  1. Leesburg, which is right near Asburn, has a nice Seagrave tiller. They also have a 1929 Seagrave pumper. I have not affiliation with them but I work for a NOVA department. Another place to visit would be the Frienship firehouse museum in Alexandria. George Washington was an early member here. Great historic firehouse. http://alexandriava.gov/FriendshipFirehouse
  2. It was actually located between Richmond and Charlottesville Va not NC. I live in Northern Va and definitely felt it and it was pretty significant here.
  3. Matt, I am sorry for your health issue and wish you the best. As far as the Cancer "Presumption", that is a very tangled web. I am a career firefighter in a state with a Cancer Presumption Act and have seen first hand what a hassle it is to have cancer considered work related even in a presumption state. Despite the title that this act has it is certainly not "presumed" to be job related, it is still up the individual and the lawyer(s) to prove it was directly related to the job. All the State lawyers need to do is find out you smoked or used tobacco at some point in your life (we are prohibited from tobacco products in this state once we are hired) and all bets are off. The other tricky part is that the Cancer Presumption Act really doesn't take "effect" until you are on the job for 12 years. Just food for thought, I am not sure if this is the same case in other Presumption States.
  4. I agree, I am usually pretty tolerant but that was just painful to read. I am nowhere near perfect when it comes to sentence structure or spelling but at least make an attempt, please!
  5. Very touching story, I to looked up to my father and grandfather who had both done this before me and I only hope to be half the firefighter that they and your dad were. Hopefully I can be someones role model before I retire (which is quickly approaching), and you are right time sure does fly. Thanks for the story and I will pass this around the station if you don't mind.
  6. We work a 24/48 with kelly's. Every 8th shift is a shift off and every 64th shift we get 2 shifts off.
  7. Just ordered one through paypal, good luck and keep up the fight.
  8. Count me in if you get paypal up since I am now in Virginia it's not really feasible for me to stop by.
  9. That's a great idea.
  10. Good points. Was it trauma? Hazmat exposure? Burns? Was the Patient airlifted? If so were they deconned?
  11. A thatch roof? That's a first for me, and I have been around the fire service for a while. I have fought fires at homes with everyting from tin, slate, terracotta and everything in between but never a thatch. It just goes to show you that the people that build homes or plan homes never think about what happens when a home is confronted with fire. Be safe out there because you never know what you may confront. I work in a very wealthy area (one of the wealthest counties in the country) so now it has me thinking because we pretty regularly run "homes" of this size. How wide was the moat? I have looked up this "home" on google earth but the image is rather old and it still seems to be under construction. Best guess estimate of square footage?
  12. That's what I was thinking also, I have tried prying and cutting a metal roof before and it doesn't always work as planned it is also best done from a tower bucket wich doesn't really seem feasible or wise here. Like JHK said depending upon the situation I would go with horizontal ventilation and perhaps a properly deployed ppv. This is how not to use ppv http://www.vententersearch.com/?p=419 That above video is a must see, and that is also a great site for those of you that have never been there and it is updated every few days.
