  1. 2004 FF1 was 87 hours, 2007 (Re-write) 91 hours. Both had Awareness (4 hours) and Operations (12 hours). I can't speak to your short change, but you do make the point that this is only BASIC FF training. It is entry level. We risk their lives with little over two weeks of training. That was my point about the continued courses. Also, if you sit in the front right seat of the rig you need 24 hours as found in 1910.120 . 1910.120(q)(6)(v) On scene incident commander. Incident commanders, who will assume control of the incident scene beyond the first responder awareness level, shall receive at least 24 hours of training equal to the first responder operations level and in addition have competency in the following areas and the employer shall so certify: 1910.120(q)(6)(v)(A) Know and be able to implement the employer's incident command system. 1910.120(q)(6)(v)( Know how to implement the employer's emergency response plan. 1910.120(q)(6)(v)© Know and understand the hazards and risks associated with employees working in chemical protective clothing. 1910.120(q)(6)(v)(D) Know how to implement the local emergency response plan. 1910.120(q)(6)(v)(E) Know of the state emergency response plan and of the Federal Regional Response Team. <a name="1910.120(q)(6)(v)(F)">1910.120(q)(6)(v)(F) Know and understand the importance of decontamination procedures. Good thread.....
  2. FF1 has 16 hours of HazMat (Opertions Level). Not taught in 3 hours. Delivered in 4, 4 hour units. It is also delivered as a stand alone. No one was told to teach 16 hours in 3. If you sit for the National FF1 Exam, there is a large portion on HazMat and if you do not score high enough in that section you fail the entire test. Minimum Levels of Instruction are being met and they are being tested. The first skill for the FF1 exam is a HazMat written skill based on the ERG. By no means is this saying that training should not be the same, just that the FF1 is designed around the National Standard. Most Volunteers if they are into it realize this: FF1 -they trained me to get in FFS - they trained me to get out Building Construction Classes - Know my enemy Truck Company - hone my skills FF2 - Develop leadership FAST- Help my brothers and sisters out Fire Officer - Realize that FF1 is about two weeks long and now with a weeks training I am risking their lives This is not a long list, if you are interested, add these hours up and see how close you come to the 229. You might be surprised. And it does not include what the 229 outlines with your own P&P and 15 hours initial and 8 hours in-service. What happened since EF? OSHA (PESH in NY), why, because we were not trained enough and killed ourselves. What happened after that NFPA, why, because we still killed ourselves. We (the fire service as a whole) never policed ourselves. We put that helmet on and the cloak of invincibility protected us on every run....until it didn't. We fell off the back steps, we did not wear packs, we did not pay attention to the changes in building construction nor have a voice in the matter. If you do not train everyday, if we do not learn something everyday, we need to find another line of work. Not for you, for your brother and sister that needs you to be in it, always. Just a thought.
  3. Clint, I love you man, I don't love my tax dollars going for commercials during the Super Bowl (or any other time). Chevy, you used our tax dollars to crack on Ford and they did not get on line for the public dole. I do not agree with these car manufacturers that owe us so much spending our money that they should not have gotten in the first place. Just my two cents (and a whole lot more)........

  8. Tweak of the Post.... What rights do we really have? Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.. Collective Bargoning? The right to bargain against the people we serve? I love what is goining on there, it is exposing all the loons. Keep it up, from the 1340 teachers that were to be laid off and now 1500 due to the 7.5 MILLION DOLLAR CLEAN UP and REPAIR BILL! Any conservative protest, movement, or march leaves behind no mess. It is usually cleaner than it was prior to the assembly. No rounds of ammunition (left at the Captial entrances), no death threats (emailed to them), no protests at their homes or while they are eating in public. They are demonstrating their caliber of person. Keep up the good work! People of consience are watching. Police and Firefighters were held harmless in this. Organizing for America (Obama's group) is bussing in the unemployed to protest. Five dollars and a sandwich and on the buss you go so that it looks like the people who live there are upset. This effects the 10 percent of people who are represented by these unions. They have destroyed a public building, trampled the surroundings and the people who live there are fed up. As for the polls, look at who they sample. Look for the truth yourself. Does this tweak you? Then I have made my point.

  10. Imagine if your efforts were actually focused on the ones that were incharge of the purse strings the last two years. Now that they are on their way out, you expect what? Tax Cuts for the rich? Too bad we do not educate ourselves on what the facts are. If you truly belive that $50,000.00 is rich and that they should pay an extra $3,000.00 a year, then you probably are a couch potato and are in someone's book club. We are fortunate to be able to get decent wages (for now)and where do you think that comes from, donations? The tax rates apply to everyone and the current party in charge takes the deffinition of "Milionare" and defines it as $250,000.00. That is most of small business owners (gross pay). And a real posibility for a Teacher and Police Officer with combined salleries. I am sure that they are willing to pay more. I too rember the chants of "Cops and Firefighters" that the citizens loved at the time. Who is it now that are taking direct hits at those same people? You name the party that leads the major metropolis. They are more concerened with what you eat and drink and wrapping their arms around you to take care of you than to make sure that there are fully trained and staffed emergency responders at your door step in a time of need. They are more concerned with harvesting your organs when you die using an ambulance to take you to the morgue then to the ER. Not only do they want your money when you are alive, now they want to take 35% when you die on money that has been taxed at every transaction instead of leaving it your family. Union supporters? Once all of private industry is finally forced out where are those union members going to work, going to get a paycheck as a government worker when the government has no revenue? Grant money is great, except when after giving time to manage your budgets, you failed once again, they lay you off anyway. I know that real men don't cry, but when you go from janitor to the Speaker of the House (by working for it) instead of living off of you and me for your entire life and handed a golden spoon, I will take the person who remembers where they came from any day of the week. Rant on, it keeps the blood flowing...
  11. The facts are that they had Super Majorities. Those are the facts and they are undisputible. How short our memories are, socialized medicine for all, cash for clunkers, cash for refrigerators, light bulbs, and and don't forget the projects in Chappaqua...touch a nerve yet..
  12. Republicans? Democrat President, Democrat House, Democrat Senate, seams to me that there should be no probem if they really wanted to get this passed (now that they are in a lame duck it is a little late). Anyone remember that it was the Democrats that changed the rules during the last vote in the summer where this would have passed? What are you all worried about anyway? We are all going to have the same health care covrage. The governmet is going to look out for us all. We will all have the same access to medical care so again I ask what is the problem? Why a seperate bill? I enjoy giving half of my salary to the goverment so that they can make my life so much easier. They can decide who is my doctor, what I can eat, what I can drink, where I can live, what I can drive, what temperature my home is, what TV I can buy. They have really made so much things easier for me.
  13. Forget about the rest of the Country, because I live in NY. I would like to say thank you to all the stupid people that live here. I really mean it. You make my life so much easier. Everyday I have less and less decisions to make. We allow our politicians to make intrusive decisions into our lives and again I would like to say thank you for being unable to make decisions for yourself. I don't have to worry what my food is fried in, what my popcorn is cooked in, what I can and can't drink, how much salt is in my food or God forbid to add a little, soon what Doctor I can see, how many calories are in the food I am eating, etc. Except where there is profitability for the government, like taxing tobacco (if it is that bad for your health then ban it not feed the governments habit). Thank God this is not a Fire Department issue, we would have another NFPA standard, OSHA regulation, or V&T law. When we can't look out for ourselves and make good decisions, take some personal responsibility and accountability, we leave it up to elected officials to make the decisions for us. Happy Monday Morning!

  15. With NEW construction and the lack of structural stability...what do you think of this idea... When searching for the fire, or a report of a basement fire, and the possibility of persons in the occupancy.... place a roof ladder on the floor through the front door, capturing at least one full room. With the floor assembly made out of glue, does it make sense to place a roof ladder on the floor? The old roof ladders were a little longer but the ones that are typically carried on apparatus could be utilized inside the box. Want to get a little crazy and if you have a truck company there take an extension ladder, extend it and capture more than one room. This would only be utilized if there was potential for persons in the building to give you a liitle more time. A hoseline would be place in the normal protection of the stairwell and egress for the firefighters, but with the new lightweight construction do you think that this makes sense? Feel free to call Bellvue if you think that I need a reservation...

  17. The facts are that there is a majority party in charge. They did not need the opposition to pass this. The facts are that at the last minute, they changed the votes needed to pass it (218) to (290). 2/3 instead of a simple majority. If they did not change the rules to 2/3 it would have passed. They wanted to add an imigration reform amendment to this one. Are you kidding me? This should be a clean bill. NO amendments. NO tricks. NO last minute changes of the rules because you are scarred for your political career.

  23. § 209-i. Emergency service by volunteer firemen. 1. Whenever a volunteer fireman is within this state, but outside the area regularly served by the fire company or fire department of which he is a member and has knowledge of a fire or other emergency at or near the place where he is for the time being, such volunteer fireman may report to the officer in command of the paid or volunteer fire company or paid or volunteer fire department, or in command of one of the paid or volunteer fire companies or one of the paid or volunteer fire departments, engaged in the handling of any such fire or other emergency and, on an individual basis, offer his services to assist such fire company or fire department. After his services are so accepted, the volunteer fireman shall then be entitled to all powers, rights, privileges and immunities granted by law to volunteer firemen during the time such services are rendered, in the same manner and to the same extent as if he were a volunteer member of the fire company or fire department which he is assisting, including benefits under the volunteer firemen's benefit law. Any such commanding officer shall have power, in his discretion, to so accept the services of a volunteer fireman unless the legislative body of the city or the village, the board of fire commissioners or other governing board of the fire district, or the town board of the town in relation to (a) the fire companies serving territory outside villages and fire districts or ( b ) a town fire department, as the case may be, by resolution heretofore or hereafter adopted, has forbidden the acceptance of any such services pursuant to this section. Any such resolution shall continue in effect until amended or repealed by the adoption of a subsequent resolution. The officer in charge of any fire company or fire department shall be notified promptly of the adoption of any such resolution and of any amendment or repeal thereof. 1-a. A volunteer firefighter who, because of his residence or usual occupation, is regularly in the area served by a volunteer fire company or department of which he is not a member may nevertheless volunteer his services on an on-going basis to the officer in command thereof to assist such fire company or fire department for the purpose of assisting such company or department's general or emergency ambulance services, or for the purpose of assisting such fire company or fire department at a fire or other emergency scene or for the purpose of training with such fire company or fire department. After his services are so accepted, the volunteer firefighter shall then be entitled to all powers, rights, privileges and immunities granted by law to volunteer firefighters during the time such services are rendered, in the same manner and to the same extent as if he were a volunteer member of the fire company or fire department which he is assisting, including benefits under the volunteer firefighters' benefit law. Any such commanding officer when authorized by the legislative body of the city or the village, the board of fire commissioners or other governing board of the fire district, or the town board of the town in relation to (a) the fire companies serving territory outside villages and fire districts or ( b ) a town fire department, as the case may be, shall have power, in his discretion, to so accept the services of a volunteer firefighter. 2. The municipal corporation or fire district which would be liable for the negligence of any volunteer members of the fire company or fire department which has accepted the services of the volunteer fireman pursuant to this section shall be liable for the negligence of such volunteer fireman while acting, after such acceptance and during the time such services were rendered, in the discharge of his duties as a volunteer fireman in the same manner and to the same extent as if he were a volunteer member of the fire company or fire department which he assisted. If the fire company or fire department which has so accepted the services of a volunteer fireman pursuant to this section is a paid fire company or paid fire department, such paid fire company or paid fire department shall, for the purposes of this subdivision and section two hundred five-b of this chapter, be deemed to be a "duly organized volunteer fire company" within the meaning of such section two hundred five-b. 3. As used in this section, the term "volunteer fireman" means a "volunteer fireman" as such term is defined in section three of the volunteer firemen's benefit law; the term "area regularly served" means the home area of the volunteer fireman as described in subdivisions one, two, three, four or five of section thirty of the volunteer firemen's benefit law and, in addition, any other area served pursuant to a contract for fire protection and the terms "fire company" and "fire department" shall include emergency rescue and first aid squads or other squads or units of a fire company or fire department.
