  1. Hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable couple of days, whether on the job or waiting for tones to drop...
  2. If you read overconfidence in my words then you are mistaken. I knew by posting what I did someone would point out my age, right now I am a black helmet firefighter that likes to read a lot, and talk a lot about fire tactics and the service in general, from the discussions I have had with Jakes around the county who I respect immensely to those within my department who I respect in the same way - those are the conclusions that I have come to, very boiled down, and always fluid due to the fact that I at least am always learning.
  3. In general, a lack of size-up from all aspects of fire ground operations can be a real hazard, even if one little thing is missed by several layers, the potential for nasty things becomes larger. Situational awareness I have found is a built-in trait for some, and a very hard thing for others to acquire, how do we teach these people such things? I try to convey a 'big picture' kind of approach to it, try and break the tunnel that they might see with via a deep breath and a hopefully mentally regimented system before the incident.
  4. A few of us if we have nothing better to do will usually wind up at the firehouse waiting for tones, and in general just to catch up. But nothing uniformed, although there could be if requested by a Chief.
  5. FWD's for antiques, more modern E-One or Rosenbauer. Least is either American LaChance probably, although little experience with them, merely heresay from other Jakes.
  6. We love our '89 Mack R Series, she's a beast.
  7. Yes, it is an E-One cab.
  8. I have some ride and drive time with our 2000 Freightliner/E-One. It has taken a beating in comparison to our other apparatus due to the number of calls it rides out for, and it has held up relatively well. Some flexing of the passenger cab has caused some issues, but for the most part I can't complain too much. Other rescues from different manufacturers may hold up better though, time will tell for my experiences anyways, need a bit more with other makes to really tell.
  9. It is that time of year for many departments, including many last night. Just wanted to start a thread for folks to talk about their elections and post results if they want to. Last night, we at the Millerton Fire Company held our annual elections for officers of the 2010 calender year, and the results are as follows. Fire: Chief: Jason Watson Deputy Chief: Shawn Morrison Company Chief: Jim Milton Captain: Robbie Klippel 1st Lieutenant: Christopher Segelken 2nd Lieutenant: Joshua Schultz Rescue Squad: Rescue Squad Captain: Nancy Ellis Rescue Squad Lieutenants: Mark McAvoy and Donna Flynn Civil Officers: President: Lennie Morrison Vice President: Mike Segelken Treasurer: Al Andrews Secretary: Nancy Ellis
  10. I would like to reiterate what irishfire said, best of luck to all the new officers, and those who are continuing another year of service. Congrats, let's make this year a safe and productive one!
  11. Subjective, different departments, different levels of common sense and etc. etc.
  12. FF1 and Pump Ops for LT's and Capt. minimum. FF1, Pump Ops, Incident Command, and Hazmat for Chiefs. As to who decided, a committee of veteran firefighters and past officers.
  13. RIP
  14. I will grab my by-laws later, they are not right around me at the moment, just writing this here as a reminder...
  15. Unfortunate, hopefully BFD will successfully retrain their engineers, drivers, whatever they refer to them as in driving in general, and especially the "what to do's" in situations such as this one that lead to the LODD of Lt. Kelley. Are we providing adequate knowledge? I know I was trained in such matters when I started driving apparatus, hope I never have to use it obviously, but I also hope all apparatus operators know.
  16. I come straight here, everyone once in a blue moon I'll go there instead and look around.. but 95% of the time I shoot straight here.
  17. Certain certifications or courses, as well as a specific time of service in the department are necessary to hold office here. As you can guess, the number of courses and time ramp up the more bugles the position has.
  18. http://www.firehouse.com/topics/top-headlines/mass-firefighter-goes-against-procedure-save-woman Food for thought or fuel for fire?
  19. I would have a hard time with any type of phone medium response program, too focused on driving safely given the potential rush of adrenaline or adverse conditions on the road, and more simply, I have hardly any service around my house, which could mess up the efficiency in my use of said system. Response to the station or otherwise? I am a few miles from the barn so it depends on where it is and what time of day it is. Daytime I can usually make it to the station to grab a piece of equipment, but at night unless it is my duty night for EMS I am hard pressed to catch any rig let alone drive it. So the situation dictates the response, we have a pretty good organization as far as POV'ers responding who are appropriate in their response and staging/parking.
  20. Daytime EMS runs are whoever is around, night time we have a duty roster that is dedicated from 6-6 at night.
  21. Never forget the six brothers from Worcester. RIP Paul Brotherton, Tom Spencer, Joe McGuirk, Timothy Jackson, Jeremiah Lucey, and Jay Lyons.
  22. RIP Firefighter Hessling
  23. I believe these plates are a throwback to 70's NYS license plates. While the color of my license plate doesn't keep me up at night, I know this is another way for NY to make some money.
  24. My wife and I took a trip to Boston this week as a mini-honeymoon, on the way back through we stopped in Worcester, more specifically at the location of the Worcester Cold Storage fire that took place December 3, 1999, taking with it the lives of 6 Worcester Firefighters. In the demolished ruins of it, the city decided to put a brand new FH which was opened last year and a monument for the fallen. Here are some of the pictures from the stop. A very powerful monument, a very nice tribute.
  25. I do not but I believe Ed Harvey from Fire Service Photography came down for it - I wasn't there for it but I think this is the fire you are referring to? http://www.fireservi...10_2007/101707/ I was at school that day - but also a daytime run. Gotta love foam! But I gotta agree 9 outta 10 it's a loss from the start.
