  1. After a quick Google search, it would seem that filling SCUBA tanks off of FD Cascade systems is very common. However, the common warning that I found is in regards to air purity- i.e. the tank air we breath when engaged in firefighting operations does not need to be as pure as air being breathed while underwater. This is due to the fact that firefighting takes place at normal atmospheric pressure, while the pressures that can be present underwater during SCUBA operations might cause impurities in the tank air to become potentially dangerous. So basically, if you want to fill both SCBA and SCUBA tanks from the same system, make sure the air filters are up to the higher standard.

  6. Reminds me once again of something that our instructors in Truck Co. Ops said over and over again (and rightfully so): "In the fire service, as a whole, we don't throw enough ground ladders! (With the possible exception of Boston)" These guys were lucky that they were so close to the parapet and that one of them saw the collapse starting! Also a good example of teamwork... one guy can cut the roof while another keeps an eye out for changing conditions.
  7. Has anyone utilized the WCDES Internet Learning System? http://www.westchestergov.com/emergserv/ems/elearn.htm I am especially wondering if the Bloodborne Pathogens Awareness module that is available through this system qualifies for the required yearly OSHA refresher?
  8. Thanks for the information!

  17. Fire? They do that for an AFA! Seriously though, it shows their aggressive aerial placement and the advantages to the narrow/low profile of E-One's outriggers.
  18. Its a thin protective film, kinda like when you get a new DVD player and there is that film over the LCD display...
  19. Congrats to everyone at Purchase FD, this was a fantastic event and the new Engine looks great! Took some pics (with my own camera this time!), they can be seen at: http://s179.photobucket.com/albums/w303/ta...down%203-30-08/ ...if anyone is wondering why there is a Rye Garnets "G" flag hanging [backwards] from Purchase's HQ in some of the pictures- It magically disappeared from the turntable of Ladder 26 shortly after we got there, but was later recovered by its rightful owners. Just another chapter in the storied Rye/Harrison rivalry (Note to out-of-towners: Rivalry is between High School Football teams, not Fire Departments)
  20. How many square miles does the East Fishkill FD cover? ...and what is the government structure above the Fire Department? (i.e. Fire District, City, Town, Village, etc.)

  22. Myself and "ryefd192" will be "Shipping Up To Boston" tomorrow for the annual Dropkick Murphys show. If anyone else is going, just look for the two tallest least-Irish looking guys in the place! (This will be my 22nd Dropkicks show... I think I need to join a support group...)
  23. The horns are still installed at both firehouses, but are only hooked up to a momentary switch for manual activation. Before the renovation there was still a Gamewell-type system with a ticker-tape at both firehouses and a control box at HQ. You could dial in the box number and number of rounds. For example the Osborn Retirement Community is Box 315, so the horn would blast 3 times, pause, 1 time, pause, 5 times, longer pause, repeat the cycle twice more. Before Rye switched to 60-Control for dispatch, the Career Firefighter assigned to the Ladder would dispatch the alarm and set off the horns while he waited for a tillerman. The horn was tested every morning at 0800, and Saturday at Noon.
