  1. From a previous forum topic. This seems to outline a lot of what was in the Fitch study, and while there is a link to the actual study from WREMSCO they have removed the study. Maybe someone out there has more of it to add.
  2. http://www.nysheriffs.org/yellowdot "Yellow Dot is a free program designed to help first responders provide life-saving medical attention during that first “golden hour” after a crash or other emergency." A free, and potentially lifesaving, program that the New York State Sheriffs Association offers. How many people where you work do you think will take advantage of this?
  3. You don't think that even with the drills that private companies such as Empress have and some of the fire departments such as Yonkers, Mount Vernon, or White Plains, we would be able to handle something like this? The ability to call upon outside resources such as FDNY as well?
  4. I think it is something to look into. A few more thoughts that have come to me over the past few days sort of branching from what I first thought of. I know that with health insurance lately it has become common practice for providers to give breaks and incentives to those they cover when they belong to a gym or in some cases covering their gym fees since in theory it reduces health risks induced from a sedentary or unhealthy life style. Auto companies as I pointed out gave breaks to drivers that have a safe driving record or go for defensive driving classes. I know that a lot of insurance agencies give price breaks to MOS that have taken classes in CEVO or EVOC (something that I believe is mandatory in most departments for drivers). Maybe the cost of sprinklers could be covered in some way by the insurance company, similar to health insurance companies paying for gym memberships? A break if homeowners attend classes on fire safety or learn about the benefits of home sprinkler systems. I have heard, but am not sure if it is true, that people who live with a hydrant in front of their property or on it they get a reduction on their insurance, if this is true what about people living in areas such as Armonk that had dry hydrants on their property if possible, may a reduction for them too? Just some ideas that came to me.
  5. http://www.jems.com/article/major-incidents/navy-jet-crash-teaches-providers-many-le Interesting article on the review of how responders and dispatchers handled the Navy Jet Crash in Virginia Beach on April 6th this year. I was wondering what people think might happen if this happened where they worked, even with a central dispatch how would your region that may have a heavy mix of career, combo, and volunteer agencies. Would they be able to handle something like this?

  8. Interesting idea, how would you go about it? A lot of programs I know are incorporated into schools and cub/girl scout programs. Not by any means bashing this idea, just wondering how you or others might go about continued fire education for adults. Maybe as part of a homeowners insurance program or agreement? Or maybe like some auto insurance companies do with defensive driving classes etc., a reduced home insurance rate for taking classes in fire safety or such?
  9. Thanks for sharing! Awesome video and example of the dedication of these firefighters to their community and this man that continues from generation to generation in the firefighting community!!

I can't seem to find anything that has a date of the last time it was updated to be able to give me or anyone else a beter idea what is still active. If anyone out there has something newer or more accurate please share it!

Crews found heavy smoke throughout the basement and used the thermal imaging camera to locate fire in the basement roof and in the walls with extension to two neighboring apartments. Once the fire was located, the 10-75 was requested by Engine 122 and Ladder Tower 8 hit the hydrant and laid-in. The fire was knocked down roughly 30 minutes after that. 15. Yes, I am sorry I should have made it a little bit clearer lol. The grater than 30 is when the tag changes, and I accidentally put it as less than 30. I should have explained a bit more. Less than 30, but greater than 8 thanks for pointing this out so I can make it a bit more clear what I meant. Thank you helicopper. I think today also is a very clear example of the effectiveness of the management system we have in place. Several different agencies were able to work together, along with commercial agencies as well as FDNY. Case and point, the existing one is NOT a waste of time. Units were on location, deemed what they needed, were able to call in additional support, and prioritized the patients quickly and effectively as well as determining the appropriate facilities to transport them to in a very timely manner. If the existing MCI management we have in place was not effective and indeed a waste of time why was today so successful?
  16. The major difference between EMS agencies in Westchester and NYC, and it may be the same in northern counties, but I cannot speak for sure since I don't know how they works, is that NYC uses an orange tag. Everything else is pretty much the same. Black: Dead or injuries that are not survivable, no airway Red: Life threatening injuries requiring immediate transportation, need to reposition an airway, respiration rate is less than 30, no radial pulse, fails to follow commands, and is non-ambulatory Yellow: Non-life threatening injuries, have an airway, respiration rate is greater than 30, has a radial pulse, follows commands, and is non-ambulatory Green: Minor injuries, ambulatory Orange (NYC only): Chest pain, respiratory distress, stridor, increased work of breathing, head/chest trauma This is just what I have come to understand. Again I am not sure if this applies to areas outside of NYC. Anyone that has more information about the Westchester system or any corrections to what I know feel free to add.
  17. Nice photos! By far one of my favorite and more represented parades in the region.
  18. http://www.wtsp.com/news/national/article/261272/81/Using-Social-Media-To-Contact-9-1-1 Came across this article today off of JEMS. Wondering what others thoughts on this might be. Especially in light of hoax 911 calls and instances of such as the one today in Rye, http://www.lohud.com/article/20120627/NEWS/306270104/Police-decry-false-report-Rye-home-invasion?odyssey=tab%7Ctopnews%7Ctext%7CFrontpage

Is there something that other airports around the nation are able to learn from then level of preparedness that this "local" airport has?
  21. Thanks for providing an insiders input to my question!
  22. http://www.mass.gov/eohhs/provider/licensing/occupational/emt/initial-training/overview/public-health-oems-training-basic.html I found this off the Massachusetts Health and Human Services website. It would appear to be 100 hours of classroom and field training and 10 hours of in-hospital observation, so a total of 110 hours.
  23. From the article I believe it said, "EMTs are subject to 26 days of training". I would think that these are full days and not working days, but I am not sure. Maybe somebody that holds a MA card could answer this for us.
  24. http://www.jems.com/article/news/study-finds-emt-certification-easy-obtai Interesting article. Any thoughts?
  25. I agree. Especially in the instance of a fire like this one. You have multiple floors and apartments to check and if the first arriving units are tied up assessing patients and not able to make entry to look for trapped people. If you are able to have both respond on the alarm assignment this allows the initial fire units to enter and search for trapped individuals while EMS is able to asses those that are out of the building. At a big scene I think it is best to keep everyone operating in the area they responded with, fire with fire, EMS with EMS, and then once the situation has been sized up begin to fill in where necessary. I am not saying that EMT-B EMT-P FFs are not capable of delivering care, but at a working fire such as this one I think it is more important for them to be able to make initial entry upon arrival rather than spend valuable time that they could be looking for trapped people caring for those already out that responding EMS could handle.
