  1. Bill, I have an original on that 1920 picture also! Dadbo filled in along with CPage the dates of some of the rigs in the pictures. I will add to that. The Rescue is a 1965 Mack and served the department to 1977. I served many years on the Rescue as FF, LT, and company commander. It was a great rig staffed by great firefighters always anxious to challenge the red devil, and Mount Vernon then, as now, gave us plenty of work. The 1958 Mack piumper was assigned to Engine 5 and then in the 70's became a spare. When the rig was originally delivered in 1958 it had a roof and was sent back to Mack to have it cut off. It didn't look like the open cabbed Seagraves! It would be the next to last rig without roof . The last was Truck 3, a 1960 ALF 4 section 100 foot ladder made to fit in old Truck 3's quarters on South Fifth Avenue whih was closed in December of 1962 when the present Station 2 was opened. The Snorkel is a 1977, Truck a 1967 ALF, Truck 2 a 1968 ALF and the Foam Truck was a 1950 Seagrave. The Foam Truck was a first line apparatus in Mount Vernon for many years. At one time the Oil City storage area in MV was the third largest oil storage depot on the east coast. The Foam Truck responded to two major oil fires in Brooklyn on the Gowanus Canal during the 70's and was the model for the units they eventually placed into srvice back then.

  6. For those who may be interested, A little FDNY Fire History. Video from the Park Slope Air Plane collision over Brooklyn (12/16/60) and the aircraft carrier USS Constellation fire (12/19/60). Both incidents in December of 1960. I remember! chiefhac Click on: Also: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ks0PGUpygmI&feature=related Further information from FDNY Rescue 2: http://www.fdnyrescue2.com/history.php - Plane crash, Park Slope Brooklyn, December 16, 1960 Two airliners collided in mid-air over New York Harbor. The first aircraft, a TWA Constellation crashed into a Military airfield on Staten Island. 44 bodies were recovered from the Staten Island Site. The second aircraft, a United DC-8 crashed into Brooklyn's Park Slope neighborhood. R-2 members operated for almost 72 hours continuously at the crash location of Sterling Pl. and 7th Ave. Rescues 1 and 4 also operated at this incident. The Rescue units deployed many of their specialized equipment to both combat the fire and search through the wreckage and debris. - Aircraft Carrier Constellation, December 19 ,1960 All five rescue companies operated at the fire aboard this vessel under construction. The fire had trapped many workers below decks. Rescue members used their masks and torches extensively to gain access to the trapped workers. Many risky and challenging rescues were made at this incident. The companies also made use of every available inhalator and resuscitator. 50 workers were killed, and over 385 were injured.

  8. Maybe one day the salary structure will reflect the dedication of the dispatchers, their duties and responsibilites, and the vital role they play in the field of emergency response. Improved salary and benefits, including a 25 year retirement plan, not only reduces job turnover, but boosts morale. Keep up the great work!
  9. Yes! The rescue truck pictured was sold at auction by the city. Looking at that picture and the firehouse behind it bring back many pleasant memories of the 60' and 70's. FDMV was the job and the Rescue Company the best assignment. I worked with some of the best FF's in Mount Vernon serving as a FF, Lt, and finally captain-company commander. A salute to all the men I worked with, and a salute to all who work their now under very trying conditions.

  11. Snotty has the information correct with a few additions. The show was called "On the Job" and most of them were hosted by FF Dick Nagle long before he went on to bigger and better things. The show was on UHF Channel 31, WNYC and required a special converter cause back then you only had 13 channels. The program was on at 1 PM and repeated again at 6:60 PM and was on a couple of times each week. Mount Vernon FD installed the converters in all stations and the program became part of our drill schedule as it probably did for other smaller departments that were within range of the UHF broadcast. It provided lots of valuable information to those of us in the fire service at the time.
  12. Chris was all things to all men. He was a fellow firefighter, a communicator, a publisher, a legislative watchdog, an enactor of legislation (the self extinguishing cigarette), a lay minister who loved his God, a husband, and a friend to many with a cheerful smile and a wink in his eye. I was proud to call Chris my friend and I offer my sincere condolences to Harriette and the family. May God Bless him and welcome him home, and may He bring strength and comfort to Harriette.
  13. Thank You one and all for your friendship over the years. There is no better second family than the fire service and the people within it who make it happen. God Bless you all! And yes, I am still holding my own!

  16. Thanks for the nice words! That fire (Fanny Farmer, Fourth Avenue and First Street was March 3, 1980.
  17. From an apparatus view point that Mack Rescue served the department and the city well, once again the city getting the most for its tax dollar. From the mid 60's to 1977 that rig responded to all fires and emergencies within Mount Vernon and sometimes neighboring communities, it was a very busy time for the fire department in Mount Vernon. I am proud to say I worked that company as a firefighter, driver, and fire oficer for more than 13 years with some of the best firefighters Mount Vernon ever had. One big happy family that couldn't wait to go to work, and work it did! It was a great time in the history of the Mount Vernion Fire Department.
