  1. Does anyone on here know FACTUALLY (not asking for opinions) how many active interior qualified volunteers are on the current roster in Rye?

I went on city's website ryeny.gov and watched the Rye City Council budget workshop from Nov 16 2015 and during the discussions about personnel it was stated that there were

18 volunteer interior firefighters & 17 career interior firefighters.

    x635 and fdalumnus like this

  2. FirNaTine - From what I was told on Monday Rye's 3 front line apparatus are STAYING in Rye (E 191/E192/L25).

3 additional Career Firefighters will cover Rye during the hours of the parade

which will give us 2 Career Firefighters on each piece of apparatus.

I do not know if any Volunteer Firefighters will skip the parade and come to the Stations to stand by.

  3. I would not call the Dry Standpipe system installed on I95 in Rye totally useless. Granted it is not the best designed system ( no Stortz connectors - need adapters carried on Rye Engines). For an extended operation like a Propane or other Tanker fire it might come in handy. To put it into operation requires a COORDINATED effort.

And there are areas that are not covered by the System yet - pretty much where the fire occured at MM 14.0 to the CT state line. If that Trailer was full of a Class A type load (instead of water bottles) on scene operations might have been longer.

  4. Steve, You have to put the pressure on your Dad to get some double yellow lines on both Locust and Purchase streets - even if just like 12 feet out from the intersection. Cars are all over the place without it. You think the Right turn is bad, wait till you do the LEFT onto Purchase from 26's bay.

  5. Mutual Aid is a very grey area. Is it being called for additional personnel at the scene, another Engine for pumping, Ladder for elevated stream, Fast Team, etc. Then there is coverage for the department that is committed to an incident.

Sometimes closer is not the textbook answer to what is required (sufficient manning and timely response).

  7. Rye does not have tillered ladders any more because it takes 2 to get it on the road.

The career firefighter for ladder 25 would sit in quarters waiting for a tillerman and the rig was not getting out.

Also in Rye are the LOW Metro North overpasses which make it tough for an enclosed tiller seat to fit under.

I am sure Port Chester wrestled with both these issues as well as the financial aspect.

    Sometimes CHANGE has to happen.

Good Luck to Harry Howard Company with the new stick!
