  1. Remember 585.... You mentioned Internal Cleansing? haha I highly recommend the NY Firehouse Grill "HAZ MAT WINGS" Just make sure you have good ventilation and SCBA. As Jim Carey said "DO NOT GO IN THERE"
  2. I am sure Empress would love to sign up Dobbs Ferry with a contract for daytime BLS unit. It's really sad to hear. Everywhere in EMS and FIRE the call volume goes up and the membership goes down or even worse... Your dedicated members get burned out. Personally, I see no problem augmenting your VAC with paid personnel or contract EMS provider. Admitting your having aproblem and not covering it up is a big step. Focus on what we do and why we do it. The PATIENT who someday could be YOU or a family member. The loss of time in the 10-15 minutes paging a crew that is not coming can make a difference. Now add to that the 5-15 minutes more of the mutual aid agency coming in. Look at that, now were up 20 or 30 minutes. While mutual aid is covering your calls who will cover a call in there own district? Are you burning them out? You have to look at the BIG picture here. I've been on both ends of this. The EMS responder and the concerned family member / friend waiting for the Ambulance. Delay in arrival of EMS is never good thing.
  3. You may want to contact Randy King at King Marina in Verplanck. A while back they purchased Garrison's old Fire Boat. It's been sitting in the yard for while. It looks nice, just needs some work.

  7. UPDATE: 1325 hrs Port Chester Car 2393 reports main body of fire knocked down. Requests C & O. Good Job Brothers!
  8. Just to pour some salt on my wounds of "911 System Failure" and the Nextel problems I attempted to call 911 tonight and report a Car Fire on 87. (Within NYC limits) 5 times dialing 911 on my Nextel... "System Busy Try Later-22" GOTTA LOVE THAT, HUH? Good job Nextel!! How does it go.. "Nextel...Done!"
  9. On the topic of 911 I must mention this. If you have a Nextel DO NOT try and Dial 911 on a Friday or Saturday night anywhere in the NYC area. I don't know if it's a Nextel problem or a NYC-911 System problem but you won't get thru. Better find an ERS Box. I placed a call to Nextel and I was told they are aware of it and "Looking into the problem". Not to bash Nextel, I have one and I like it a lot but I think maybe this problem could ONLY have a real bad ending someday if not already. 911 "System Busy, Try Later" WONDERFUL!!
  10. I saw something similar America's Most Wanted a month or so ago. They had a Special Report on Nextel Phones and Towers. Apparently a lot of the Nextel Phones and Towers utilize a 800 MHz band. This is close to some Law Enforcement, Fire, EMS, and Gov't bands. Too close! They are trying to get Nextel to make a switch of there equipment to another band. FCC is involved and it's a big mess. No one want's to make the band switch cause of $$$$. It showed a Police Officer who could not reach HQ, He was calling in a 10-13 (Officer Needs Assistance) Some other bad situations too. In all cases no one could get thru to Dispatch. Does anyone use 800 MHz around here and find problems?
  11. I will have to agree with alsfirefighter on this one.. Peekskill FD we run a lot of calls both Fire and EMS. Personally I don't feel it's necessary to have so many radio tests. We do one daily at 8am with all the rig radios and rig portables, run a bunch of calls in between and then again at 6pm we have another test for our department announcements, etc. On Monday nights we have an additional test at 8pm of the rig portables and chief officer radios. We do have our own frequency however I think all of the tests are unnecessary and do jam up the air on your own frequency or the countywide ones. As mentioned my personal favorite is the radio test in the middle of a working structure fire. Does anyone listen to the radio before they get on it for bull$hit? Most radios now have a self-test. If you have a radio that does not then check your battery. Is it charged? Good. Now turn the radio on. Press the PTT button if the lil red light comes on your good to go in most cases. If you have a repeater and you hear it key up even better. Do EMT's and Paramedic's shock each other to check and see if the defib units are working? NOT! Don't get me wrong...You MUST check all your Firefighting and EMS equipment but how often is where good judgment comes in. Maybe we should do radio tests with 60-Control at 2,3,and 4AM? Air is usually really quiet and I know they must be bored. Especially that "642" guy! Sorry John... I just had too!
  12. Every single FF gets a portable? Nice! Where can I get an application for Mount Kisco FD? Did Goosetown Communications see them coming? Good job Joey! $95,000 As far as FF Safety it's a great idea but if not used correctly... Oh boy!
  13. City of Peekskill Fire Department hired 2 Firefighters this week. This will be the last 2 hired off the old list. Anyone who took the recent test and is looking to get on the job GOOD LUCK!
  14. Hey DFFD227 and others... If you want to monitor 33.96 and your having problems try using Pound Ridge FD Link which is 453.350 with a DPL 664. It may help you!
  15. I was working a few weeks ago and involved in a MVA with my Armored Truck. AKA "Super SUV" I was not the driver and no one on board was injured however the car that cut us off was not so lucky. The driver was a little shook up and complaining of neck and back pain. Pretty good MOI if you ask me but she was AOX3 all that good stuff. Anyway... I called 911 and I got the NYPD operator. Things got worse. I don't think the operator finished English as a second language class yet. I gave VERY CLEAR directions and information. Armored Car vs. Car on Morris Ave between E167 and E168 St. Neck and back pain, No pin. Everyone is alert. I even told the PD dispatcher it was in the confines of the 44 Pct. This dispatcher must have asked me three or four times my location and if anyone was injured. I gave the information over and over and over... After 25 min. later and about 8 calls to 911 from myself, my partner, injured parties, and bystanders a Metro EMS Bronx Leb. EMS unit showed up. They were great and took the patient away who was still on her cell phone with 1-800-Lawyers. haha 2 NYPD 44 Pct. cars rolled up as the patient was being loaded. I was told the Pct was on shift change and in back log. OK.. I can understand that. We were not a priority job. The professionalism of the PD dispatcher was at best horrible. I think the NYPD needs to do some serious evaluations of the 911 call takers and the radio dispatchers. I monitor NYPD-SOD and they good, very good. Does anyone have horror stories like this? i.e. Boys who died out on the water after calling 911 for help. NYPD you can buy all the modern technology toys you can afford but you need QUALITY people to operate it effectively. I think Monroe College offers ESL English as a second language class. Maybe it can be made part of the NYPD 911 dispatcher training? OK... Now that I got that off my check I feel better.
  16. I have to say I think our Westchester County DES Dispatchers are good, very professional. The same goes for Westchester County Police Dispatchers and PO's on the radio. I think someday down the road things should go to countywide dispatching for fire and ems, maybe even police too. Florida has some amazing E911 systems and countywide dispatching. What do you think? Do you guys monitor smaller Westchester County departments? Police, Fire, EMS. I hear some interesting stuff.. PROFESSIONALISM is key. I think DES and WCPD got it! Legal note.. I DO NOT monitor ANY police frequencies while in my motor vehicle. haha
  17. Can I rent that just for a day? It would be worth it just to see the look on people's faces as you back into the ER bay! haha Any ambulance with a Federal Q has my vote.
  18. Peekskill Police Officer Frankie Alecia was involved in a head-on collision at approx. 0130 HRS on Tuesday, March 2, 2004. Officer Alecia was traveling along North Division Street in Peekskill when his car was hit head on by a van. Officer Alecia managed to radio for help and at that point the two people in the van fled the scene on foot. Police eventually caught up with the driver 17-year-old Obando Lopez. He is charged with leaving the scene of an accident and driving drunk. Meanwhile, police are still looking for the other passenger. Peekskill VAC, Peekskill Fire Dept. E134, E133, Peekskill FD Paramedic 39-M1, Cortlandt Paramedic 35-M2, and numerous PPD Officers were on the scene. PO Alecia had to be extricated from his police car. He was transported to WMC by Stat Flight where he is listed in stable condition. Great job by Police, Fire, and EMS. Frankie is going to be OK.

  23. I must comment here... I don't think it should be an issue of WHO paid for the Arson Dog or WHY. It's a very useful tool in Arson Investigation. It's about time we get some useful equipment in the county for the Fire Service. Yes, that includes a Dog. It's my understanding that YHFD Ex-Chief Eric DiBartolo paid some money out of his own pocket for this Dog. Hats off to Eric! Good luck with "Blaze". Looking forward to meeting the new member of the C & O Team.
  24. Hudson144 Strong words but I must say.... YOU MAKE A GREAT POINT!
