  1. Talk about a KME version of Empire H & L Co. 1's Seagrave in Nyack Sweet!!!! Being an engine guy I would be confused at first LOL. Very different but very functional.
  2. Ummm Has anyone taken account that some of the suff in the firehouses such as crew and social quarter stuff may not be from municiple / tax funds but from other means. I have a feeling that if it was, it would have been brought up a long time ago. I think this is a distortion. How many fire companies / Departments, paid or volunteer actually get to use funds to furnish the whole fire house?? I know up here for vols, usually it comes from the membership fund raisers mostly and that certain things such as bunks would be provided. The usually don't come out of the operating budget. As for a lot of the paid departments, there are a lot of them that get donated couches and chairs, though the cities do provide for much more. News media always assume that everything is paid for by the district / municipality and they never ask how much comes from funds the individual company / department raised for emenities. There is a lot that has to be looked at before you go by what a news artical says. Trust me, I was on the receiving end once with my department and it is not fun trying get your words corrected and acusations retracted when they are not true. Why doesn't someone ask someone from the districts, such as the commissioners, chiefs or line officers or past officers that hade 25+ years and ask them why such the growth. I'm not sticking up for anyome or making accusations, just ask and doen't ask someone who has less that 5 years in, they might not know everything about the dept yet and are srill learning, or they might, but as a lot of people. There it that long island forum.........
  3. So dog, not starting the paid vs. vollie thing, but do you concider vols who get a tax break are scabs too??????
  4. I've always used hurst and like them, however I did try out the Holmatros, TNT tools and paratech bags and tools and like then as well.
  5. If you go to Frank Raffa's site fdnewyork.com (a Brooklyn supervising dispatcher) list all the run stats for the companies. He separates them too into runs workers and EMS it think. Check it ut City Island, the last I check for '04 were the lowest and I don;t think they come off the island since they are prety much it for 6 miles, give or take a few. Plus I know the Coast Guard Auxillary has a boat there or at least used to.
  6. Just FYI It's not a walk through, it' a walk in and the cab has storage compartments behind the driver / officer. Just go to BWVFD 14's web site. A walk through would be line FDNY's old HME's where they can walk from the cab to the back box.
  7. And this is gonna protect you how??? I ride and this is the most riduculos <sp> thing I have seen. I have gotten into an accident before and there is no way this is helpful in my opiniton, infact I think this would rally hinder the operator more by 1. partially blocking the view of the operater while it is inflating and also the fact of "airbag" dust. 2. injuring the operator or causing the operator to be "thrown off" the bike 3. loss of control off the bike due to the bag hitting into the arms of the operator and possibly causing the operator to take his/her hands off the controls. 4 Most morotcycle accidents involve operators landing to one side or being ejected off the bike when they are hit or hit into an object. I see a lot of problems and saftey concerns to the operator with this. The only way to stay safe on a bike is to wear the appropriate saftey equipment, be very aware and vigilant when you driver like you are taugh during the saftey courses and educate other drivers about watching out for motocycles. Just my point of view
  8. But haven't HAZMAT 1 usually been using one of the old rescues, I know the used either Rescue 3 or 4's Mack then they got the HME / Saulsbury fron Rescue 4 for a while didn't they oe was that just done for use of a spare unit and they had their own ring since 2001 / 2002?
  9. Check out Scannermater, scannerworld and in CT I've never had a problem with Lentini communications in Newington. The have a website and have decent shipping rates. I have two 780's, on for the car with ScannerMaster's remote head (lot of money but woth the investment if you don't want to cut holes or have space for a scanner). Both run good, and the only APCO 25 system that is near me is CSP but I don;t want to listen to them. Another good one is the BCT-8, trucnking, non P25 and does not have PL/DPL but a good mobile scanner. I think it's a cross between the 350C and the old BC200 100 chennel (I think I got this model number wrong)
  10. Hey everyone. I have found the link to FEMA's report on Boston's turnout police. It's long but worth the time to read and understand. Boston spent a lot of time on this and I have to agree with their findings. This policy was placed in 2000 http://www.usfa.fema.gov/pdf/efop/tr_02dm....r%20policy' Cut and paste the link. It's 52 pages but very informative. Iz
  11. Ladder 49, better in everyway. Though Backdraft was good with Hollywood, I can only watch Kurt Russell swing an ax at burning boxes so many times.
  12. Maybe like what a lot of departments do, designated the primary function of the unit. If it's gonna carry all the rescue tools, then it should be a rescue. Doesn't matter to me as long it does the job. TFD guys, Good Luck with the new unit!
  13. See my post above. I'm looking into the protocol for 3/4 boots but thay have been able to wear them for quite sometime now.
  14. But you forgot something. Even though we can't refuse transport and the whole legality issue, we can determine the "severity of themedical emergency" with the med doctors at a hospital. The doctor / triage nurse can prioritize the patient and wether they go into teh ER or triage. I have had many of the "hey taxi" calls where the problems are "non emergency" calls. Thank you EMD for the cold reponses and thank you triage for putting people in order by severity. Many of these calls are starting to subside, but we still have to act. People are starting to realize that coming by an ambulance does not get you in faster. Especially when the hospials start going on certain diversions.
  15. Do you mean truck / ladder instead of engine or am i misunderstanding you?
  16. Actually as an officer I can say what the Loo did was right by saying something at the firehouse. Also he should have said something there, though not in depth as he did at the firehouse. And I don't care what people think of me when I tell someone to do something if its to make sure my guys / girls are safe. But as firefighters, you have to respect the officer for what he did and the reasons why he did what he did. We only are going by what they are showing on the scenes. And since this is a TV Show, we actually don't know if the Loo did in fact say something at the scene. You all know the media / TV producers do cut out footage that doesn't "fit" the program to what they want, to what 37 / 26's want. Heck just look at every call we have responded to and what was said on the news, usually it's only 25 to 50 % right. PS I'll be the first to admit I've failed to wear my PPE correctly and truct me I've been yelled at 1000's of times. And for my two cents on the lenth of the show, 60 minutes is fine, you have to show that these are regular guys as well. There is a life outside of the firehouse.
  17. I can say for myself that sometimes having a helmet that you like and your department allows you to wear gives you a secure feeling or many people like to have the tradition of the leather or an older style helmet that is up to today's stnadards, even the "I like that helmemt I want it" Me, I grew up seeing everyone having leathers or the old "duck bill" Pheonix helmets. I tried it and liked it. I also like the 1010 due to the New Yorker style. My leather helmet and Gemtor belt are the only 2 pieces of equipment I have purchased, everything else I have (the other 95%) is department issued.
  18. Hard to break old habits I guess, but still this day and age, especially being filmed wether they are at a real call or like the begining says "many parts of the program are recreated due to saftey concerns" still should follow the rules. As for the Ladder stuff, Boston is the most agressive aerial ladder department in the USA. Where ever they can place the rig (experienced or not) they will do so. As for ground ladders, they do use them, but with most of the calls that have been shown, they are at 4 or mor story buildings and with some of those tenaments it is difficult to place ground ladders. However during a samll commercial, business or in residental buildings (triples) they have ground ladders set up. I have buffed Boston many times since I have relatives up there. Firefighting is very agressinve up there, almost more agressive than FDNY. There is a site where has Bostons' SOG's. I'll try to find it and post it here. Also, notice Boston truckies can still wear 3/4 boots and coats, but most wear turnouts. This has been in effect since the 1990's and I think it was due to rehab concerns. I know for a fact it was checked with NFPA and OSHA before being implimented. I'll double check it.
  19. Just remember all, ALF has been bought, sold and consolidated with other companies and also being on thier own through out their 125+ history. My company still operates a Century series pumper built in 1981 when Figgie owned the company and it set to be replaced soon, though not with another ALF, that's another story. Who knows what will happen, but I can see what happened after Figgie had done to the company and how Frieghtliner bailed them out all over again if the buyers don't do it right. Hahn, Maxim, Pirch and Young are gone for ever and Mack saw a loosing market. Hopefully we won't loose anohter single source manufacturer go by the wayside.
  20. Bridgeport Engine 16 is a 75 ft. Pierce quint. I saw it in operation several times. It was purchased I beleive to fill the requirement of having an aerial device (not a ladder company) to cover the north end of the city since most of the ladders are central in the city. It was sent to the Latex Foam Factory fire in Ansonia, CT (western New Haven County) back in 2001 and I believed it was used as an elevated master stream. (Bridgeport also sent a ladder, engine and command unit as well).
  21. Hahn apparatus that I know of that are in Connecticut Bridgeport = Engine 3, Engine 5 (now disbanded by the Mayor. BOO!!!!) and a spare New Cannan = Had a Hahn engine which I think is a spare Engine 9 Nichols FD in Trumbull - at one time had all hahns. Engine 302 and truck 304 ("Fresh air and Sunshine") which is a air, lighting and tactical truck. Engine 301 was sold a couple of years ago and was replaced recently by a Seagrave, and Engine 305 which I beleive was sold recently. Derby - Storm Engine = Ran a 1960's Hahn up until 1996 when it was replaced witha Pierce Arrow. The engine is now owned by the Birmingham Fire Association apparatus club. Seymour = Engine 13 was a 1982 Hahn pumper that was replaced around 2000. It is in actrive service in New Haven as Engine 16 (now all white) and Great Hill Hose Engine 16 was a twin to Engine 13 and was recently replaced. Shelton = Quad 30 is a newer Hahn (i beleive it a HCP-15 model) with a Ranger walk in rescue body in service at Huntington Co. 3. Also Co. 3 had a 1960's Hahn pumper that was refurbished in the late 80's early 90's that was retired from service in 2001. Engine 2 at Echo Hose Co. 1 was retired from service in 2002 and sold and I belive that went into service with the department who bought it. White Hill CO. 5 is retireing Engine 53 a 1970's Hahn and it's being shipped down to Louisiana or Mississippi (donated). UCONN - Storrs = Still Have a 1980's Hahn engine in service New Haven = Engine 16 at Light House Point Station (near Tweed-New Haven Airport) runs Seymour's old Engine 13 Hahn Hamden - Dunbar Hill Vol. Engine 8 is a 1970's Engine Bethany - Engine 82 is a refurbed Hahn pumper bough from West Haven during the 90's West Shore FD - West Haven - Engine 33 is a refurbished Hahn pumper at the main station. Currently a reserve / Vol. piece North Branford - ET 11 is formerly a Hahn that was rebuild with an E-One glider kit and I beleive Engine 2 in Nortford is a Hahn Waterbury I beleive still have some Hahns left as spares. I wish Hahn, as well as Maxim and Mack would reform and build trucks again. Izzy
  22. 95.1 aka I-95 has not changed there format in several years, just rock and they play a good variety, nothing really heavy though. WPLR in New Haven used to be really good but they play the same rotation Led Zep, the Stones ect. over and over again and have been doing so for quite some time. WCCC 106.9 in hartford is aa sure bet. Plus too I can pick these three up when I'm heading up RT 28 into the Catskills but I start to lose it near Olivia. There was another rock station down in Stamford but I can't pick it up where I am, but I can pick up K-Rock in New Haven County though scraty. Radio hasn;t been the same in 10 years. XM or Sirius seems the way to go now.
  23. Back in the early 1900's when my fire company was organized, people in my woard saw a need to have another company. Back then, the areas were small and most of the apparatus were hand drawns still with a few having horses pull the trucks. We didn't motorize until 1918-1921. So my firehouse is located only less than a 1/4 mile from the older company in my section of town, but the populations of the area is still large for a 1.5 square mile area of our town. Most fire companies had several reasons like previosuly mentioned by others in this threar, but also many were fourmed due to social, ethnic, religious, just plain "we don't like how they are doing it so we'll do it better" and of course spliting the membership to form another company because of the rapid growth of villages and towns. Check out all the fire company sites on thier histories, some of them are quite interesting.
  24. if you want a rock station check out WCCC in Hartford, CT. It's 106.9 FM or check them out on the web at www.wccc.com. Really good music, rock to heavy. Izzy
  25. I'll tell you, that mag mount 3-element mobile antenna from RS is on of the best antennas I have owned. I still have it in my attic and receives great.
