  1. im sorry but i think some of you are missing the picture here. A Parade is for the community. A celebration of whatever it may be. Celebrating America or troops coming home or something within the community. Its very much American as apple pie. When i hear the "should have used the time for training or done this or done that or the rig should be covering." As long as he dept has resources to cover, go to the parade. Let the people enjoy a weekend and see firetrucks, police cars and Ambulances and bands. I just don't get it. Next parades will be banned because they are too patriotic according to the trend the country is on. Some of you need to get a grip and enjoy life.

    Amen Brother.

  2. The NYPD test is a great way to practice, because you can take it on your schedule (its walk-in) and you can take it again every 3 months or so. I want to say it was only like $35-$40 too. I'd definitely look at taking that.

I'd agree with this. Hopefully people have some more useful information regarding what places are hiring and whether or not it is easy or hard place to get on rather than talking about tiers.

    Good luck.

  3. Well latest models put landfall of a direct hit into Jersey somewhere, though that's obviously subject to change between now and the next few days. Plus, as someone mentioned, this is a geographically BIG storm, so to say we're not going to get hit in Westchester/CT might be premature.

I'm not a run out, stock up type of person but this is a good time to talk with your family and go over your personal emergency plans. You'll be a much more effective responder if your mind is at ease about your family situation.

    Agreed. Stay safe everyone.

For those looking for a trusted weather facebook page, check out the Forensic Weather Consultants page. Pretty good. The guy will be on good morning america this morning.

  4. Just curious: what was his level of training? Did he have FIerfightet 2 or Fire Officer? Had he taken EVOC? Not for nothing but if his training was up to standards perhaps he would have made better choices. Instead he created an unnecessary tragedy.

Ask me he got off easy!

I dont think the fire related training he has would have anything to do with what choices he made. If you ask me, the skill or better judgment of driving a personal vehicle doesnt come with fire department related training.

  5. Forget the idea that Detriot is looking for people to pay to be firefighters... we should all be there (although we cannot be) to help this city; fire, police, financially, etc. (In an unrealistic solution... possibly) FEMA should send over several companies from surrounding cities, towns, states, etc to cover for the time, even Police. Or, instead of that $1 million fireboat that Union Fire Company got and had to return, the government should buy a couple rigs and send qualified FF's over to assist week to week. I understand... its your city and your brotherhood and you want your own guys back and maybe the government should help you financially, but the city is far beyond falling apart; take any help you can get.

  6. I care.

All too often, I have operated at fires of all types where the IC has been one who preaches and practices, minimum amount of water to put the fire out..and by put the fire out, i mean, once the flame is gone, out...

I myself am somewhat more aggressive...I feel that less damage is done by using enough water to confirm the fire has no threat of reignition, than the damage done by a rekindle. Don't pussyfoot around it....dump the tank and be confident!

I think what Barry wrote should be tattooo'ed to IC's hands as a constant reminder.

Rekindles exist...but I will do everything in MY power to make sure they don't...on MY watch.

Thats not why i said it... I said who cares cause someone said "re-kindle" shouldnt be used. Its a word..... use it if you want.

  7. The term "Re-Kindle" should never be used.

How can a fire that is extingushed, "Re-Kindle"? It can not.

When a fire occurs in the same structure hours (or days) later, one of three things has occured:

    1) The arrsonest returned to complete the job

    2) The fire dept. did a poor job of overhaul and missed something (most common with a smells & bells or a small "room & content" incident)

    3) The fire dept. made a determination that after a major fire (often with collapse) that there were no exposure issues and no way to do overhaul (without heavy equipment) and often it was in the best interest of the safety of the members to regroup and wait.

Based on the size of this fire...sounds like #3. so it was not a "Re-Kindle".

    Who cares...

  8. In our case this would leave you with working for a given number of years beyond school. Again this is an avenue we're studying to better serve our hiring processes in the future.

We're not anti-education by any stretch, but have found over and over, especially as of late, that people with degrees and no work experience seem to not live up to our expectations, while those with a little work history or military time seem to make better employees. There's nothing like a stack of bills and no one to turn to, to make people appreciate having a job and showing some work ethic.

But my question is... where do you start? I understand you can work after you graduate, but where that will give you experience? Working at Subway isnt considered Experience for the fields, I believe, we are talking about right? For the older experienced career level individuals in this forum, what type of entry level positions or fields would you recommend to those straight out of college AND out of Military that will provide them with the Experience now needed during the hiring process?

  9. Given some of our recent hires, we're looking into a revamped hiring system that requires either military service or a number of years in the workforce. There's something to be said for being a well rounded individual who's worked to support themselves, not just to make a car payment while living with mom and dad. We've also noted that those with military experience tend to fit the FD organizational structure better and are less apt to work hard to get out of hard work, regardless of what the duty.

Then where is one to start if they do not make the choice of joining the military? For the past 5 years I have seen this exact topic happen time and time again; and its not just FD or PD fields. As I do agree with "experience" counting on a hiring process, I also agree with giving someone (aka college grads) the opportunity to gain the experience who does not already have it. I agree a lot on what alsfirefighter said above and I believe some agencies should look into how they are hiring.

  10. Forgive me if I repeat what was mentioned in earlier Posts.

I work in the Security field in the City of Stamford, CT. For those topics related to tactical teams passing patients so that the team can proceed to eliminate the threat, I agree and believe that is the case for Stamford. Stamford's procedures (correct me if Im wrong) has a set group of possibly 5 or 6 tactical patrol vehicles that will all respond to the location and storm the building together during the event of an Active Shooter to quickly eliminate the threat.

Creating safe zones (clearing areas) for EMS personnel can only be done with confirmation of the suspect(s) exact location and to a point where Law Enforcement have trapped the suspect(s) in one zone.

That "one zone" can also be described as "barricaded", such as a Hostage situation. SWAT or SRT's now come in handy. As mentioned in the Columbine shooting timeline, SWAT are ALMOST useless when it comes to an Active Shooter where most of the damage has already been done and suspects eliminate themselves prior to SWAT arrival.

Getting back to the main point of this thread (i think), it would be nice to see an advanced EMS individual on a tactical team but that advanced EMS individual might have to be part of law enforcement patrol, not EMS, so that this individual can be readily available if such incidents arise, no? My thoughts for EMS preparation on a incident such as an active shooter are that EMS should focus more on what mutual aid will be available and what type of EMS mutual aid. Also, the tools they have available on their rigs and mutual aid rigs that can create a large staging area; not necessarily worrying about entering a hot zone building to retrieve patients. When it is "all clear" retrieving patients will be no different than entering a building to retrieve a patient who is having a heart attack. And I agree 100% that there should be more EMS commanders available in Westchester county; there was a very good point stated that the duration of EMS incidents are a lot shorter than FD incidents and someone to soley command EMS in a timely manner is essential.

  11. Cool. A quick question about HQ. About twelve years ago, I saw the old ALF Ladder 10(I think it was an ex. Sound Beach Ladder) in the garage bay on the far left(under the Amogerone sign). I believe it ran as the town's spare ladder for a while. However, seeing as how it was at HQ, were Amogerone or Volunteer Hose and Chem. using it as their rig? Also, I'm not sure, but I think Engine 31 from Byram is at HQ now and is the town's spare. Are either volunteer companies, particulary Volunteer Hose and Chem. using that rig to ride out on call with?

Yes that Ladder was a Sound Beach Ladder. It use to be a CONVERTIBLE!! Heard some stories from the old timers about riding around in that with no top. When Greenwich purchased the twin mid-mounts, Ladder 10 was used as a spare, thing was great. It was stationed at Cos Cob whenever it was not being used as a spare and the Cos Cob Vol. Fire Company were trained on it and used it for calls, mostly storm standby's. I do not believe Hose and Chem used it, and Amogerone did not. Peddle to the floor to get that thing out the door. It was going to be sold to Banksville when their ladder was no longer operable but it was not and was sold or donated somewhere else.

The rigs in firenews.org that you mentioned are paid rigs as far as I know. It has always been a combo department though. Maybe a older member can touch on this and Greenwich's past. Maybe this should be moved to a new thread??

  12. Attached is the new Tanker 2 that (215, now 214) mentioned in the last post. It will go hand in hand with Squad 2 (also pictured) and added to the Tanker Task force. Some of you who listen in on the Greenwich FD radio feed may have heard it be dispatched for a couple alarms/fires in the past week but it is still out of service at Greenwich Fleet being put together; it was in the CAD "in service" by accident. It should be placed into service by the end of this week.

As far as I know, there is no Rescue 3 that the Vollies have, only the utility.

Rescue 5 is combination. Most of the time ran by the Vollies.

Some DC's respond to the airport emergencies on their own without being dispatched but Greenwich is like the 8th alarm (exaggerating) to the Airport. I believe Round Hill's Tanker 6 is on level 3 alert for Airport but id have to double check.

And to get back on topic... Congrats to the 2 new paid FF of Gwich! Hopefully they aren't giving you a hard time Jeff haha. :D
