Villages Public Safety Department calls have jumped by 20 percent
February 24, 2014 By Meta Minton 15 Comments

Call volume for the Villages Public Safety Department jumped by more than 20 percent in the past year.

The public safety department responded to 14,981 calls between Oct. 1, 2012 through Sept. 30, 2013, according to an annual report.

The bulk of the call volume was for medical-related events and accounted for 62.22 percent of the responses.

There were 2,580 more calls to the Villages Public Safety Department than the previous year.

There were 161 “haz-mat” calls for gasoline leaks, natural gas leaks and chemical spills.

Six calls were to remove people from stalled or inoperable elevators.

The department tested 6,739 fire hydrants and taught cardiopulmonary resuscitation classes to 2,191 people.

The department had a budget of $10.432 million dollars of which $6.749 million went toward salaries and benefits for employees.

The Villages Public Safety Department now has seven stations with a full-time staff of 92.

  4. I agree it's not an apples to apples comparison. I'm not 100% sure what he's talking abut but The Villages has a large stand alone department that is not run by Rural Metro and is an IAFF local, I believe the same is true for the County Fire Rescue.

YES, The Villages, Florida Public Safety Department Is IAFF Local 3990 And The Department's Members Are ALL Paid Fair Salaries And Benefits. In Addition, The Villages Runs & Finances The Villages Charter Schools ( Pre-K Thru High School ) For ALL That Work In The Villages, It Is One Of The Highest-Rated Districts In Florida, 96% Of It's Graduates Go On To Higher Education And MANY Return To Work In Or Around The Villages. Our Water Department, Sewer Department And Garbage Collection Are Run By A Private Contractor And Our Current Form Of Government Does NOT Need Mayor, City Manager And Council People Making Outrageous Salaries With Benefits. We Have Eleven (11) Community Development Districts With Elected Officials That Serve For FREE Because They Are Proud Of Our Community And It's Management. The Days Of 100k Firefighter Salaries And Too Many 150k Chiefs Is On It's Way Out In Westchester, The Taxpayers Can NO LONGER Handle This Tax Burden Folks !!!!!!!!!!

  5. I Worked As A Dispatcher For 32 Years, 24 With The New Rochelle Fire Dept. And 8 With Westchester County Fire Control And NEVER Realized The Waste Of Taxpayer Money Until I Moved To The Villages In Sumter County, Florida. This Affluent County 45 Miles North Of DisneyWorld Is Covered By Sumter County Fire-Rescue And ALL EMS And Dispatch Operations ( Police & Fire ) Are Operated By Rural-Metro. Our Localities Are Offered The Option Of Having Their Own Fire Protection Services And Certain Standards Have To Be Met. The Villages Is The Fastest Growing Metro Area In The U.S. And Will Hit 140,000 Population In 5-6 Years At It's Current Growth Rate. The Villages Developers ( The Morse Family ) Have A Fire Protection Assessment Added To Our Taxes, And It Is Added To Our Yearly Tax Bills. We Currently Run An ALL Sutphen Fleet Of 4 Engines, 1 Squad, 2 Mid-Mount Aerials And A 95' Aerial Tower. ALL Stations Are Strategically Placed For Response Throughout The Villages And 90% Of The Calls Are EMS. Each Station Has A Ford F-Series Quick Response Vehicle That Is Used By 2 Members Of Each Crew For EMS Responses, Leaving The Remaining Crew In Quarters For Fire Responses. After Comparing The Cost Of Fire Protection In My NEW County Of Sumter And OLD County Of Westchester I Would Advise The IAFF Unions In Westchester To Encourage Implementation Of The Westchester 2000 Plan Or Rural-Metro Will Be Making Inroads In Your Territory And Will Be Much MORE Successful Than The Rye Brook Fiasco A Number Of Years Back. They Are Already Formulating Proposals To Man Westchester County Dispatch Operations, So Beware My Friends, The Taxpayers In ALL Westchester Cities, Towns And Districts Are Looking For Dollar Saving Budgets That DO NOT BREAK The Bank !!!!!!

  6. Rob, I Have 3 Gamewell Boxes In This Condition That I Am Selling In Addition To A Gamewell Tape Register Alarm System If You Know Anyone Looking For Same. Boxes Are $300.00 Each, Alarm Sysytem Is $450.00

  7. We have 58 Fire depts. in Westchester and many have trouble getting enough trained firefighters on scene. Many have more equipment then they can ever manage to get out the door and this situation puts the public & firefighters in danger.

I suspect nothing will change until a multi fatality fire AND a lawsuit against the fire dist /municipality and/or the chief(s).

Its really sad that depts are not willing to solve this problem.

Well Stated Barry, Westchester Departments Spend MORE Time Specing Million Dollar Rigs And Multi-Million Dollar Firehouses And MOST Departments Can't Muster Up Enough Equipment To Fight A Small House Fire, It's VERY, VERY Sad !!!!!!

  8. Thanks Chuck And Noam, I Suggest You Both Purchase Some Turn-Out Gear So You Can Respond To The First Hi-Rise Apartment Fire In Place Of Ladder 12, You ARE Playing Russian Roulette With People's Lives And Have Devastated A Once Proud And Well-Equipped Fire Department. A One Million Dollar Rescue Truck Gathers Dust In Station 1 After You Promised To Man It With 1 Officer And 1 Firefighter. Engine 23 Is Falling Apart And NEEDS To Be Replaced. In Addition Ladder 12 Covers The West End Of New Rochelle Which Is Densely Populated And Has MANY, MANY Buildings 75-100 Years Old With Close Proximity. I Would Advise The Taxpayers Of The Once ' QUEEN CITY OF THE SOUND ' To Protest These Fire Department Cuts Which Will Surely ENDANGER Many Lives !!!!!!!!!!

  9. You missed my point. When we have used "plain ennglish" we still do not get to correct response.

We never used the "Westchester 10 code. We always had our own and 60 control agreed to use ours when we switched to them 20 years ago.

True, but if the initial size up describes a working fire, but not the words "working fire" then you get nothing. We have found it much easier to get our personnel to routinly say "10-75"

Captain, Sounds Like New Rochelle Is NOT Happy With 60-Control's Dispatchers, Perhaps A Refresher Course In FDNR SOP Is Overdue :-(

  10. Comments like these, "contract with New Rochelle Fire Department" push the consolidation discussion away. I don't think you meant this in a malicious way toward the career firefighters in the Pelhams, but let me ask you; under your scenario of "contracting" with New Rochelle Fire Department, what then would be done with the career firefighters who have been and continue to be dedicated to the task of protecting the citizens of the Pelhams?

Then you talk about "Consolidation is the wave of the future"... etc, now that in my opinion is where you should have started, not by throwing out a comment like you did which would be construed (taken on it's own) as hostile to Pelham career firefighters.

Career personnel in departments like the Pelhams are not at fault because the system is all screwed up. They've only done what they were hired to do, in many cases decades ago, and done so with all the honor and dignity that is the hallmark of ALL professional firefighters...no matter who they work for.

Note To efdcapt115 : The Pelham And Pelham Manor Career Staff Would Become Part Of FDNR Local 273 And The Pelham Manor Ladder Would Be A Quint So It Will Have The Ability To Put Water On A Fire Pending The Arrival Of Additional Engine Companies. There Is NO Hostility Towards Anyone Involved My Friend, Just A Suggestion That Westchester Has TOO Many Small Fire Departments That Are Hurting Financially And Could Do MUCH Better Consolidating With Larger Departments.

  11. Pelham And Pelham Manor Should Contract With New Rochelle Fire Department, For The Money They Are Spending New Rochelle Could Place A Fully Staffed Ladder ( 4+1 ) In Pelham Manor And A Fully Staffed Engine ( 3+1 )In Pelham, Eliminating Two Paid Chief's Positions And Providing 2 Engines And 1 Ladder On ALL Pelham Manor And Pelham Alarms In Addition To Responding On EMS Calls. A Box Alarm In Pelham Manor Would Get NRFD Engine 24, Pelham Engine, Pelham Manor Ladder And Car 2302. A Box Alarm In Pelham Would Get NRFD Engine 22, Pelham Engine, Pelham Manor Ladder And Car 2302. Consolidation Is The Wave Of The Future, The Pelhams Would Be Wise To Adapt A Consolidation Plan In The Near Future.

  14. FYI, One Mack C-Series Pumper Was Stored Under The Stairs At Station 2 For A Couple Of Years, Before It Was Sold. Also, Up Until The 1960's Station 2 Was The ' Junk ' Station, ALWAYS Getting The Oldest In Service Rigs As First Line Apparatus. That 1938 ALF Tractor Drawn Aerial Shown In Another BNechis Post Was In Service At Station 2 In The Late 50's And Possibly Early 60's Until It Was Replaced By The 1961 Maxim O/C Tractor-Drawn Aerial. The Maxim Aerial And Mack C-Series Pumper Were The First NEW Rigs For This Station In Many, Many Years !!!!!!

  15. Barry, Many Of These OLDER Photos Are From My Photo Collection Which Was Amassed Over A 54 Year Period Starting In 1957. A Few Were From My Uncle James Maguire, A Member Of FDNR Exempts And Retired NRPD Lieutenant Dominick Bruzzese. If Credit Is Due The Photographer(s) Of Any Of These Photos PLEASE Let Us Know ASAP :-)I'm Still Searching For Photos Of Engine 21 And 24 1957 GMC/ALF Engines And The 1950's Oldsmobile Chief's Cars.

  16. ' I have been down there alot lately and have seen trucks and stuff that looks brand new too... there is a scene support truck too? looks like a 10 wheeled modified box truck with a 4 person cab... i can't say for sure i didn't take a really good luck at it... but it would be nice to know what is there if we need it... why can't the tech rescue guys or hazmat guys staff it as a volunteer thing? just get it there type of thing ? '

    Letter To Legislators Burrows, Burton, Harckman, Myers, Nonna, Rogowsky, Ryan ;

As A Member Of The Public Safety & Security Committee I'd Like You To Be Aware That An Enormous Amount Of Federal Funds And Taxpayer Dollars ( Millions + ) Were Spent On Vehicles For Westchester County DES At Grasslands Reservation And MOST Of These Are Housed In A Special Garage Collecting Dust Because They Can NOT Be Manned Or Were NOT Needed. Numerous Attempts By Fire Service Personnel To Inquire How These Vehicles Can Be Special Called And/Or Utilized Were Met With SILENCE. This Is A Misuse Of Taxpayer $$$$ And Federal Funds And Someone Should Be Held Accountable For This Horse & Pony Show Before The Media Is Involved In An In-Depth Investigation. i.e. 1) A Field Communications Unit And Paid Lieutenant That ONLY Appear At Parades And Public Safety Expos Rather Than Responding To Major Fires, Etc. 2) Scene Support Trailers That Have Been Parked For 6+ Months And NO ONE Can Explain Their Purpose. 3) Collapse Rescue & Support Vehicles That Haven't Logged 500 Miles Since Being Purchased From A Long Island Fire Department.

  17. YES, You Are 100% Correct, The IC Did A GREAT Job At This Multi-Alarm Fire. I Just Question The Wisdom Of Spending So Many $$$$ On This Vehicle And NOT Utilizing It At Major Fires, Disasters, Etc. I Worked For Westchester County DES In It's Fledgling Days With Austere Budgets And It Seems Like BIG Amounts Of Federal Funds And Taxpayer Dollars Were Spent On Purchasing Many Vehicles

( Other Than New Training Engine & Ladder ) That Are NOT Utilized For Maximum Effect. I Serve On An Advisory Board In A New Jersey County That ALSO Spends Lots Of Money On Specialized Vehicles And Equipment But Uses Same To Maximum Efficiency Without Over Duplication !!!!!! I.E. The County Field Comm. Unit Is Staffed By Members Of The Sheriff's Department And Responds To POLICE/FIRE/EMS Incidents 24/7 !!!!!! FYI The County Is Also Building A 35 Million Dollar Dispatch Center At Our Fire Academy That Will Be State Of The Art And Have The Capability Of Dispatching Every POLICE/FIRE/EMS Agency In The County !!!!!! Why Does Westchester Maintain Two Different Dispatch Centers For County Fire And County Police ????

  18. ' Let me finish by saying I am not looking for fights or hurt feelings and have absolutely no stake in the million dollar toy that collects more dust than mileage, I am just interested in the thought process that would not consider a Mobile Command/Field Comm unit an asset on such a large operation. Lets face it the IC did a great job regardless. '
