  1. The chairs work amazingly fast. The user will experience some discomfort in the arms, due to the cold. Within 5 mins. All have stated that they feel a cooling sensation going up their spine. Shortly after they say they do feel a lot colder. Some even saying that they feel the coolness when they breathe. What’s nice, besides cooling, we are able to get the firefighter out of the gear … have them sitting and make it easier for medical evaluation. We are using the Kore Kooler Chair.
  2. 68-45 was only OOS for a few hours on 6/30 to put in the new headphone mikes
  3. The Viallage of Wappingers got grant money to buy 4 active cooling chairs (we have already tried them and they are amazing they cool by soaking your arms in cold water), A 10x10 tent with sides, 2 fully stocked BLS bags with O2, 20 cases of water, 4 cases of energy bars.
  4. A great web site to help you with rehab and CO questions is http://www.firerehab.com/
  5. I watched Pirates of the Caribbean all weekend .. never saw what happened there. Quote from firefighter on top of ladder “ Hi mam …. Nice day isn’t it?”
  6. Us old ones .... (and hate to use this term makes me feel older) are sort of grandfathered in Still need Essentials and Initial Fire Attack was pretty common "back in the day" to get both and before this gets to be a young vs old thing .... when I 1st started out as a firefighter was told this by and instructor "Two bulls are standing on the hill. The little bull jumps up and down and yells, "Hey, let's run down the hill, find the best looking heifer and do it right." The old bull looks down at the young bull and says, "Let's walk down the hill and do them all"
  7. As far as firefighting ... Yes NY State does have more the Standards they have laws I just did a search on Vol fire companies through OSHA and there were some 205 Vol Fire compaines over the last 10 years for not following OSHA requirements. See this link http://osha.gov/pls/imis/establishment.sea...;startyear=2008 You may want to look at this firehouse story too http://www.firehouse.com/training/news/200...dict_watch.html
  8. The following is required in NY State and for the most part any state. Ok Firefighter 1 will be a minimum Haz-Com (right-to-know) is needed for every firefighter before in service ( int & ext firefighters) requited by OSHA and NY State Dept of Health Infection control (notices I said this not bloodborne pathogens, because NY State (PESH) requires bloodborne, tuberculosis, and Lymes) both int and ext firefighters Haz-Mat at the operations level (you will get in firefighter 1) Firefighter 1 will also take care of a Initial OSHA Safety … required by PESH Respiratory protection .. SCBA all that fun stuff … you will get in FF1 NIMS Basic (Federal requirement … every one needs this, pretty soon you will not be able to get grant money without it) You will need a Physical (Medical) Exam included in that will be a Respiratory Medical Exam A fit test on the SCBA and another other respiratory protection you use (ex. an N-95 mask, which most EMS workers use is a respirator and requires a fit test and respiratory clearance exam. In fact and paper mask that has a NIOSH certification on the box is a respirator. You should have Firefighter Survival, but not required Oh by the way ..... NY State does regulate Vol Firefighters (sorry but they do) under PESH Public Employee Safety and Health, a part of the Dept of Labor. Even though as a Vol and you dont get "paid", since you are under the Volunteer Benifits Law (which is like workers comp) you are considered an unpaid employee. Hope this helps
  9. Hey Joe Thanks for your help also .... you and your guys worked your asses off for sure
  10. Not commenting on the refusal of m/a; m/a was called for manpower which was beyond the preplanned amount
  11. Ok I WAS there and KNOW the area well ..... #1 The village isnt ladder friendly ..... nor is it water source friendly #2 That WAS the best position for the ladder due to wires and parked cars ... it is a narrow rd with cars on both sides of the rd #3 the 5" line had to come from RT 9D where the larger main is. Which is some what of a distance from the fire. What you dont see is that 5" line came up 3 blocks from the main rd to the side street to the fire scene ... so not a stright lay. The line was around the car ... but got kinked and laid over the car. Honestly .... I WAS the 1st firefighter and officer on that job ... I was on the scene when the tones where still going off ... because I saw the smoke before the tones went out .... That annex where the fire was started was burning wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy before the people in that home called it in. AND ..... for those who didn't know .... one of the Fire Dept's that helped out ... is a paid dept. We work very well in the area with the paid depts up here.
  12. The area is bigger then that ....... it goes as far north as Gilboa which is past hunter mt and far west as Deposit NY which is not far from Binghamton Haz-Mat is done by DEP Haz-Mat which is different
  13. Well all firefighters both Vol and career need to pass a physical exam too so at that age amd medical cond I hope the dr didnt make him a int FF
  14. It is a tragic event .... but no where did it say he was on duty ... If this happened on his shift during a meal break ... then it was a LODD in which he will get full benifits. But reading this ... it seems he was on his own time and nt working at the moment, so, he can't claim benifits. And for those who are about to say we are always on duty 24hrs a day ... well ... wish you be able to use that for a claim, but the insurance co's don't see it that way.
