A couple of months ago I happened to drive by this house and was unable to snap some pic's. This week I finally got them, so here they are.

The quarters of FDNY Ladder 47.

The quarters of FDNY Engine 64.

And their relation to each other.
They are located on Castle Hill Avenue, Bronx.
This firehouse was mentioned previously in this FDNY E45/L58 Firehouse thread.
Here are a couple more pics with some more detail.

Some additional detail of the L47 house.

Some additional detail of the E64 house.

This is a little way off, but the Intrepid Air, Sea, Space Museum is hosting a Firefighter Appreciation Weekend at the Intrepid on July 16 & 17, 2011 (Saturday & Sunday).
Looking at last years schedule of events it looks like the blessing of the FDNY Marine Fleet is scheduled for 1100 on Saturday. When more info is posted I will pass it on.

I find it hard to believe that any dept. would consider 2 years as enough time/experience as a firefighter to be able to supervise and instruct other firefighters. In many cases they have just completed probation. How many actual fires and emergencies could an individule go on to "learn the trade" in 2 years?
I am not trying to make this a career/vol. issue, but how can the career side accept volunteers as "the same" when we require our new firefighters to have 2x the training level as your Lt., just to graduate the fire acadamy and respond to calls as a probie under the direct supervision of an officer
If you do not have enough personnel that can meet the standard that you have set (which I have already commented on as being very substandard as well as dangerious to the public, the members and themselves) then its time to reconsider how you deliever fire protection.
If there are not enough trained personnel, you need to recruit more, hire more, train more or consolidate with another dept. so that you can meet the most basic of standards for providing protection to the community.

It's open to the public and our neighbors of the fire service. The residents of Ossining own this equipment. This is part of the comrade we have with our brothers/sisters in the fire service. Here's a great opportunity to see what the OFD recently purchased. Perhaps another department will see something they like or dislike, who knows. Also take in financially what the equipment cost, etc. etc.... On a personal note when I attend Parades or Inspections throughout the year I like to see what other equipment dept's have on their apparatus and how its setup and operational....

    Front of R5.

    Rear of R5.

Looking inside the rear box. Note the red reflective striping around the rear perimeter.

View of the top of the rig.

An "antenna bar" with eight antennas attached to the front of the rear box.

Very sturdy grab rails along both sides. This rig appears to be built of heavy duty materials. The white speaker on the left is the intercom to the front cab.

AirPak Brackets and seating in the rear box.

Radios at the front of the rear box. There is a sliding window just above this on the front of the box.

Netting for compartments with roll up doors also.

Rear wall of the front cab.

From the Village of Mamaroneck Board of Trustees Meeting 10/12/10 this will be a 100' LowProfile Tower Ladder. The bid was accepted at this meeting for NorthEast Fire Equipment to furnish this apparatus.
Also, according to the latest Westchester County Apparatus Plate Assignment list, the Village of Mamaroneck has Tower Ladder 20 reserved.

I am not for totally taking away their ability to collectivley bargain ( notice I said a ability, not right) - but when these contracts are negotiated, someone needs to be at the table representing the taxpayer- you have huge amounts of money over the years going from unions into the politcal campaigns of the same people who are supposed to be on the " management" side- I feel that for the most part no one in the public sector should be paid more than what someone doing the same job in the private sector would be paid. Why do you think the unions have gotten all of these exemptions from Bamacare?
  12. SteveOFD liked a post in a topic by Bnechis in Ossining, county mark start of historic police merger
The crime rate in some areas of Westchester is(or was) greater than the areas of NYC I mentioned. And a county dept in Westchester would not have the right stuff if it was properly sized? Since police patrol, the number of stations does not have a major affect on response times.
How does more precincts benifit other than it might save a mile or 2 drive. The costs are stagering and how often does the public go to the stations?
The playland "precinct" is really a substation and I think other than in name is not really a "precinct".
You are correct that depts could merge stations, the question is what is the right number?
Did you know that New Rochelle Police HQ is closer to parts of Larchmont, Town & Village of Mamaroneck, Pelham, Pelham Manor, Mt. Vernon, Eastchester, Bronxville, Tuckahoe and a very small portion of Scarsdale and Yonkers than to parts of New Rochelle? That would indicate that since it covers 100% of New Rochelle, the distance could cover much more (I do not think it would be physically large enogh or so configured to cover all of that area). Now the northern most 50 streets in New Rochelle are actually closer to White Plains PD HQ than to NRPD HQ.
What is the right size coverage area for a police precicnt? I don't know what if any formula is use (I know fire & EMS ones and I would think PD's are normally larger because they patrol vs. respond from the staation).
Based on the 1/2 way point between NRPD & WPPD I worked out a precinct radius of 3.75 miles. Based on that a single police dept in Westchester would need about 12 precincts. Nassau County has 8 (plus some local PDs) and they cover an area that is 25% smaller (433 vs. 287 sq miles). So I figure my quick #'s are not far off.
Lets see that a reduction of about 60% from the current number of stations. Cutting the cost of maintenance, insurance, staffing, replacement, etc. can we reduce our taxes, while improving capabilities, i would think so. Someone with a backround in police deployment will be better suited to do this than I, but with just a few minutes work, I think I have shown it is possible.

We will no longer allow discussion, questioning, or debate here on what color light lenses belong where, what is compliant, etc. Most members don't like seeing these discussions over and over again. It's come to the point where these threads are counterproductive, and don't add anything to this forum. Quite often, they hijack the thread and lead it off course. If you want to read up on these topics, there are numerous to choose from. Just do a search.

Matt, I'm very sorry to hear of your health issue. Please accept my sincerest hopes that your future finds no further issues.
As far as the career vs. volunteer coverage, I'm not seeing a direct line or corollary to your issue. Does your diagnosis indicate the problem was as a result as your duties as a firefighter? I'm pretty certain none of my "career firefighter specific benefits" would include an illness or injury that was not job-related. My healthcare benefits as an employee would. The difference is that my healthcare benefit as a career firefighter is the same as our police officers, public works crews, and clerical staff. I would assume that your healthcare plan provided by your primary employer would be key. Of course I know many do not have health insurance which is a huge issue we all struggle to answer. My point being my healthcare benefits as a career firefighter are really just healthcare benefits as an employee on a job where healthcare is offered and constantly renegotiated and adjusted. I must give you that I'm not a career firefighter in NY, but I know of no specific benefits that are only extended to career firefighters in my state.
I wish you all the luck in the world.

Here are some of the pictures "Mrs." SteveOFD took of Monday mornings fire.

The 5" supply line from the hydrant toward the scene.

    Just short of the scene.

There was snow to contend with that morning.

Ladder 42 working at maybe it's last job.

Crew operating on the D side.

Engine 97 dropped it's whole hosebed.

Engine 96 pumping from a larger main from Wolden Road up Underhill Road.

The 5" line coming up Underhill Rd. from Engine 96.

The 5" line continues up Underhill Rd.

The 5" line up to Engine 99 for relay.

Engine 99 at the relay pumping to Engine 97. Approximately 800' from Engine 96, and then approximately 700' to Engine 97.
Mrs. SteveOFD walked up to the scene to ask if I wanted my camera. I told her I was working the job (at E99 pumping), but if she wanted to take some pictures she could. These pictures were taken as any civilian could have, she was granted no special access beyond what any civilian could have gotten.
