Croton Fire - 322.
-
Neither jobs or raises should have to be voted on by the brothers, these municipalities can find the money, they just choose not to. Hopefully 2010 is better for all!

From what I read in this article, it is "inappropriate" to spend FD money on fire prevention & safety materials?! Um.....what?!
-
Sadly, this is going to happen over and over again. RIP and God Bless FF Ryan & his family.

I don't think a single shift goes by where someone calls for help and gives us wrong location information. Luckily, between cellular signal triangulation and questioning of the caller, we can generally figure out where the emergency is.

I have a BCT15 scanner. I've never had any issues with it, however my 1 year old nephew kept slapping the buttons and knobs on it two weeks ago, and that's when the problems began. I got everything under control, however, after every transmission it receives, I get a second or two of static, sometimes more. Any thoughts?

I can see the point being made that a lack of personnel doesn't allow a full 360, but I don't feel that it is excusable. If the fire building is enormous, that's one thing, but a normal private dwelling should be given a 360. A Company, or at the least an Officer or experienced FF with a radio should be staged in the rear at all times. I'm reminded of a house fire we had a few years back. The Chief showed up and the PD informed him it was "only an oil burner." We showed up on the first Engine, and based on what we were told we grabbed the "normal" equipment (TIC, Irons, Can) to check it out. As I stepped off the rig, my MPO and I could tell by the smoke it was more then an oil burner, and I ordered a 1 3/4" to the front door. As my crew started making our way in, the windows in the basement blew out and fire started working up the side of the house. The 2nd line went around back and made a good knockdown, while our first line stopped the fire's spread to the first floor. Lesson - if our Chief A. ignored the info from PD and B. checked for himself, he would of known we had a job and not a boiler malfunction. Luckily our mindset is to assume the worst until we confirm something for ourselves. We stopped this fire's spread upstairs (it was a good beating that my crew took) and kept it to mostly smoke damage. Luckily we were on scene swiftly, with sufficient perosnnel, and kept this fire to the basement. Oh yeah, the oil burner room was clean, no fire or smoke damage. Go figure. Thank God we have experiences like these to learn from.

Good post, and good stop! The can is a great tool. If anyone has the chance to use the burn pod at WCFTC, take the can in and you can appreciate how much fire can be KO'd with it. We also carry a can on the Engines, Truck & Rescue, as well as 2 out of 3 cars (no room in the other one). It is one of the items taken in by initial entry teams at every call with the TIC, Gas detector and Irons.

Who will replace him as Chief? Any rumors?

This sucks for the NRFD. Even if you negotiate no raises this year, and they keep the six positions, what guarantee is there next year that something similar won't occur? Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't E24 first due to many high-life/risk facilitiies, including Home Depot and several nursing homes? Doesn't make sense to me to take from any company, let alone one that has so many lives to protect in it's own first due area. Good luck NRFD.

Yes, 60 Control can dispatch and communicate with Somers FD. If I recall correctly speaking to those from Somers that I have, their Asst. Chief had all 911 / phone calls for FD/EMS sent to 60 Control for dispatch. Every dispatch center, even the small town PD's, need to have backup dispatching capabilities off site. It never really dawned on me until the blackout a few years back. Our PD was our dispatch and they lost power, like everyone else, and the generator didn't kick on. We had to man our radio base at the firehouse which was on generator.

I also hope it gets picked up and we see some new episodes. It's one of only two shows I bothered to DVR!

FACT: In some areas of Westchester County, you can get a pizza quicker then an ambulance.

We have an HME/Saulsbury, Seagrave, ALF, Pierce and two Internationals. The ALF had it's share of issues in the beginning, but has been solid since. The Seagrave and the HME/Saulsbury have been solid rigs and rarely are out of service for mechanical issues. Aesthetically speaking, I love old rigs - Old ALFs, Macks, Maxims and Ward LaFrances are images that will stay with me forever as "Real American Fire Trucks." I can't get enough of looking at photos of 60s, 70s and early 80s rigs, especially those in the FDNY. Those Mack CFs & ALFs were the best!

Hopefully the horse pulls through. Good job to all involved.

Most of the fire was K/D when I got there, and the fire that was showing was hidden behind the smoke so the pictures didn't come out so good.
