  1. The bottom line is there is absolutely no accountability. There are no oversight boards exclusive of the agencies themselves that mandate a certain level of performance and hold agencies accountable to deliver it.

If the standard is patient contact within 8 minutes of the call 95% of the time (illustrative only - not intended to start a debate on response times) and an agency consistently fails to meet that standard, there should be repercussions. Unfortunately, in our world they keep taxing and spending and buying vehicles or building buildings - for what? They're not doing the job.

One town board actually gets reports from the VFD and VAC at each monthly town board meeting but the reports tell nothing of how well the service is being provided of if it is cost-effective. So the town board really has no idea whether or not the services are being well provided.

I couldn't agree more! Someone should be held accountable if they can't fulfill their duties!

  2. Oneeye, yes we know both sides of the story as it was witnessed by the person who told me as well as many of the firefighters in attendance. Also management and staff of the New Haven location was involved and still refused to let him in. He was wearing the same style jeans as many of the Caucasian firefighters in the establishment. There is a facebook page up now about this, all the information is there.

    What's the FB page?

  3. I know the owners and many employees of their establishments. Has someone tried to contact management and tell them what happened? I know for a fact they will/would not put up with something like this. They have always been pro cop/ff/ems. They hold most of the 10-13 Benefits here in Westchester and almost always the employees give whatever they make to who the benefit is for. We also don't know both sides to the story! Just keep an opened mind until the whole story comes out!

  4. I have actually been trying to enforce this. Usually I sit where I can monitor a traffic light. I have found that when there is a red light, that's when you catch them. The prob is, what section to write.I guess you can write for mobile phone in use while operating a MV. I have been writing no hands on steering device as a good cover. Accident reports now have this as an option as poss cause of accident. With most PD's I think switching over to mobile ticket systems, NYS shld add texting as a seperate section!

  5. When I first read this thread I posted it too my facebook page and I am almost positive it got back to the owner in a rather quick fashion. I happen to know the owner and quite a few bartenders there as well. As a matter of fact, I was there not too long ago and they DTRT if you know what I mean. If you don't like what was said, don't go back there. I am sure they won't miss your business! I am sure we all may have known people that died on 9/11 so grow some thicker skin!

  6. Last week I was asked to assist The FBI and Dept of Labor Agents on the execution of an arrest warrant because they wanted a marked patrol car and uniformed officer. When I got to the briefing in a parking lot, the case agent advised me of the suspect name and picture. I was also advised that we were gonna sit in front of the suspect residence until 0600hrs. So basically 45min sitting IFO this suspects house. I decided that I was gonna place my patrol vehicle in safe but close proximity still having eyes on the residence. While waiting, I decided to look up the subject in our data base. It turned out that he had/has a license to carry a firearm. Did the other Agents know that? I have no idea. There was also some other info I was advised about that I can't/won't go into here. @ 0600hrs, the Agents pulled their 4-5 veh's in the driveway. House was still dark. We walked up an unshoveled walkway to the front door. 2-3 Agents stacked in "the fatal funnel". I was off to the side with eyes in the window. After making contact, the suspect was allowed to stay @ his residence due to medical reasons. While they were interviewing the suspect I got to talking to the other Agents that all seemed to have less than 3 years OTG. Not that it matters, I just thought they could have been more prepared.

  7. Great post Joe! If we don't shoot on our own it's just not gonna happen. Most departments aren't going to pay us or for the extra ammo that we are gonna use unless we are in a specialized detail. I do like that we train with simmunitions. It puts that real life situation in our minds because often we are being ambushed or the sh@t hits the fan in a matter of seconds. When scenario's are over, the critique by the instructors is the most important point. We have a chance to see what we did right and wrong.

I also think we need to review how these warrants/raids are being conducted. We are often going into Houses, Apt, etc... without knowing exactley who or what is in there. I know we try and get as much intel before going in as possible, but it doesn't seem to be helping. The ball is mostly in the bad guys court, and when they have nothing to lose we suffer.

I am by know means a tactics expert, so I could be way off base. I know we like the element of surprise, but when thats gone what do we have? What if the powers to be just waited for these perps to leave their residences and arrest them with the odds in our favor? Just saying. Like I have stated before, it's about us going home at the end of our tours. I am gonna do everything in my power to make that happen for the rest of my career!

  8. We as LEO's need to remember that's it's better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6! I keep hearing/reading officers killed during routine traffic stops. I don't consider any traffic stop routine simply because I have no idea most of the time who is in the vehicle. This country simply needs stricter penalties for 2nd and 3rd time offenders. No more plea bargins. Cop killers face the death penalty upon being found guilty and I mean within 1 month. Allow 1 month for a SPEEDY APPEAL and that's it. We must take back control. I am not saying go out and be rogue, just don't put up with sh#t cause your worried of being sued. Last time I looked you can't get blood from a stone! I am very frustrated cause I bleed BLUE and I want to keep all of our Brothers and Sisters safe!

  9. I have been following these numbers as well. It seems some of these bad guys have nothing to lose and are getting the jump on LEO's. I wonder if it has to do with compliance or training! Just completed 10 and I like to think I am just or more aware of my surrondings when responding and arriving at a call. Some of these were preventable. Please be safe everyone!

  10. Let me see if I can explain how we work it. We need at least 4 PO's on the road and 1 PO or SGT on the desk. Ideally, we would like to have 4 PO's and 1 SGT on the road and another PO on the desk. In the case of somebody on light duty, we could have 3 PO's and 1 SGT on the road with the injured person on the desk. We have 4 main posts that cover the whole town. As manpower goes up, so does coverage. We also try to have a "Selective Enforcement" unit on the road if we can. Of course there are times where Det's or Lt's have to take calls as well. This is all based on the time of year. In the summer, it seems that we always have 4 on the road and a SGT on the desk for all 3 tours! It works for us. Could it be better, hell yeah it could. We are answering more calls and doing more cases and arrests with less PO's.

  11. I was working when that happened and the Patient was transported in the back of a Tahoe. RT 9 was a parking lot at the time of the Aided case. Orginally it was not known that there was an accident. Bystanders were doing CPR when MPPD was called. Medic was dispatched along with an ambulance but there was NO WAY they could get through. I would have done the same thing!! If you wait for an ambulance and the Patient dies everyone will say well why didn't they transport in the police car. Damned if you do and damned if you don't!!! Good Job to my boys at MPPD on getting the Patient there ALIVE!!!

  12. oneeyedmedic - first off i never once said that glens couldnt handle the job according to the post after mine they handled it pretty quickly and kudo's to them .... one thing i probably shoulve mentioned in my last post was different factors to the scene as in if PD wouldnt let them shut down the south bound lanes then then two HEAVIER wreckers or two rotators would be the best for the job ...simply becuase glens smaller truck the red mack doesnt have a heavy enough capacity to lift it from the rear cuase the further you extend that boom the less you can lift etc.

i just simply stated that resource wise stiloski's is the best for the job he has the necessary trucks to handle and the excess equipment to handle the clean-up quickly and efficiently he specializes in it he didnt buy all that equipment to let it sit there and look pretty especially the only fdny rescue he purposely outfitted to be a hazmat truck

I need to play Devils Advocate on here as other people read my posts. Luckily I took off that night, but if Glen asked me to shut both lanes of North and South I would have done it. We have a good working realationship with Stiloski's on other levels. Wish we could add them to the tow rotation.

  13. ** just my two cents as ive been in the towing and recovery world for about 10 years **

i think glens did a great job with the equipment they have....judging by the pictures of their trucks the red mack looks to be the capacity of anywhere from a 15 - 25 ton and the blue and white kenworth is anywhere from a 35 - 50 ton so they had pretty adequate equipment on the job although i wouldve swapped trucks to have the blue and white one up front picking up the weight of the trailer and tractor.

for those on this forum that dont know the area the location of this rollover is in a tight spot ....two lanes no left should and a descent right hand shoulder at that particular location so glens did the best he could and it worked out he had the length away from the rolled unit and the leverage and height adjustment to pick it.

in this type of situation with these recovery trucks i wouldve steered away from an end roll due to load weight and i know from experience these dont run legal all the time, a buddy of mine used to run garbage and he said if his loads were between 25-30 ton it was a light load.

on another note i think the photo's dwcfireman took are great but i wish i couldve seen more of the recovery or more angles of the wreck if it was possible to make a better judgement on the recovery.... as far as safety hands down glens went the best route they shut the highway down for the top reason safety , now everyone on this forum can agree we are all taught we are useless to help someone if we get hurt right ? not only for safety they gave themselves time to prep the recovery right without having to rush and cut corners and possibly have a failure during the recovery. on a lighter note of safety i would hope the IC took into consideration to not have his guys nor the recovery crew root around in the pile of garbage becuase who knows whats in it ....not everyone in this world heads to correct things to throw out in normal trash i.e. sharps , and other biohazard materials and whatnot.

as far as what seth said yea MPPD went by the rotation list for the recovery but i fully agree that stiloski's shouldve been called for the job .....with knowing his equipment and also being a former employee of stiloski's he deffinetly has the resources and the manpower to show with an army of wreckers , dump trucks , and payloaders to recover and clear the scene in a timely manner and im sure that if stiloski's was called all they wouldve needed was the northbound lanes to stay shut down with two rotators prefferably his 85ton and the new 75 ton quad steer i wouldve done an off-set end roll but thats just my 2 cents!!

So would Stiloski's like if another tow agency picked up one of their jobs on the Saw Mill? Glens was very capable as would have been Marks's who also have Heavy Duty Wreckers! I am sure if Glen didn't think he could handle it, he might have made such a suggestion of Stiloski's. He is that type of man!
