  1. Openings at the VA Hudson Valley FD @ Montrose. Required Certs- FFII (or equivalent) EMT Driver/Operator- Pumper HazMat Tech Announcement # 6-V06-MONT Link to posting on USAJobs: FDVA announcement
  2. Somers purchases a new Command Vehicle every 2 years, when the Chief goes out. The new car is given to the new 2nd Asst, and that Chief keeps the car for 6 years. In relation to replacements cycles and $$- We also purchase a new Ambulance every 2 years, and a new pumper every 2 years, thus the oldest Ambulance is 6 years old at time of disposal and the oldest "front line" pumper is 8 years old, with the Reserve pumper being 10 years old. By the way- for some of you, Chief is spelled CHIEF!
  3. New 80B1 delivered and placed in service.
  4. Mahopac is a fire protection district located in the Town of Carmel, not a Fire District as stated. They are contracted with the Town of Carmel for protection, so I don't think they are technically publically funded, depending upon how you look at other contractors to the Town. I don't know whay they call themselves "commissioners", but they are NOT publically elected. They are elected by the Department only, more along the lines of directors. I also think it will be very hard to save the current firehouse, seeing how the new firehouse is being built right behind the current one. It will kind of restrict the apparatus from responding on calls!
  5. The New 80B1 will be delivered this week. Somers will have 3 RED PL custom Ambulances. The current 80B1, which originally was Ambulance 36 when purchased in 2001, will be converted into a SCUBA RESCUE vehicle and designation will be Rescue 38. It will replace the current Utility 34, disposition of the current U-34 is not known at this time.
  6. The BCFD has been using Jeeps for quite a while as Battalion Chief's vehicles. They were previously using Jeep Cherokee's.
  7. The VA Hudson Valley FD has ordered (2) Ferrara Intruder IIS pumpers 6-man cabs with 10" raised roofs and extended front bumpers 1500 GPM Waterous single stage pumps 1000 Gallon Booster Tanks 5000 kW Generators and (2) 500 watt telescoping FRC lights Front suction and front jump line, (2) crosslays They will be white over red with the gold/white/gold FDNY stripping. They will become the front line engines at the FDR-Montrose Campus and the Castle Point campus. At this time, unknown if the current apparatus will remain as spares.

  9. Hey Capt- Maybe some spell check is needed on your computer too!! Anyway, the seals for these pumpers were done locally and sent to them, they are spelled correctly! I guess E-One doesn't know how to spell VETERAN. The funnier part is that it took 8 years for someone to realize that it was spelled wrong! Anyhow, It will get fixed. As a veteran of 2 wars, I know the sacrifices that are made!
  10. In 2006, Somers will be celebrating it's 75th Anniversary. We were organized in 1931 as the Amawalk-Shenorock Volunteer Fire Department. For you parade buff's, the Parade date will be May 20, 2006. There are several other events planned starting in 2005. Check out www.somersvfd.com for info. We will also be raffleing a Hummer and a Corvette, the night of the parade. PASS THE WORD!!
  11. Ossining Asst Chief contacted me this AM- All set, Ossining FD is in the line-up for Saturday. With this addittion- there are now 38 Departments, Companies and VAC's attending. There will be a Special Treat- Somers VFD will be attending (That's Somers, CT)!!!!!!!!
  12. Both Units will be completed on Friday, May 19th!
  13. Don't Forget- Parade on Saturday, May 20th Any Department, Company or VAC that has NOT recieved a package back with your line-up information, parade route, rules, etc. Contact the SVFD Chief's Office at 914-248-7422. Packages were sent to all who we received replies from. OSSINING FD- Again, we are hearing rumors that you are coming- no reply has been received that you are coming!
  14. I would like to thank all the members from the Somers, Katonah, Golden's Bridge, Croton Falls, Yorktown and Bedford Hills VFD's who assisted in the pack-up on Thursday night, and the Demo today. I have been dealing with this for over 6 weeks now, but due to Federal Law restrictions regarding "Game Shows", it had to be kept a secrect until Wednesday morning when the show arrived. By no means was there an intent to slight any FD or EMS agancy in regards to the last 2 days activities, however they were set up many days prior to the arrival of the show on Wednesday. The 6 FD's that worked extremely hard both last night and today, were the same 6 FD's that were represented in carrying "Jimmy-boy's" casket. At this point, these were the only organized FD events Anyone can volunteer at this point, just go to the intersection of Lake Way and Entrance Way, East- alongside the Lake Purdy's clubhouse, and sign-up. They will put you to work! Thank you again.
  15. We have not receievd a reply from Ossining FD, only Ossining VAC.

  17. Actually the Navy never stopped using this Jack, until 5/31/02, the oldest active commissioned ship in the US Navy was directed to fly the Navy Jack. Pass by my house, I have one flying on my flag pole and it's been there since I returned from activation, and I too will fly it until the GWOT is over! Go NAVY
  18. The 5th USS New York will be an awesome display of the United States Navy's powerful force. When the keel was laid, thousands of Sailors from New York were invited to attend and take part in the ceremonies, I was invited, but unfortunitly was not able ot make the trip. Some of my counterparts went down and spoke about how intense this project is, not only to the shipyard workers, but to the US Navy and the survivors and family of the WTC attack, who were also on hand for the ceremonies. All the steel could not be used, due to damage and the strength that is needed for the hull of the ship. I will make whatever time is needed to be there for the commissioning ceremonies! At the Bronx CPO's Mess we have a statue that was aboard the 4th USS New York (BB-24), ironically that ship's keel was laid down on 9-11-1911, we are considering donating to the Chief's Mess of the new USS New York.
  19. Actually Unit 3173 is not the VA's rig at all, it's Magnolia Springs, Alabama's. Unit 3172 and 3173 will be almost identical. The chasis are Ferrara's Intruder IIS model, but are built by Spartan for Ferrara. Body construction should be starting soon, so they say!!
  20. Somers VFD's 75th Anniversary Parade is Saturday, May 20th, 2006. Step-off is at 1700 hrs (5pm for those who don't use the 24-hr clock) 95 Departmants, Companies and VAC's invited, so far only 45 have replied. 30 attending! Parade route will be along Route 116 (Purdys Rd) to Route 202/100 (Somerstown Turnpike) past the Elephant Hotel, and continue down Route 202 (Somers Rd) past the Somers (Hamlet) Fire House and reviewing stand, and end at the Somers Middle School. Carnival will be set-up at the Peter J. Babich Memorial Fireman's Field across from Warren St on Route 202. Collectables will be available for purchase. The Raffle for the 2006 Hummer H3 will go off the same night. Tickets are available for $100.00 each (only 1000 tickets). The Hummer is currently in front of Somers Fire Headquarters in Lincolndale- drive by and take a look. Ask any Somers Member about tickets.
  21. The Old "Quack Attack" (minus the skid package) is the current Utility 5.
  22. I'm not from West Somers (I mean Yorktown), but yes the old L-51 is going to remain in Service as L-68. Somers will hopefully be returning to a mid-mount stick in 2007-8.
  23. I'm still trying to figure out how Engine 139 is still designated an Engine? If the current vehicle has only a 400 GPM pump and the new one will only have a 500 GPM pump, according to NFPA and the WC desigation definitions, then it should be a Mini-Attack not an Engine!
  24. Read the 1st post- May 20, 2006 We have already received 20 replies from Companies attending! For those of you that have not sent in replies- get 'em in- placement is based on the postmark of your reply, and there were 95 invitations sent out!
