Below I posted a link to a Journal-News story about two fires in Yonkers Friday evening. The first was reported about 8 PM in a fourth floor apartment in a six-story apartment building on Caryl Avenue in the southwest part of the city. This fire went to two alarms. Two firefighters also suffered some injuries.
Around 9 PM a second working fire was responded to, on the east side of Yonkers in a Bronx River Road apartment building and also involving a fourth floor apartment.
It sounds like YFD did their usual good job.
I'm sure they were stretched very thin by these two incidents and I'd really like to know how they juggled the assignments and etc. As a Yonkers resident I really take my hat off to the commanders at these incidents who can figure out how to accomplish all that they do.
    Great job guys!

For some reason I can't get the edit function to work. But the first fire was reported at 7 PM not 8 PM.

I apologize if this has already been posted. Well, I actually I don't. Twice is not bad.
I live in Yonkers and love it. I really do. And one of the best things about Yonkers is our thoroughly professional fire department. Someone wrote here recently that whenever they think about YFD they feel proud to be a Yonkers resident. That was a pretty cool statement and it made me realize....I feel exactly the same way.
Anyway, click on the link below and then -- please!!! -- vote for 306!

Yes it's very sad and for someone like me, a civilian, downright scary. A city of 60,000 people is pretty darn big to be shutting down it's police and fire departments and start contracting them out.
What do we contract out next? The US Air Force?

That is not what I am saying at all... That's a complete strawman argument and you know it.
Currently we have fire departments building fire engines around EMS transporting jobs. What happens when the first due engine company (and mind you its the only fire company for miles) is tied up transporting a taxi ride, and a structure fire comes in? Volusia County, FL and many others have taken the disgusting option of doing this. Removing FIREFIGHTERS from their primary role of rescuing life, and protecting property, to becoming a cash money machine for the government by transporting patients. They already overtook the contracted county ambulance company, and turned them into a department of the county, why deplete your resources even more. Hell, lets not stop there, lets add a pump panel to a garbage truck, and cross train the sanitation workers to do Fire since they're always out on the road. Pick one job and stick with it. Theres a reason many places try to cross train their cops as firemen, and visa versa, and when it fails, they revert back to the old system. Someone's life or property is going to be lost because the firemen were busy dealing with a passed out drunk somewhere, or the cops were on a V&T stop with 1 in custody and unable to respond to a call that would typically be handled by a fire department.

If you want to send firefighters on life or death medical calls based off an EMD dispatch, that's your departments choice and I hope a good risk / benefit analysis was done off it. But to either break up a company like many places do, or place an entire company on every single medical call, unavailable to respond to their primary function, in my eyes, is ludicrous.

As a resident of Yonkers I would also like to wish Chief Fitzpatrick a very happy retirement and thank him for his long service to this city. Whoever his successor is he will inherit a very well-run and professional department.
I think one thing all Yonkers residents can agree on -- maybe the only thing! -- we have one heckuva good fire department!

I think yesterday there was a working fire in New Rochelle when Ladder 12 was OOS. If I read the incident report right, there was only one company left in service for ALL of New Rochelle. Eng. 25 at Stratton Road. I realize they undoubtedly called in MA but as a non-professional, to me that does seem risky.
In White Plains in summer 2010 a serious fire broke out in the basement of a restaurant downtown. A number of WPFD companies were already assigned to a serious incident at a Con Ed power station.
I believe the initial response was an engine and a truck. Probably a total of six or seven men. One of the firefighters first on the scene were quoted as saying they couldn't do much of anything until reinforcements arrived. The fire got out of control and ultimately destroyed the building and required a big response.
As a taxpayer I want economy but I want to be safe too.
