  1. Chief- congrats on your retirement, your dedication to the fire service outweighs many. To share the knowledge to us behind you made us better in the Fire Service career. Enjoy- JJC
  2. Montrose FD- early to mid 60s.
  3. Does your dept actively use a fast team from within your own dept or does it rely on a mutual aid team, IMO 2 guys standing in front of the fire scene with no formal training is nothing but a smokescreen to cover their butt. How does your dept cover the mandate. I know for career depts manpower is often the issue!
  4. How many since 1982-83?
  5. CFI 609 - very accurate and truthful remark!
  6. Date:11-23-13 Time: 0958 Incident Type:Structure Fire Location:135 East Cedar St District: Mount Vernon Units:Engine 6,4,3 L2,Tl1. Car 2 (Captain) Description Structure Fire 1001- 2nd Alarm Mutual aid to cover- ladder 3 out of service
  7. With regret I pass on the info of the untimely death of Michael Dobbins of the Mount Vernon Fire Department. Mike was a 9 year member of the Department who was loved by all. A strong hard working individual that had a work ethic respected by all . Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Dobbins Family and friends. Service arrangements will be posted after they are finalized.RIP Brother!
  8. I think my concern or point is that if one of my fellow firefighters go down while at a fire where I work it would be a sad outcome! "smoke Screen " still applies here and in reality the 2 members standing by are there to cover the 2 in 2 out then that means we have NO fast team at all at every fire!
  9. Barry I should have probably been more direct when I posted the question, either way its all a smokescreen for many :-), sorry about bringing this up again but it hit home for me recently. Be safe!
  10. What's the difference between a civil service Fire Chief and a Fire Chief appointed by a Mayor, board of commissioners, town board etc? What are the rules and guidelines?
  11. For those of you that didnt know it that quote from above was the Mayors statement! Thnx for the support to all.
  12. KS- my mistake, they are not state Techs which eliminates the Guard requirement, I believe they are in the CSEA and at one point a push was to get into the IAFF.
  13. After all - "For the most part we have a good Fire Department" :-)
  14. Firecapt- you said it right. The odds were against us from the get go! IMO we did our best and went above and beyond. I'm sure in the long run the investigation that will be conducted would show that . A delay in calling the FD? Maybe- the press is ripping us apart and we who were there all have deep sadness for the family involved. May they all RIP!
  15. You don't need to be in the Guard to work as a civilian, that has changed over the years. The sad thing is that the civilians who work as firefighters are not recognized by NYS as Firefighters! How screwed up is that? A battle that has been fought in the past with negative results! If anyone is interested in joining the Air guard please reach out to me !
  16. I was at the ceremony for TJ at Stewart AFB, a well attended ceremony and well organized. I didn't know Todd but I knew both his mom n dad from Stewart. God bless TJ and his family and friends as well as the 105th Security Squadron!
  17. I can remember 1 communications operator, one phone to answer, can't remember the pay- a lot of changes since I was there back in 1983-86. #609. :-)
  18. A 33 year old Firefighter was killed last night in Calumet County WI while fighting a fire in a dumpster. The Fire Department was notified via the PD of the Fire, as crews were engaged in Firefighting when i violet explosion occured killing the one firefighter and injuring 9 others. One firefighter is listed in crital condition and the 8 others had non life threatening injuries. Neighbors said that the explosion was strong enough to rock their homes. An investigation is underway. As we are aall very much aware of any incident might end up with bad results. In dumpsters you never know what may be in the dumpster. Be safe out there!

  20. Sad and tragic news, thoughts and prayers to the Morris family and NRFD family.
  21. A few years ago a family friend had a fire and the cause was the smart meter, after the fire I googled smart meters and could not believe how many fires have been caused by the meters. A major news station even did a story about a $600,000 house in mid westchester burning down just hours after the meter was installed. Have you had any experiences with the meter? Interesting reading about health hazards as well as fires!
  22. When it comes to reality, the last thing that politicians worry about is its citizens and its workforce, in this case the Fire Dept!!!
  23. As I approach my 24 yr anniversary with FDMV I honestly feel that manning will be the same issue well after I retire, fire Chiefs/union leaders in the past and present know that we are well understaffed. Politics as usual here. Does the dept reduce the apparatus from 4 engines,3 trucks, Res 1(in and out of service) down to 2 engines,1 truck and man the rigs with 3 or 4 firefighters and an officer to properly man the rigs? Last year I was individually assigned to eng 4 on the west side and many times we ran with 3 firefighters and an officer. What a difference 1 additional member made on that rig. Because of staffing during peak vacation time it was reduced to a 2 man eng co. and it was the same old story. Great department with politicians ruling the helm!
  24. Limited manpower- 2 man engine companys, 3 man truck companys- then as members went out for various injuries it sounds like an issue with call back of off duty members! Same story different fire!!! 1st due assignment usually has 13 firefighters,3-4 officers then the working Deputy Chief. If its a fire the Deputy will call the remaining Engine (2guys) remaining Truck (3 guys) (if it is not out of service). Then mutual aid will be called.
