  1. As i am involved in both FD & EMS, i would have to agree with everyone else so far and say that the FD is a great resource at an accident scene! Are there times when the FD really doesn't need to be at a MVA, sure there are! But i don't know of many ambulances that carry the equipment that the FDs do, that is neccesarry to stabalize a vehicle. Also, as most of you have said, many firefighters are CFR's or EMT's, so we can assist in patient care, or even just be used to maintain c-spine while the EMS agency does the rest. We have better PPE than most EMS providers, so we can climb in the car and do what we have to without worrying about getting cut. Many times, the FD is on scene before EMS because EMS may have to wait for a crew to arrive before responding. So i feel that if i were in an accident, i'd rather have someone there helping & comforting me, rather than waiting there. As DMA said, you never know what you're gonna find when you roll up, so why not send the FD, it can't hurt and they can always return! If the job is on a major road, if the FD doesn't do anything else, they can be a great asset to shut down a road and utilize the apparatus to block a scene and keep the personnel safe! I always keep in the back of my mind the fact that you can't always trust dispatch info 100%. 60-Control or whoever dispatches you, is usually getting this info from the general public, so their info may not be that correct. They may say it looks minor, but when EMS arrives, they realize they need extrication or there is fluids on the road or a car is on fire or whatever. I'd just much rather roll FD with EMS to be on the safe side, after all, they can always return if they are not needed!
  2. "Firefighters from Croton watch 'Ladder 49'" http://www.thejournalnews.com/newsroom/100...04voicesny.html
  3. My buddy is actually down in Baltimore right now. He knew someone from Baltimore FD and he was able to get tickets to see it at the same theatre where the actors had the preview. I talked to him earlier and he said that the apparatus used in the movie, Ladder 49/Engine 33 were down there and he was able to get pics of them. Hopefully i can get them from him so i can post them.
  4. ***Buchanan Engine Company*** What: Annual Clam Bake When: Sunday, October 10, 2004 Where: Buchanan Engine Company HQ, 3159 Albany Post Rd. Time: 11:00am - 6:00pm Tickets: $40.00 Tickets after 10/03/04 - $55.00 (so get them early to save $$$!) ***Must be 21 years of age to attend!*** Its always a good time, great food and good company, so reserve the date! For tickets and/or further information, please call: Buchanan Firehouse at (914) 737-5010. You can ask to speak to either Bobby Outhouse or Doug Swankie.
  5. yes of course...i didn't see you, or anyone else for that matter, complaining at the inspection lol! Definately alot of seafood in Buchanan this year lol! *Also, results of the 50/50 for the Family of firefighter Chris O'Connor will be announced at the clambake. Tickets for both the Clam Bake & 50/50 will still be available the day of the clam bake. Also note that there were 4,000 50/50 tickets originally printed & i believe there were another 2,000 or so printed, so this will be a big 50/50! Con Edison has been great with selling 50/50 tickets, hence the reason why more had to be printed. They were able to sell 1,000 tickets in 1 day, so thats great news because it will all go to the O'Connor family. Also, this years clam bake is expected to have the largest attendance in years, thanks in part to many of the guys from Con Ed that got onvolved in the 50/50 & also bought clam bake tickets! So if you're not busy that day, come down & spend the $55, it will definately be worth it! Plenty of clams, both raw & steamed, shrimp, steak wedges, sausage & peppers, clam chowder, corn on the cob (depending of availability lol), a roast beef dinner & all the beer & soda you can drink! If you do plan on coming, don't forget to buy a 50/50 ticket or 2 or whatever, because all of the proceeds will go to the family of Chris O'Connor.
  6. Just a question that i've been curious about...Does anyone know why the City of White Plains FD likes commercial chassis so much? I've wondered this for quite some time, but after seeing the new E65, i had to see if anyone knew the reason why they continue to go with these style cab/chassis?
  7. Ah ha, thanks guys! I can see where it makes sense as far as being cheaper & easier on the shops crew. I didn't even take into account that White Plains and the other larger cities have fleet maintenance. I'm sure those guys are used to working on International and Freightliner chassis, hence being easier than working on custom rigs. Our rescue-pumper (2nd due) has an International cab/chassis & i don't care for it much. Its just that the cab is really small and leaves no room for equipment & forget trying to get geared up on the way to a call lol! As i said, its our 2nd due, so many times it may be just a driver & firefighter or officer, so its not such a big deal, but it also happens to be our m/a rig, which kind of stinks. I can't imagine the four-door cabs having much room either, thats why i was curious why WPFD favors them so much. On a good note, we have never had any major issues regarding the chassis, the rest of the rig however,is another story! Thanks for the info/input guys! Mike
  8. Seth, i definately have to agree with mikeinet on this one! You should try to find someone who taped it or whatever you can do to see this! Without a doubt the best episode yet, but unfortunately i missed last weeks, so now i'm behind again lol! I hope they don't off Bosco, hes the best, you gotta love his crappy attitude (normal for NYPD PO's lol) toward everything! I was losing hope last season, the show was getting worse and worse. But after that premiere, it seems like it may be back on track and i may even make sure i start watching it faithfully again! It may be a bit far-fetched, but what kind of show would it be if it weren't over the edge?
  9. Cutty, thats a perfect example lol! I was monitoring the radio while i was at work and heard you guys request directions in from Rt. 129...i felt bad for you guys lol! A Nav system is definately a nice tool especially when your dept does alot of mutual aid for FAST, Tanker or whatever, where you may be traveling quite a distance. Mohegans FAST team goes into Putnam County alot for fires in Put. Valley & Mahopac Falls, thats gotta be interesting! Hell, when we get called into Montrose m/a i sometimes have to think for a minute to figure out where the hell the streets are! The only reason i have the upper hand on that is because i ride with Cortlandt VAC, so i've gotten to know alot of the back-roads lol! Although not a necessity, Navigation systems are not such a bad idea and as Seth said can be a great tool to have, so long as your dept can afford it! Good Luck to Hastings, the rig definately looks great and seems as though it was speced out very well! Congrats!

  11. Damn thats pretty sweet if its true! I wish some of the developers in Buchanan would throw us some cash lol! Hell, Indian Point is in Buchanan, but in Verplancks district, we even got screwed there! Entergy (owner of Idian Point) picked up the tab, or at least a good ammount of it, on Verplancks TL46 (2002 E-One/Bronto Sky-Lift), which i heard cost approximately $850,000! Anyway, good luck to Briarcliff with the whole process of getting the new L40 together and on the road! Their current Seagrave straight-stick is a sweet looking rig, anyone know where thats going? Also glad to hear that Briarcliff is going to create a real Truck with no water & no pump...a true truck company =D> ! Let the engine company worry about all the wet stuff lol! Definately can't wait to see this rig, maybe someone will be able to get some in-production photos!
  12. I give you guys a lot of credit, you read a lot more than i did lol! Not to offend anyone, but this is yet another example of why cops should stick to the cop stuff and firefighters to the fire stuff! Law enforcement & firefighting are 2 totally different beasts, and this guy has no standing to go around blabbing his ideas for what firefighters should be doing! Again, this is not to offend anyone, because i know there alot of members in this network that happen to be both police officers & firefighters. But this guy was a Police Chief, maybe he should be thinking of things for the police to do! I mean come on, graffiti & road hazzard removal, checking on the elderly, thats a bit ridiculous! Lets see, graffiti & road hazzard removal should be done by a highway dept, not the police or fire depts & there are state-run programs that will send nurses to check on the elderly! Two-man engine companies? I wonder what the NFPA would have to say about that? We've had this conversation before and as we all know, there is a lot of down time working as a firefighter, but when they work, they work! When the alarm goes off, these guys litterally but their lives on the line and they do it day in and day out! This guy thinks firefighters are over-paid? He should talk to guys from FDNY or Mt. Vernon or some of the other local depts. This guy was a police Chief out west, i'm sure he made around $150,000 a year or better, and firefighters are over-paid #-o . As i have stated before, it is the police officers, firefighters & teachers that should be paid more, but yet its always the yuppie, pencil pushers that make out the best. Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm and make crazy money to sit in a controlled environment...must be nice! This guy obviously has no clue about firefighting & is way out of context with his ideas!
  13. Date: 09/24/04 Time: 0030HRS Location: Saw Mill River Pkwy SB IAO RT. 120 Frequency: 46.26 Units: Chappaqua Car 2061, R23, E146 & Mt. Kisco Car 2283, R15 & E106(?) Shortly thereafter Stat-Flight was requested to launch. Original landing zone was going to be at Horace Greeley High School. 14. Valhalla & Thornwood responded dual response to this incident, while Pleasantville & North White Plains covered. Units on Scene were: Thornwood E290, TL1, Valhalla E89, TL49 Fire was knocked down very quickly and as soon as mutual aid stand-by companies were toned out, a signal 10-30 was transmitted. All companies were picked-up/returning by approx. 1230HRS.
  15. Photos of Somers Station-9 have been submitted, will be posted soon i hope =D>. This is getting out of hand, we're going to have to re-name the Tri-Village response plan lol. Croton is already an extension to the plan, seeing as how they are 1st due (usually) FASTeam to the Tri-Village, but now Somers, oh man!
  16. I attended this seminar last night and i must say that it was very well put together and very informative. The speaker was a retired Lieutenant from FDNY. He spent 10 years on a Truck, another 10 on an Engine and the remaining 10 or so years of his career were spent in the Marine unit. He definately knew what he was talking about, he was very enthusiastic and could have talked for hours more. I am definately glad that i was free and was able to make this seminar, totally worth-while! I just hope that FASNY will do more local seminars like this one.
  17. Further info... Units were: Croton: Full department response E118, E119, E120, TL44 & R18 Ossining: E98, U51 as original FASTeam assignment, Ossining companies went to work upon arrival. Buchanan: Utility-12, Cars 2554 & 2556, U12 crew went to work, driver operated cascade. Bedford Hills: TL57 as 3rd FASTeam. Briarcliff: E94 re-located to Harmon Firehouse to cover Croton after Montrose stand-by crew responded to structure fire in their district. Westchester County C&O Zone-4: Unit 1404
  18. I hear ya Oswego....i live about a mile away from the plant now, as i have all of my life, it never bothered me before and its not gonna start now lol! I still want to catch this documentary though, just for s***s and giggles. Anyone know if/when it will be re-aired?
  19. Fundraiser for the family of Christopher O'Connor... The Buchanan Engine Company is conducting a 50/50 raffle to raise money for the family of Chris O'Connor. The drawing will be held at our annual clam bake on Sunday, October 10, 2004. Tickets are only $1 each, so it won't kill anyones piggy bank! All proceeds will go to the O'Connor family! As many of you will recall, Chris was a firefighter with the Buchanan Engine Company. Chris, along with another worker, were killed in a man-hole explosion in Yonkers. They were both employed by Con-Edison where Chris was a foreman on the job. Chris leaves behind a wife and 5 young children, so they could use all the help they can get. If you are interested in purchasing a ticket, please contact me via private message on this Network. Also, you may call the firehouse at (914) 737-5010 & ask for President/Ex-Chief Bob Outhouse for tickets. Again, the O'Connor family could really use all the help we can give them, so even if you buy 1 ticket, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all, 2nd Lt. Michael Swankie Buchanan Engine Co.
  20. Hey Seth....what was News12 doing in Rhode Island lol? Just kidding around, but that is pretty messed up! If its true, it sounds like the firefighter over-reacted a tad bit. But we all know how annoying and pushy reporters can be, so who knows. This guy could be totally fabricating the story to make the FD look bad, but maby not, who knows? It was a pretty lame story anyway lol. I mean, i guess theres not much going on there that they had to make a news story about damage to a fire engine and the firehouse. Hell, this kind of crap happens every day, all over the country!
  21. Buchanan Engine Company annual open house What: Annual Open House for Fire Prevention week When: Sunday, October 3, 2004 Where: Buchanan Firehouse, 3159 Albany Post Rd. Time: 1pm - 4pm Activities: Buchanan Firefighters & members of the Cortlandt Ambulance Corps will be on hand conducting demonstrations as well as showing off the equipment we use. There will be plenty for children as well! Children will be shown how to use fire extinguishers & actually get the chance to use one if they wish. There will also be rides on the fire truck for the kids as well as give-aways and door prizes! Its a good time and a great way to teach children about fire safety, not to mention the adults/parents as well! All are invited, so save the date and come on down!
  22. Does anyone know where to find used or refurbished Federal-Q sirens? I would greatly appreciate any information as to where i can find one! My department is too cheap to spend the $$$, but if we can find one at a reasonable price, they may go for it lol! After all, a fire truck isn't a fire truck without a Q!!! Thanks everyone! Mike
  23. Ahh thanks Chris! A few of our guys are going to Milford, i'll have them look, i appreciate it! I didn't even think of Milford lol!
  24. Unfortunately i missed it due to our monthly meeting. I hope they do re-broadcast it though, i need a good laugh lol! I'm really curious to see what these tree-hugging liberals have to say! I'd just like to thank the producers of this documentary for instilling even more fear in the residents of Westchester and the surrounding area lol!
