's an additional alarm.
  9. I had a radio that would only connect to my laptop if it was plugged into one specific USB port (of 4). Try all of your USB ports. Something about different COM numbers assigned to each port.
  10. As someone who is relatively new to the "amateur" radio scene, as well as a member of WECA - We do maintain a public safety liaison with DES. I am far too new to know the details of how that unit responds to emergencies, if at all. I will check on it and get back to you all. Ham radio is still a growing hobby, and there are many opportunities within to gain experience in emergency radio communications, such as RACES, ARES, Skywarn, and even MARS. WECA hosts a training session at the County Center every month that includes these topics, and others such as military communications, digital radios, etc. The folks there are very knowledgeable, and come from a wide variety of backgrounds - including public safety. Most hams are well aware of proper operating procedures (we have to take a very detailed test to get a license) and would never interfere with public safety communications on any level. I wouldn't quite call it paralleling - perhaps redundancy Please contact me if you have any questions about amateur radio or its role in public safety. Adam (KD2AYV - Southern District Net Control Station)
  11. Cool. I'll be up there in June, see ya there. Was that the big or little Waukesha gas engine??
  12. I say 1939-ish Walter up front. Fender shape and front frame location look remarkably similar.
  13. Tell Spack that Garrison says "EYYYY!"
  14. Since YFD has recently adopted the FDNY style "(source) alarm, box xxxx" as alarm dispatch policy on the radio, can anyone provide a list of box locations? I've been looking around awhile for this There does seem to be both rhyme and reason to the box numbering system - southern boxes are in the 1xxx numbers, and up here in the northern Yonkers boonies, it seems to be 6xxx and 7xxx boxes. Some research seems to indicate that they were numbered as they were installed - but all were removed in about 1990. Thanks!
  15. Thanks for that information, K! Apparently, I'm around box 66xx. Awaiting Jamie's box program from the AC, but at least I now I have an idea of what's happening where up here in Yonkiz... Again, thanks, and stay safe. Adam
  16. Excellent question - I've wondered that myself. I guess we'll see how the law changes to deal with that. Perhaps they'll tie it into the "using cellular device while driving" laws? In the meantime, I'm glad I have my Amateur Radio License....
  17. RIP Joey D...also former Bronx Dispatcher 356.
  18. One disadvantage of digital is if your signal to noise ratio drops below a certain point, the receiving station gets nothing. Not like analog where you could be heard weakly with a little static. With digital, it's either receive or not. Called digital cliff drop - if you get too close to the edge, you fall off....
  19. Nice photo of that GMC. Facing Abendroth on Adee, north of the hardware store?
  20. And some video I shot at the show -
  21. Is that where Walgreens stands today?
  22. Photos from today - nice rigs! Poughkeepsie Apparatus Show - my Facebook album
  23. H.E.L.P... anyone know what that acronym was for? Harlem Eastside Lifesaving Program? Wasn't there a show on NBC about that? Nice shots, Anesti. I remember seeing all of those vehicles. Nice shot of the Air Bag truck, too. Thanks!
  24. Afternoon. 2-2-3769. I grabbed audio from the video a while ago. http://www.firegroundphotos.net/bronxco/3769-1.wav I was 11 or 12 at the time as well. Sorry to kinda hijack yer thread, buddy! Any more shots from the 50 precinct?
  25. Nice. That's 3605 Kingsbridge avenue in the background, just north of W236th st. There was a second alarm there in August of 1992 or so that took out the whole top floor on the north side of the building. I have it on VHS somewhere at my parents place in the Bronx - I should convert it someday! You could always tell when there was a pin job on the Deegan by the very distinctive SP Mark 7 sirens on those old ESU trucks getting on at Van Cortlandt Park S. Good nostalgia. Thanks.
