  1. PFDRes47cue liked a post in a topic by firedude in Incident Alerts-What Do YOU Want To See?
    Well here is my opinion...
    What I like to see:
Structure Fires, Car Fires, Major MVAs, MVAs w/injurys, MVAs w/extrication, MVAs w/rolloversMCIs, Aircraft emergencies, Hazmat incidents, rescues, marine fires and rescues, large Brush Fires
What I don't like to see:
False alarms, minor MVAs, medical calls, lockouts, kitchen fires, chimney fires w/out extention to structure, small brush fires, grill fires, animal rescues, ems assists,
Overall, I think thses are good rules... Acceptable Types Of Incidents For IA's-Guidelines
I also do not like to see 2 IAs for 1 incident. If there are 2, then the they should be merged onto the post with more info. [FYI, there is two for the Purchase MVA-Mods please fix]. I also would like see that everything is filled out on the template given. I would like to see the actual unit designations that was at the scene rather then just the department names. The First Due department should be listed first. Then the other departments should be mentioned in the order they are requested or dispatched. If there is a FASTeam, it should be noted in the post. If a frequnecy is not know, then the reporter/writer should look it up online. For most major scenes (ie. fires) a time of dispatch and a the time when all units are clear should be stated (if known). If the incident took place on a highway, try to state the milemarker or closest exit with direction (ie. northboud vs Southbound). Posts should have proper titles with Location, Type of incident and the date. If a notable media source has a article about the incident, I would like to see a link to the article. If there is a seperate discusion about the incident, a link should be posted. There should be no photos allowed in the IA. I think it is a good que to post a call if the county bat. cordinator is on scene. There should be no 10- codes used when writing out IAs.
    Just my 2 cents.

My name is Nicholas. I am 18 years old, and live in Portage, MI. I am currently nearing the end of my EMT-B course, and hope to get a job with one of the EMS services in the area.
I hope to learn as much as possible here.

I'll bite, and tell you about the UK.
The UK doesn't have fire departments; they have fire brigades, and a brigade doesn't cover an area smaller than a county. Some have amalgamated and cover more than one county. So, no local fire departments in the American sense. This has been the case for a very long time - certainly from the second world war, when all existing firefighting resources were, in effect, nationalized, and there was a single National Fire Service for the duration of the war. This big difference, that during the war the North American continent never came under direct attack, whilst the UK was bombed heavily, is mostly responsible for the organizational differences.
Are there volunteers? Yes, there are a very few areas - mostly very remote rural areas with exceedingly low call volumes - in the brigades where 'first aid' fire cover is provided by pure volunteers. Usually they don't have apparatus or SCBA, perhaps just a trailer with basic equipment, maybe some buckets, a portable pump & hose etc.
For the vast, vast majority of the country, the firefighters are not volunteers; they are 'wholetime' or 'retained'.
'Wholetime' means what we would call 'career' - exactly the same as here.
'Retained' firefighters operate a bit like our volunteers - they have day jobs and carry pagers. When the tones drop, they respond to the fire station and get the apparatus out. But they're paid. They're paid an annual bounty or 'retainer' - hence 'retained' - and they're paid at union hourly rates for time spent training and responding to calls. And they have specific duty hours when they're contractually obliged to respond to all calls; they 'clock in' and 'clock out' of their duty hours by cellphone or computer.
They're more like part-time career firefighters, and they can and do join the union. Training is similar for both. So it's more than just 'paid per call'.
Obviously big cities are staffed entirely by 'wholetime' firefighters, and 'retained' firefighters are in smaller towns and rural areas. As far as I know, there are no mixed crews of retained & wholetime firefighters on the same apparatus - so no combo departments as we would think of them. What you do sometimes get is a fire station with a wholetime dayshift and a retained nightshift, for instance.
Oh, and UK firefighters do not do EMS; the ambulance/paramedic service is entirely separate, run by the NHS.
    Hope that helps.
    Mike

I was driving through Trophy Club, Texas yesterday when I happened to see that the Circus had set up shop in the parking lot of the Country Club. Curious to know what it was, I pulled in and parked. It happened to be Trophy Club's fire station.

They have a Engine, Brush Truck, Medic, and Quint parked inside.

There's a mobile home set up next to the tent for their living quarters.

The reason for this is because they tore down the old station to build this new station on the same lot as the old one. This new station is set to open this Summer.

And their relation to each other.
They are located on Castle Hill Avenue, Bronx.
This firehouse was mentioned previously in this FDNY E45/L58 Firehouse thread.
Here are a couple more pics with some more detail.

    Greetings,
My parents named me William, my Marines named me "Doc" and I've been involved in Emergency Services my entire adult life. My summer job in HS was fighting wildland fires for NYSDEC. I entered the Service after a couple years of college. Before I enlisted, I was a member of a VFD and a VAC. After Hospital Corps School I served exclusively with The Corps for 11 years. Got to some of the worlds "garden spots". After Desert Storm, I came home and took every civil service test I could get my hands on. It came down to NYSP and Newburgh Fire Dept. NFD called first so in 1994 I began my career there. In 1999 I was injured at a scene and ended u going to the Fire Prevention Bureau. Been there since 2000. Promoted to LT in 03. I am a Level II Fire Investigator with national certification pending. I am a Code Enforcement Officer as well. I am ow the officer in charge of the Bureau.
