If you ever want to know the results of the local "Popularity Contests" let me know, I will see what I can find out from the local cliques...IMEAN, departments.

On another note, good luck to all the experienced firefighters running for offices and congrats to all the officers that have or will be voted in, YOU all deserved it.

This is why elections should be a thing of the past. We need to start appointing qualified, competent people, not politically correct puppets who are afraid to rock the boat.

Who's to say appointments are not a popularity contest too? Or that the person appointed is any more qualified then the person not appointed? ;) Every department has Cliques and there is No system that can eliminate that.

Thats very true. I recall a department in Westchester where a career firefighter was an acting chief for close to a year; he was supposed to be appointed Chief; well when it came to the meeting to officially appoint him, the Board of Fire Commissioners having been influenced by others ended up appointing someone else to the position with no advance notice to the acting chief.

Can anyone tell me if any departments use any criteria such as training, certifications, time in service, time in department, or any other requirements to hold the fire officer ranks to which people have been elected?

Certain certifications or courses, as well as a specific time of service in the department are necessary to hold office here. As you can guess, the number of courses and time ramp up the more bugles the position has.

Hazmat operations is mandated by NYS (PESH) and federal (OSHA)law for all firefighters before they are allowed to respond on any calls. plus annual refresher.

Additional hazmat training is also required for anyone who maybe an IC (so all officers) and anyone who shows up prior to officers.

Well if that's what makes you feel OK with the elections then by all means keep spreading word.

For those VFD's that want to be recognized as professional organizations it's time to set rigid standards for promotions with testing and well documented process. There are some career jobs that could also benefit from the latter.
