I firmly believe in using any language neccesary to get the job done. I think mentally when a "commoner" hears an LEO say what's on his/her mind, they may think to him/herself, this COP means business. I'll take a couple day rip if it keeps me and my collegue's alive!

By my understanding, you mean a ride-along correct? Even so, if a buff (or another person from a different agency) is on a ride along, then they should be following the same rules as the first responders. Obviously if the person has permission to be there, then they are not affected by the rule. Honestly, if you are certified to help and allowed to operate on the scene, that is your first priority before taking any pictures. Obviously anyone that is taking pictures of an incident should be conscious of staying out of the way of the operations and be mindful of what they are capturing on film, which buffs are and take great pride in doing making sure that the photos are tasteful and not offensive.
I'm sure there will be some leeway as this is geared towards more of the abuses by a few of the first responders in this state and also some of the news media getting in the way.
    ADDED
Also this law is referring as worded in the last few lines to the patient being treated and without their or a family member's consent to post the picture of them specifically on a public outlet. It's not written concerning anything about taking scene photos.

I think there's a big difference in the requirements placed on a volunteer firefighter versus a career firefighter in a department like FDNY. It is entirely possible that a person could be disability retired from FDNY and still able to perform as an interior firefighter in a small community like mine. There are several injuries or work related illnesses that might cause a doctor to say that a person cannot meet the demands of the FDNY job but could still do it in a department that does 150 calls per year, only a couple of which are actually fire-related. An FDNY firefighter might be expected to routinely climb 20 flights of stairs in full gear and be able to perform his full functions whereas my department may only expect a firefighter to be able to climb 3 flights of stairs and do the job. A small department may only require you to be able to perform firefighting functions for an hour at a clip while FDNY might require you to be on your feet for 12 hours running calls.
Many people have complained both on here and even on the state level about "different qualifications" and that firefighter is a single job description. Different communities have different needs and thus different requirements for their firefighters. I don't claim for a second that I could go down to FDNY and do the job but I'm pretty damn sure I can do it in my community. Saying that it's only "one job" is like requiring any car mechanic to have the ability of a NASCAR pit crew member.

I believe the vehicle that struck the cruiser was a Ford Mustang newer model. The perp didn't make it.

Gators are nice..but for the same reasons why I'm putting together a bike program...kinda of hard to maneuver when 10,000 people are packed into an area..or on a mountain bike trail barely a foot wide.
Light package? Are you kidding me...
Numbering and lettering...love how that's what some pick up on. I don't care if they put the alphabet on it...or any number...and "liability"? Very little liability as the agency is covered no different then anything else. And I wouldn't know why anyone other then an EMT or Paramedic would be on a medical bike.

This is true, but lets be clear. The issue is not REALLY that this test doesn't do a good job of determining who'd be a better fireman. That's just a clever legal foothold to dig into, somewhere to place the blame.
You know what they should do? Make the test HARD. Not the nonsense open-book exam that it is, legitimately hard. Make this an exam that you actually have to study for. Do whatever you have to, give out the study materials, but at least make the test an event that you have to put some effort into...
...but that will never happen, because it wouldn't get the "desired" results that certain racist organizations are looking for.
  13. Alpinerunner liked a post in a topic by abaduck in European Firefighting
I'll bite, and tell you about the UK.
The UK doesn't have fire departments; they have fire brigades, and a brigade doesn't cover an area smaller than a county. Some have amalgamated and cover more than one county. So, no local fire departments in the American sense. This has been the case for a very long time - certainly from the second world war, when all existing firefighting resources were, in effect, nationalized, and there was a single National Fire Service for the duration of the war. This big difference, that during the war the North American continent never came under direct attack, whilst the UK was bombed heavily, is mostly responsible for the organizational differences.
Are there volunteers? Yes, there are a very few areas - mostly very remote rural areas with exceedingly low call volumes - in the brigades where 'first aid' fire cover is provided by pure volunteers. Usually they don't have apparatus or SCBA, perhaps just a trailer with basic equipment, maybe some buckets, a portable pump & hose etc.
For the vast, vast majority of the country, the firefighters are not volunteers; they are 'wholetime' or 'retained'.
'Wholetime' means what we would call 'career' - exactly the same as here.
'Retained' firefighters operate a bit like our volunteers - they have day jobs and carry pagers. When the tones drop, they respond to the fire station and get the apparatus out. But they're paid. They're paid an annual bounty or 'retainer' - hence 'retained' - and they're paid at union hourly rates for time spent training and responding to calls. And they have specific duty hours when they're contractually obliged to respond to all calls; they 'clock in' and 'clock out' of their duty hours by cellphone or computer.
They're more like part-time career firefighters, and they can and do join the union. Training is similar for both. So it's more than just 'paid per call'.
Obviously big cities are staffed entirely by 'wholetime' firefighters, and 'retained' firefighters are in smaller towns and rural areas. As far as I know, there are no mixed crews of retained & wholetime firefighters on the same apparatus - so no combo departments as we would think of them. What you do sometimes get is a fire station with a wholetime dayshift and a retained nightshift, for instance.
Oh, and UK firefighters do not do EMS; the ambulance/paramedic service is entirely separate, run by the NHS.
    Hope that helps.

If they want to maintain the points...yes. At the same time I suggest they look at the policy on when it is used. ISO does not require it for all calls (or any for that matter) as long as its periodically tested and can be used as a backup if the primary system fails.
  15. Alpinerunner liked a post in a topic by chris498 in Monsey Fire shuts down the siren.......
I think turning the horn/siren off was a mistake as well. In a time when more and more people moving into the suburbs have no interest in the fire department until they are needed it is a good friendly reminder that the fire department exists! The people who complain are usually saying what an inconvenience it is for them. Ironically, it's these same people who can't be inconvenienced to drop what they are doing, golf, yard work - sorry - paying someone to do yard work, leave work, leave their kids, miss dinner, church, or whatever it is they deem so important to not go help a neighbor or stranger in need. I agree with rfdu39. These horns and sirens continue to serve a vital purpose in alerting volunteers that there is an emergency. They have sounded in town for years. Nobody - that I have ever heard of - died because they heard the fire whistle go off. People need to learn to get used to them and stop worrying about their perfect little existances being bothered.

His body is going to be "disposed of", hopefully by scavenging animals or better yet put it in a pig sty and let them have at it.. Maybe he can't eat pork but I'm sure the pigs would enjoy the scrawny bearded feast. In the end there will be no grave, no tomb, no martyrs shrine...no physical trace that this scumbag ever existed and that too is justice.
The end to Osama bin A-hole is not the end, but mearly a step on the road to destroying those who seek to harm us. God bless the U.S. military and a hearty Thank you for a job well done. Onward boys to victory!!!! I hope every American wakes up and supports the efforts to make our world and nation safe. We must remain vigilant. We are at war and every American is a part of it whether they like it or not. We didn't start it but by God as history has shown we WILL finish it. Bin Laden got his, now let us not rest until the rest get theirs.

Weather Conditions: light mist / fog
    Description Of Incident:
Single Car into the median, down the embankment. 911 Caller was the driver, no other calls. Car was not visible from the road.
    22:47 - Dispatched to incident
    22:48 - 2532, 2533 Responding
    22:50 - Engine 270, Rescue 16, Engine 273 responding
    22:51 - 2531 responding

23:50 - Victim extricated (55 min extrication time), handed over to EMS, transported ALS to WMC
    - Car was a new Subaru legacy with extremely strong frame work (boron and ultra high strength steel). Car wrecked at an extremely high rate of speed, causing the engine/dash to roll onto the driver, pinning the victim's right leg completely under the dash. During the incident, Multiple hydraulic cutting/spreading tools, 3 hydraulic rams, 1 sawsall and 1 steering wheel cutter were put to work. Precautionary hand line was also stretched. Units preformed a drivers side removal of the front door, and a full roof removal. The dash was then rolled as much as possible without further injuring the patient, and it was determined the victim's leg was pinned under the clutch and brake. The steering wheel cutter was used to cut the brake pedal out, and remove the victim. The victim was alert and conscious the duration of the incident, and suffered minor injuries. Without a doubt, this car saved this victim's life.
