  1. So guys can give the best replies you may need to provide more info. The reason I say this is because I know in Ulster Co there are firehouses that are owned by the company and rented to the districts not owned by them and all combinations there of. Are you guys a district or company? Is the building district or company owned? Also is the existing property even going to be able to sustain a larger firehouse? I know of existing firehouses in flood plains in Ulster County. Personally I think grants and grant writers need to be explored. Also the low interest revolving loan is a home run.
  2. On the subject of shared services. The below article below talks about when North Hudson Regional Fire & Rescue (NJ) was formed. This article points out considerations and obstacles that most never consider. Especially why a project like this could take years and also why some would opt out.   3. As you can tell from the posts above Morning Pride makes EMS 1999 gear. I believe they also make 1999 dual cert with the NFPA 1951 which is USAR use. Parts of the 1951 also cover extrication. Lion Apparel also makes some really nice 1999/1951 gear called TR51. I know Globe makes it also but have no experience with it. Ricochet also makes a wide array of 1999 & 1951 gear. You see most of the private agencies in the city wearing it. They usually have R/O triple trim on theirs to stand out. Ricochet also makes a 1999 & ANSI class III coat / pant set. If you are on a true budget they make an extrication set which is basically the 1999/1951 without the moisture barrier and no cert. You could even do a 1999 but with a Nomex shell. I've dealt with Lion and Ricochet on their stuff and have nothing but good to say. There are a ton of options out there but it will take some research & time. Good luck.

  5. The Cairns Defender visor will not fit over all glasses. This depends on the eye glass frame and the wearer's face. The narrower the eye glass frames the better the chance that they will fit under the Visor.

  7. When we were in the basement there were rooms stacked to the ceiling with company journals. Shelves with every inch stacked with boxes of photos, old helmets, boxes, tools and even parts of hand drawn wagons. There was stuff that people found in attics of relatives that were brought there and stuff from make shift 911 memorials. It is very humbling. I didn't watch the entire video but I believe the gentleman in the video worked in the Tin House during the war years. He is walking talking FDNY firefighting knowledge and history. He has truly forgotten more than I will ever learn.
  8. The real treasures are where eyes will never see them, the basement. There is more uncataloged history of the FDNY in the basement than a life time of researching could provide.

  10. I think they (Ferrara) will do fine. As for "see what they like and go for the low bidders". It just doesn't usually work that way. I wish I could road test a Range Rover and get it for the price or a Jeep Liberty and warranty of a Hyundai. The fact of the matter is what FFs like best and what is the most versatile and cost efficient are typically diametrically apposed. Example: modern helmets vs traditional helmets. Anyways back to the rigs what works in one spot in the city may not work in another. Hence the appartus design must be able to do minimums in every part of the city.
  11. The Ferrara MVP will be at FIRE Expo 2009 (aka Cheif's Show) The Reading KME TDA I was told had specially designed outriggers so that the plates were not needed. The plates I was told were left on because the design change was after the rig was in production.

  14. Yes, the Fire Vulcans do. The standard Vulcans do not.
  15. For starters the HALOGEN Fire Vulcan is an okay light. Even guys who think they are buffy are impressed by the rear LEDs. The batteries do stink however these are domestically available batteries so you don't have to go to a fire service provider. Either way though they are heavy. Reinterating what 10-8 said, the biggest problem I've had is the bulb falling out and sliding around in the light. This is on the older models, they have supposedly put on rubber bumpers and wire bulb holders to combat this. I actually had the bulb pop out at a job and I was super pissed about this for a long time. To this day I only use my Fire Vulcan if I have the roof and need the extra strength to see roof lines before deciding which way to go. The LED Fire Vulcan is a GREAT. There is no bulb issue and it is so much lighter. Spend the extra few bucks and save it through cost of ownership over the first few years.
  16. I took their four hour class back a few years ago at FDIC East in AC. It was excellent. I had substantial prior TIC experience and I learned a lot. Actually after taking their basic class thats when I learned how much I didn't know. The class I took was a basic 2 hr class room 2 hr burn.
  17. I wasn't working (vacation) but I was informed that 48/56 first due. 48 was just taking up from an EMS box, 56 was 10-84 by themselves 48 arriving plus a delay in water. Can man held it back and received burns. Correct me if I'm wrong but thats what the B/U told me. When they said it was behind the gas station, I thought it was the pizzeria glad its okay.

  19. I think a little bit off target as color fastness does vary material to material but totally accurate. The moisture barrier is the part of the garment that deteriorates and most people don't realize this. Use the analogy of a tire. The tread is the shell and the side wall is the moisture & thermal barriers. Your tire tread may be in great shape with 100,000 miles but the side walls are shot making them unsafe. Turnout gear manufactures have for years been actually saying the useful life span is < 10 yrs for structural firefighting. In reality NFPA put in place the 1851 Standard because some fire depts just don't take care of their stuff or even take the time to inspect it.
  20. What is the material? The material plays a big part of that. Example a "Gold Pbi" is the natural color so it won't change as much as black Pbi that is dyed. Some materials have better color fastness or are affected by die sublimation less. Furthermore just because it is Pbi does not mean it is manufactured by Pbi Performance Products Inc. It maybe made by some one else under lisencing agreements with a twist in the recipe. Anyone responding I hope will state the color, material & weight (oz/yd) because these facts will help the brother draw good conclusions. Maybe mention your number of washes per year, storage practices and number on contaminations. I wouldn't mention brand of gear as it draws conclusions and could make someone look silly.
  21. I have nothing against youth. I was, am, and by fire serive (TOJ) will be for a long time a young know it all. I however learned the difference between hearsay and personal experience.

  23. As per the prior statement: "And FD and EMS are not allowed to ride the train, only PD." As a clarification only PD ride the train for free, unless we're in uniform on official business. (Not speaking for EMS, don't know their deal) I do think that the city selectively enforces the residency requirements and I think you will see it enforced even less with the amount of EMS promotions. Not an EMS bash, just saying if the city is promoting a ton of EMS to fire and they can live anywhere as EMS this can open a can of worms as I don't see possibly hundreds relocating this year alone. Don't get me wrong I'm all for them getting rid of this rule. I'll be a straight shot further up the thruway if it were not for it. Stay safe.
  24. We may get out the door faster but. When you have a crew seated in a spare rig with four guys facing backwards all yelling so what is it? What do? For that matter facing whichever way. It stinks. Instead of a guy at the watch who will do any thing in his power to communicate clearly the info, we can get with marbles in the mouth, crap radios, or delayed info. All of these lead to confusing puzzle no matter whom great each piece is. This type of dispatch also delays any CIDs info.
  25. thats a design feature that you don't like. thats usually the fault of the FD wanting 10 lbs in a 5 lb bag and a salesman who is too greedy to say NO or come up with a creative solution. I would personally be interested in how they are. Reliability? Integretity? Quality of workmanship? Function? Did you get your dollar's worth?
