  1. The fire commissioners at their meeting on Wednesday gave approval to start the process of upgrading some compartment space, a possible re-chassis as we have had issue with the current 6.0 liter motor mainly the turbo, changing the lighting from strobes to LED's. The unit currently has a 15KW Westerbeke diesel on board generator, a full compliment of hydraulic extrication tools, paratech stabilizers, a 4 head light tower and several others items as pictured below. I am looking for some input from the site to throw out some ideas and what hand tools guys have found that work other than the basic items (halligan, etc) how we can organize the compartments better and so on. Basically the rear passenger and driver side compartments can be gutted and made higher, there is about 15" of dead space above the roll up doors to make these much higher. I was thinking of changing the upper shelf in the center transverse compartment to be a roll out like the lower one. We are surely in need of new cribbing, what are you using? (photos if you can). See photos below of the current unit and please anything you can offer is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance. This may help, its a 2003 F-550 Rescue One!

  2. The Fire District is very pleased with how this rig and our BRAT turned out and the great working relationship we've developed with the Firematic BRAT shop we may send our light rescue down for some upgrading of the lights to LED's and some reworking of the compartments, it's a 2003 Ford F-550 Rescue One and pictured below, first photo credit to Ed Harvey and Fire Service Photography.

Rear hydraulic tool area, this is an older photo as we just upgraded the Amkus large cutter and spreader and also added the 1/4 quick connects on all the tools.

The fire district gave approval to start this process with the light rescue (69-51) Wednesday at their monthly meeting, I will make a new topic thread just for this subject instead having it here where it doesn't belong.

  3. A few shots sent from the shop of the front and rear consoles

Front console; you can see the GPS which is on a swivel and also is the back-up camera monitor, they added 2 -110 volt cigarette plugs and a USB port for cell phones, the seat belt monitor, the Litchfield County Connecticut and Dutchess County radios, the electronic Q2 control head, the small remote water and foam gauges as well as the pump engaged light and the brake for the bumper Q2 and a few cups holders.

    post-16297-0-17297600-1382015221.jpg

Rear console; You can see the base for the portable radio for the driver at the front corner which is fitted with a David and Clark headset (you can see it in the side map box), behind that is the power unit for the SCOTT 4 meter gas detector, the 4 survivor LED flashlights, the Motorola portable radio bank and the TIC camera mounted in on board charger, the console in the rear was left open so gear bags or items can be stowed under it and the top is also open for use of a laptop, coffee pot or any other electronic devices, there are power outlets installed on the underside of the table top for power, the outlets and electronics are powered off the shore line and as soon as the Engine is started and goes off shore line the 3000 watt invertor comes on through a Kussmall switching box, this also powers the mini frig too, also the USSC SCBA seats which are great items, with a fold up base so you can access the rear without the seat in the way as well as they have the dual release handle in the base between the legs of the firefighter (yellow handle) which releases both the SCBA and the seatbelt, obviously if your on a run that will not require SCBA then you just simply release the seatbelt as you normally would.

  4. I stopped in very early in the morning yesterday while things were being set-up but was able to capture a few photos of some of the antique apparatus from our area as well as the beautiful grounds and apparatus of the New Hackensack Fire District, this was an event for the public to come out and greet members that are trying to preserve Dutchess County’s firefighting tradition and history as well as enjoying the NHK open house.

  5. Looks awesome! Great job Mark!

Now if we can just get if here and in service, the rig couldn't get into the Suffolk County training center for the NFPA third party pump test until Wednesday afternoon so we shall take delivery Thursday morning now instead of Wednesday afternoon/evening, thanks Chris, spent way to many hours on this project but the Fire District is very pleased with how this rig and our BRAT turned out and the great working relationship we've developed with the Firematic BRAT shop we may send our light rescue down for some upgrading of the lights to LED's and some reworking of the compartments, it's a 2003 Ford F-550 Rescue One and pictured below, first photo credit to Ed Harvey and Fire Service Photography.

  6. I'm surprised that anyone would have any issues when it comes to safety and health, especially in the firehouse where people might spend a majority of their time. There might be more to this story then what we know.

That may be the case but to stoop to this level is very very sad indeed and in any case there always more to the story then anyone else but the players involved know, would be interesting to see those in house safety issue as you referred to are addressed, interesting that the Chief nor the Chairman of the Fire District failed to respond for comment and that the Captain is out on sick leave, as you said there is most likely a lot more to this story.

  7. Sent from the shop, out flowing some water today, I must say it is one nice looking Engine now that you can actually see the entire rig at once, they have a few things to finish up, if everything goes as planned, pump test is Tuesday and delivery will be Wednesday late morning, hopefully that is. The programming issue at International was a bad connection which was finally found. I am liking the fact that we moved the booster tank side level gauges to the B post instead of the C post area, it was going to be obstructed from the side rear, in the first photo you can see it at 3/4. There are also smaller slave foam and water gauges in the cab as the Engine can pump and roll and flow both foam and water in doing so, another advantage of the front mounted pump.

  8. GAW6, excellent post. I wanted to clarify something; I hope my comments did not offend anyone, they were simply made in haste with a lot of anger towords a few of our commissioners who are seemingly trying to turn our department into a business. They get mad when we dont turn a profit....and seem to not care that we have equipment needs. We have an ambulance that Im amazed even starts any more, and engine that failed pump test three times and they still throw money into it and hope it works, an old rescue truck held together with bondo and duct tape, a number of sets of gear about to go over the 10 year mark, a bunch of SCBA bottles that will need to be replaced soon...they just dont want to spend money where it is needed and complain about it. We cant provide the service we need to without this equipment but we cant explain that to some of these members because they have no emergency services experience, and its frustrating.

I am glad to see you work well with your board and that you understand these issues at least, members like you would be a welcome sight, its just some of the people I have to deal with that bothers me. Hope I did not offend anyone.

    Stay Safe

Funny Brian how district are different, we have a few members of our company on the board and they're the ones that frustrate the heck out of us because they believe they know it all, so so frustrating in both our cases.

  9. Our commissioners report to the Town Supervisor but have ultimate control of the department being we are a fire district. We have commissioners meetings on the second monday of the month and any tax paying person in our district can attend and ask questions and hear about department issues. They have a say in where their money goes, like with our recent proposal to have our station remodeled with an addition built on. That was passed, but not without a ton of flak from the taxpayers at that monthly commissioners meeting. As acting chief that month, I got to field all of the angry questions and offer our reasoning behind the need for the work; basically trying to tell them that fitting 5 trucks and a UTV with trailer in a 3 bay station had its negative impacts on OSHA laws, and by sharing all of the pictures of our station that were used in the annual OSHA refresher training in our county and how it was a huge black eye to our department and a safety issue.

The commissioners were on board with it, but the taxpayers were not, they complained and felt we could make due with what we had and were not concerned with our safety issue (until their house burns down because one of our members gets run over by their own truck trying to get out of our cramped station).

My issue with them, is that most of ours are not even firefighters or have they ever been firefighters. They are voted on just like other town officials in November, so anyone can be nominated and voted in if they have the votes from the town taxpayers. Right now, only one of the 7 member board of commissioners is still an active firefighter/driver, another 2 have been members a while ago but are not currently, the others have no firefighting experience. Thats my only issue.

Meetings are open to the public and you do not have to be a taxpayer to vote on items such as resolutions, all you have to be is a registered voter within that fire district to be heard. Our district adopted a public comment section to their monthly meetings just for that very reason "public comments". Sadly it is the same people that attend monthly, the fire commissioners and a few officers, even when we went through the purchasing of the new engine that failed on the first vote, no one from the public attended a meeting, once in a while we get a "hot" topic and a few individuals show up. I personally would like more people from the public to be on the board, instead of just members or past members, I've found that many times some of our own members that haven't seen a fire or been an active member for a great length of time really have no idea what is going on in today's emergency services either so are they really an "asset"? I think not. I would like to have five members that a are financially responsible and not "yes" members to the Chief. As always like you did above, do your homework ahead of time, be prepared, justify your expenditures and make a presentation to the members that have been voted in to over see how the taxes are spent, as well as the public, chances are if you are prepared, you should have no problem with getting approval for items, at least that's been my experience sitting at the other side of the table.

  10. thanks for the post, I just sent a request for attend for one of the dates, looks to a very good topic, In the spring I attended a train the trainer course and got certified to instruct on response to calls involving all types of persons with disabilities which is supposed to be rolled out soon through The Office of People with Developmental Disabilities to agencies in the specific demographics, my area it looks to be at least 8 counties of the Hudson/Harlem Valley.

  11. Thanks Angelo, I haven't seen it actually other than the photo but I'm sure it's the same, great idea with the cardboard so you can take it out if there is a change in use, I'll take a look when it arrives, thanks again
