  1. Don't make this more difficult than what it really is. The department numbers are in alphabetical order as originally determined by the Westchester County Fire Chiefs Emergency Plan circa 1940. The original County Fire Control was at White Plains FD HQ. The number "2" was selected because, phonetically speaking, it has a harder sound to it but and it is easier to hear than to say a "one." ...and so it goes.....
  2. While neither are among the "greatest" movies ever made, "Backdraft" beats "Ladder 49" hands down !
  3. Does anybody get the feeling that the show should be 30 minutes rather than 60 ? How many times can they make the point that you WILL get wet when visiting Niagra Falls ? ...and....could they have selected a slower house in Boston ?They went a week without a fire call ? Shades of City Island !! and one final thing.....Real officers tell their men what to do...and lead by example. While use of PPE at the car fire was machoism at it's best, the situation should have been dealt with at the scene and not back at the firehouse. Officers need to be defenitive with their men. I thought that the Lieutenant was gonna put the issue up to a vote !!!
  4. Two words....JET BLUE !!!
  5. Or, you can do JFK to Orlando for $ 59 each way. I'm outta here !! Gotta go see the mouse.
  6. OK....all you Mt. Vernon pizza freaks.....there's only one pizza in the world.....JOHNNY'S....originally on E. 3rd St. and now on W. Lincoln Ave.....Nothing else can compare !!!
  7. It's all about the money !!!
  8. Most Civil Service tests take 6 months for results.
  9. The redesign of The Journal News is awful. You can't find the local news, stories are blurred by the advertisements and everything runs into each other. Over the last few months, I have noticed that the Westchester/Putnam editions have carried more and more Rockland news. Thank you very much....but I'm really not interested if two parking meters were removed off of Main Street in Piermont. As to the web site, it seems that The Journal News is trying to adopt a regional concept into it's design. Hence, LoHud for Lower Hudson. PLEASE...I'm not an idiot. I lnow where I live. The web site design has taken a step backwards and looks very cheap and unimagenative. Oh well.
  10. Get over it. Not gonna happen. When they change the name on the outside of the rig to say "Anybody Can Ride" FD, then maybe !!
  11. MUTCD - Manual of Uniform Traffic Contol Devices. Those rules are meant for highway construction vehicles....not fire apparatus.
  12. Take notes here: Sation 1/HQ - Engine 6/Truck 2 Station 2 - Engine 5/Rescue 1 Station 3 - Engine 3 & Truck 3 - Car 2 Station 2 - Engine 2 & Engine 4
  13. Being a incident commander on a structural fire isn't all that hard if you follow NIMS and stop being a firefighter with red lights and start being a leader. All the hard stuff falls on your division commanders and team leaders. R u kidding ?
  14. Dyslexia ? Snorkel NEVER seemed right anyway....it was always "Truck 1."
  15. Specifications for a tanker, or any apparatus for that matter, are those that meet the defined need of YOUR department. Not the community next door or the GSA spec that is used by federal agencies. But the kind and type that works for your department. What works best for your department, for your operation, provides for commonality of operation between other apparatus in your departrment are the questions that you need to ask. For tankers, what is the purpose of the tanker (please say that the primary mission of the apparatus it is to transport water), size of tank, size of pump, commercial vs custom chasis, hose to be carried, carrying of manpower, etc. are additional issues that need to be discussed. Review NFPA requirements for tankers and then your ISO needs. But above all, the amount that you wand to spend on the truck must fit within a defined budget and can be accepted by the taxpayers and residents of your community.
  16. NYSEG's yard for Putnam and Westchester is in Brewster.
  17. LPG not used much around here for vehicle fuel. Experimented with out west in Wa, Ca, Or, Az.....not maintenance friendly and volitaile. Con Ed uses CNG in some vehicles....that's compressed natural gas. Need a cascade system to fast fuel vehicles or takes hours. Testing has shown that environmental benefits from CNG can be achieved by using cleaner diesel.
  18. HEAD's UP !! Westchester County has 4 hybrid buses on order. Should be delivered next spring. Will be garaged down in Yonkers but used on routes through out the county.
  19. The rig shown in the picture as Engine 6 was actually the first diesel powered fire apparatus in Westchester. It was also the first automatic for FDMV. Similar 1964 Mck CF's were originally assigned to Engine 3 and 4 were gasoline powered and sticks. The Engine #6 Mack went on to serve as the foam truck for a number of years.
  20. Weak....very weak conclusion. FEMA is a disorganization that repeats it's mistakes over and over again. It does not know how to tap all resources to combat and resolve major incidents. On the other hand, they are good at executing contracts with individuals and corporations but is unable to take charge of events to which it is coordinate ! Perhaps the NIMS concept needs to be reviewed by placing a big box around all of the others and label it "the big picture."
  21. Aaaahhhhh....what was the date of that Wal-Mart press release ?....and who is President ?
  22. Oh good ! More chaos created by the most inept federal bureaucracy there is !!! In accordance with Federal regulations, FEMA is supposed to call upon states to provide resources for a national incident. States then go to the counties and then down to the local level. In this incident, FEMA, in it's infinite wisdom, has not been doing this as far as the fire service is concerned. FEMA is great on paper.....however, they lack credibility in the real world.
  23. More disorginazation by FEMA. Well,...at least they are consistent !
