A lot of the equipment is purchased with grant money. And to be honest, isn't it better that most of it isn't deployed, considering if it is that would mean a disaster has occurred?
Better to be prepared then get caught with their pants down, no?

Cool tool. According to my Haz-Mat Instructor, the state has 3 of them and is looking to add a 4th. Seems like a good addition to the DES resource pool!

You know the consolidation of volunteer departments without the addition of any paid personnel could be a significant improvement over the completely arcane system we have now. Everyone immediately assumes that consolidation implies paid but it doesn't! How about merging 4-5 districts that serve the same town? Or the countless villages that rely heavily on each other and are smaller than a postage stamp.
Imagine a River Towns or Sound Shore or North County Fire District with several former departments under one hierarchy. Economies of scale in purchasing, reduction of apparatus numbers (and the ability to have "spares", something virtually non-existent outside the big cities), higher personnel counts, standard training, administration and operations, to name a few.
A member department with strengths in one area can help one weak in that area and so on. Officers can be vetted from a larger pool of candidates improving the quality, competition, and ultimately performance. Chiefs will oversee a bigger department giving them more experience. Budgets can be consolidated perhaps reducing the overall cost to the taxpayer.
There's a lot to be said for consolidating and it doesn't mean adding ONE paid guy.

Croton FD's Former Tanker 10, a 1990 International/EEI and refurbished by Texron in 2004, was retired in 2012. The chassis, refitted with a Beau-Roc dump body, now serves as a dump truck for the Village Of Croton DPW.

Based on some of these posts, I can't help but wonder if some of you were dropped on your heads as babies. What is even more concerning is how little some people know, armchair quarterback and jump to conclusions.
I have a fairly good amount of training regarding trains and train emergencies. I have - what I believe - is a wealth of knowledge of the fire service, including resources in this county and around us. I also have responded to and run a handful of incidents involving mass-casualties.
I have never - nor has 99.5% of you - had an incident like this. The people running it did a TOP NOTCH JOB, and the fact that some of you are sitting back, typing away and criticizing any decisions of the Incident Commander or any others at this incident just fortifies why I have little faith that we can ever become better as a county. Some of you posting here are officers, past officers or - God help us - aspiring officers in your respective agencies. As the Maitre D' in Ferris Bueller's Day off said, "I weep for the future."

And for the record, this is me, as a person, voicing my opinion which has no reflection of any affiliation I have or have had in the past.

I think your comments are very ignorant and you being an IC yourself should keep to the facts on an incident and if you have any questions or concerns voice them in a professional manor. Monday morning quarterbacks are great. You should be ashamed of yourself, if you think you can come and do our job take the test and get on the list.

Perhaps Res24cuE is being sarcastic? Either way, I don't think it's time for the site to come down. It just needs some life breathed back into it and has to be open for some changes.
