  1. There are several cross band repeaters (Armonk Fire 16/46.20MHz, Katonah Fire 16/46.22MHz) that link their respective Trunked System Talk Group to a low band frequency that would be channel two on the members pager.
  2. Personally I wear mine when I drive the rig. The comment I would like to insert into this thread is the stipulation in NFPA 1720 (The Volunteer FD Standard) that states "Upon assembling the neccessary resources at the emergency scene, the fire department shall have the capability to safely initiate an initial attack within two minutes 90 percent of the time". If a Driver is not suited up prior to arrival, this could cause a delay in meeting this requirement. I do agree with the posters above that this must be a personal descision based on how safely the Driver can get the apparatus to the scene.
  3. All "front line" apparatus and Chief's vehicles have Trunked Radios installed by Westchester County as part of the build out of the System, so all Westchester County FD's have access to the Trunked System. I was told by one Fire Chief that his FD would not be on the System because they have an FCC license to operate on 46.26MHz and the County can't tell them what they can or can't do on this frequency.
  4. From the pictures at Ferraras in Production it looks like this rig will be ready for delivery soon. Lookin Good.
  5. Seth, I was not at this scene but here is my insight on a couple of your comments. Yes, it did sound like some units were on Fire 12 and some on 46.26Mhz. Battalion 12 requested all units operate on 46.26Mhz because "Fire 12 is not working" in the area. Rescue 14 responded for "traffic control" because this rig is operated by Ossining Fire Police and Emergency Squad company. Their members are specifically trained, in addition to other FD training, in fire police, extrication and traffic control situations. From what I heard there was a 5" supply line across Route 9 near Scarborough Road, necessitating the closure of Route 9 at Rockledge Avenue (Arcadian Shopping Center). I will not comment on any of your other concerns, or any of the FD's involved in this incident, but from my personal experience as a FF and Officer the saying "...Two Hundred Years of Tradition unimpeded by Progress" still applies to some Westchester FD's.
  6. For those of you that have access to the Smithsonian Channel (not me ), Hydrotech: Fireboats airs tonight Saturday 7/24 @ 10P, and multiple other times this week.. The website says this episode is about Seattle FD's two new Fireboats and other Fireboats around the world. Definately looks interesting.
  7. Anyone going to this years New England Fire/Rescue/EMS Expo in West Springfield, MA. The Expo will be this coming Fri. 6/25 9A-4P, Sat. 6/26 9A-3P, & Sun. 6/27 9A-2P. I went last year for the first time and was impressed with the amount of apparatus and equipment on display. Here is a list of Exhibitors from last years Expo.

  10. The Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International, and The National Public Safety Telecommunications Council (NPSTC) have received American National Standards Institute (ANSI) recognition of their Standard Channel Nomenclature for the Public Safety Interoperable Channels. This Standard sets forth frequencies (on all bands), and requirements, that are available Nationwide for ALL Public Safety agencies to use for Interoperable Communications between agencies. Public Safety agencies can program these frequencies into mobile and portable radios as long as they have a valid FCC license. No frequency coordination or license amendments are required for the above mentioned mobile or portable radio use. Base station use would require frequency coordination, and additional FCC licensing. The purpose of this Standard is to provide commonality Nationwide of both frequencies, AND the designations of these frequencies. This means that 453.2125MHz will be known as UCALL40D, and not as, for example, channel 16 or interop 4, or whatever local designation previously was used for this frequency. Westchester County has received FCC authorization for Base/Repeater use of these frequencies with licenses WQLI 209 and WQLI 210. WQLI 210 provides for mobile and portable radio access for repeater operations on these frequencies. I have a source at 60 Control that has told me that Westchester County is looking to build out the UTAC/UCALL frequencies when funds become available. This source also told me that all the Trunked System Portables have been programmed with these frequencies, and he is hopeful to have these frequencies programmed in the Mobile Radios in the future. FYI - the City of White Plains has received FCC base station authorization for use of these frequencies. It would be advantageous for all Public Safety agencies to program these frequencies in their radios now before they are needed, rather than, if and when, they are called mutual aid to the next County (or State), or five County's away and they are unable to communicate with the local agency except for being handed a local radio from the host mutual aid agency on their local frequency. There may or may not be enough of these radios to hand out, and you may not have communications with the local agency except for cell phone (if service is available). Be proactive, and be prepared, get these frequencies progammed in your radios.
  11. I think you meant "affirmative" From dictionary.reference.com FYI - Word History : OK is a quintessentially American term that has spread from English to many other languages. Its origin was the subject of scholarly debate for many years until Allen Walker Read showed that OK is based on a joke of sorts. OK is first recorded in 1839 but was probably in circulation before that date. During the 1830s there was a humoristic fashion in Boston newspapers to reduce a phrase to initials and supply an explanation in parentheses. Sometimes the abbreviations were misspelled to add to the humor. OK was used in March 1839 as an abbreviation for all correct, the joke being that neither the O nor the K was correct.
  12. Here are some more pictures of todays White Plains fire. 13. I came across this while looking through the KME website. KME Kovatch Organization will be having an open house with tours of their assembly plant on Saturday July 10, 2010 from 10A to 4P. It says they will have various apparatus on display. With the tour of the plant, if anyone does go, you may see one or more of the several area apparatus that are in production. This does look interesting.
  14. bump Anyone planning on going this Saturday?
  15. Anyone going Saturday let's meet at the Main Gate (where you fill out your entry info and pay the entry fee) at 11AM. This way we can put a name together with a face. I will be wearing a black Honeywell hat. See you tomorrow.
  16. It's two hours for me too.
  17. Yeah, if they are into Fire Trucks. Here is a link to last year's Expo with pictures. There are about 50 - 75 apparatus, along with vendors from fire equipment (thermal imagers, lighting, etc.) to buff stuff (t-shirts, scale models, etc.) It took me about three to four hours to walk around the show, but I was talking to exhibitors and taking pics. No one says you have to look at everything. Bring the kids they will enjoy it, maybe not the ride to get there, but definately the show.
  18. I will be taking the ride up on Saturday.
  19. Here are some of the pictures I took last weekend 6/12/10 while onboard the Fireboat John J. Harvey. view of port side one of five motors two fo the five motors looking aft Engineer's station below deck Engine Room Motor Control signaling corresponding Motor Control signal in Wheelhouse pump pressure signaling in Engine Room. Note the chain drive above that goes up to the Wheelhouse. This is the same for the Motor Control signaling in the above pictures. pump pressure signaling in the Wheelhouse Before the crew started up the motors one of the crew pointed out various points in the Engine Room. One point of interest was that when the boat was built in 1931 German engineering was highly regarded, and some of the valves in this boat are from Germany. The above picture of a water valve clearly shows a German swastika (botom center). From what the crewmember told me the swastika was originally a symbol denoting German craftsmanship. Another point of interest is that the diesel motors are cylinder opposed, which means that each cylinder has two pistons. Both pistons compress to ignite the fuel, as opposed to single cylinder diesels which a single piston compresses against the cylinder head. These are some of the water valves leading to the monitors Bow monitor Three monitors on "The Tower" View of "The Tower" Center monitors with Tower to the left view of the Wheelhouse Tower monitors flowing water Fireboat.org, the website of the John J. 20. That' s Deuce and a half on steroids.
  21. According to this page, just like last year it is $10 entry and $5 for parking. I went on Saturday last year and it took me two hours to get there.
  22. Interesting. I have not heard of this type of set up. All the Fire Districts I am aware of have independently elected Fire Commissioners.
  23. The Village of Mamaroneck's FD is a Department of the Village Government (i.e. Police, DPW, etc.) and receives it's funding from the Village Gov't. The Town of Mamaroneck FD is a Fire District, not funded by the Town of Mamaroneck Gov't. The Fire District determines how much it needs for it's annual budget and submits this to the Town Government and they are required to collect this amount from the residents of the District, just like the Town Gov't collects other District tax assesments (i.e. School District, Water District, etc.) to fund those Districts. The TMFD is "run" by a Board of Fire Commissioners just like other Fire Districts such as Millwood, or any of the Town of Mount Pleasant Fire Districts.
  24. DAMN, I'm more of a buff than I thought!
  25. Belltown?
