  1. .........I work in EMS, I can't AFFORD to go to a Yankee game anymore.
  2. I must agree with you. It is difficult making a decent living on an EMT / Paramedic salary. I'm a retired Police Sergeant and EMS has always been my second job. It could never have been the other way around. Per diem Paramedics at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan are making $28.50 / hour. Full timers are making $30+ / hour depending on the amount of years in the service.
  3. HEY! I've got a novel idea.....how about promoting based upon MERIT instead of skin color or gender? Hmmmm.....
  4. Smoking in the bus, tailgating the fire truck, blowing thru stop signs & red lights. Not a sign of aseasoned professional. Lets say the fire truck stopped abruptly.....the ambulance would have been now a part of the hose bed. Setting aside weather you like or dislike Fox News, the smoking driver gave them a reason to hurt EMS as a profession. Another black eye and another setback for the EMS profession.
  5. Makes perfect sense to me...
  6. So what if Fire arrives on the scene first and trys to cancel EMS? Should EMS then say "Fire can't cancel EMS, lets continue in" even if we're not needed. After all, were a private ambulance.....we're not gonna' let a municipal fd cancel us!
  7. OK, lets say EMS arrives on a scene, cancels the responding FD, the responding FD still continues in and in the meanwhile, a structure fire comes in and now the apparatus is stuck on an EMS job where they are not needed. If its my house on fire, I would be pretty pissed if the fire appartus was tied up on an EMS job (where they are not needed) and out of the response area for a real fire. Lets all call a duck a duck.... Its all about sending FD on more runs to pad the stats.
  8. Maybe it would be best if the fire department fought fires instead of justifying their jobs by going on EMS runs where they are not needed.
  9. So because you are a municipal fire department responding on a medical emergency and the city contracted private ambulance medics (who are an agent of the city - under contract - deemed to be responsible) and have a higher level of medical training, can not be trusted to make a decesion to cancel FD when they are not needed? This sounds like politics as usual. Gotta' justify your job by responding on jobs where you're clearly not needed. What about if you get into an accident while enroute to a job where you are cancelled? Sounds like you are leaving yourself out there for a lawsuit.
  10. Why is this a waste of "thier breath and my air time"? What is wrong with cancelling resources that are not needed and who said that this was your air time? Do you exclusively own the air? A pretty arrogent statement.
  11. Dumber then a box of rocks.
  12. How about dispatching EMS first and then when EMS arrives on the scene, if additional resources are needed they can call for them (for example, for the ankle sprain...no need for additional resources. For a more serious emergency, then call for what you need). Now granted, If someone calls in a cardiac arrest 1/2 a block away from a firehouse, then send out fire right away. Basic good common sense.
  13. I've never been a big fan of flycars. There is one local agency in my area that has 4 BLS fly cars and 2 ambulances. This doesn't make much sense to me. I'd rather see additional ambulances and get rid of the fly cars & motorcycles. I can see a need for specialty vehicles where an ambulance can not get thru such as a Gator for off road or a rescue boat.
  14. Motorcycle EMS? Kinda' impractical. Can't transport any patients, Can't carry much equipment, might as well just buy another real ambulance rather then waste money on a vehicle that can't transport any patients or very much equipment.
  15. Any particular reason for the red star of life?
  16. I like the box trucks too. Much more room to work. What's up with the red star of life?
  17. If you're up on the 12th floor, what good are the narcs if they are locked up inside of the ambulance?
  18. Great video. I've worked EMS in NY City for many years. From 1980-1985 I worked in the Bronx for the NYC-EMS and since then have worked in Manhattan for the private hospital 911 EMS. I would recommend any new EMT's or Paramedics that are looking for lots of experience and call volume to work in NYC. I'm pretty sure that FDNY-EMS has a 25 year retirement, decent benefits and pay too. The private hospital 911 EMS pay & benefits are good too.
  19. Sorry but I strongly disagree with you. First of all, risking the life of a child by leaving a live wire near a child's play area shows that as a fireman he is incompetant. He could have burned down the house or electrocuted a child. So adding on a reckless endangerment charge should be considered. His personal vehicle has a red roof light bar and decals on the window indicating he is a fireman so he is most definately using his fireman status to gain business.
  20. The worst thing is that he's a volunteer chief and leaves a live wire near a child's play area. Some Fire Chief! Creates a fire hazard risking chldren's lives. Neil Bodie should be jailed for contempt of court and have a judgement against all of his possessions.
  21. We still pay the price either thru tax dollars, insurance revenue recovery or donations so that money used to purchase vehicles or gear should not be used for people's personal use. It should be used strictly for EMS or Fire use.
  22. Yes, people are entitled to eat during your 8, 12 or 24 hour shift so getting a meal is considered acceptable. Driving to a Yankee game, and being completely unavailable for an EMS or Fire emergency, is an abuse of taxpayer money.
  23. Apparantly the purpose is so transportation to Yankee games, the grocery store and general personal use can be provided.
  24. Just to let you know, the subject in question was NOT an "employee" he was a volunteer. I do not believe there is a "hiring process" for volunteers. Changes should be considered.
