  1. The day's not over. It should be a little later the zombies come out and play.
  2. It happens. On more than one occasion I've seen "homeless" individuals panhandling on 42nd St around Grand Central Terminal and when their shift if over go into the bathroom, get changed, and take a train to where ever.
  3. Just sell it to Metro North. Even in it's current condition it will likely run better than the BL20's on a good day.
  4. Unfortunately there hasn't been an open house for at least three or four years now. NHFD, what part of the old shop is coming down?
  5. Don't laugh, years ago when the "ambulances" were "rescues", there were SCBAs on each of them.
  6. HA HA MICE is kind of out dated. There's a newer acromin "4H MEDIC ANNA". A few things to ad to the OP: 1. If you have to go into a structure with a flamible gas leak and you're going to use hand lights, turn them on BEFORE entering the structure. If you turn them on while in the structure you may have just created an ignition source. 2. As stated the LEL (lower explosive limit) of propane is 2.2% (ok, 2.19). The UEL (upper explosive limit) 9.5% If you get a reading above 9.5% does that mean it can't ignite? At that moment, no it can't as the fuel mixure will be too rich. Once you start ventalating is when you have to be carefull. Once the gas starts to disipate it the ratio will drop with in explosive limits and then there's the potential of getting ugly. 3. in the event of a flamible gas fire, don't try to put it out with out the gas being secured first. If there is a gas leak and it's burning it's mildly safer than extinguishing the fire and now just having a gas leak. If it's a tank leaking and you can't turn off the gas, just cool off the tank with the hose stream to prevent any chance of BLEVE. 4. If you get to a report of a gas odor and the occupant says "I've been smelling the gas for the last week but have been too busy to call", just smack him a few times for me. This really irritated me when it happened in the middle of the night.
  7. It is common for power companies to have mutual aid help during a wide spread outage. There were numerous power companies from other states and utilities contractors in Dutchess also. It's a shame it takes a predicted major storm, and governor's intervention to get the linemen (and rest of the force) back to work. Now maybe the company will realize who needs who more.
  8. Not to mention the epic "Child In Time". As far as Deep Purple and the Rock and Roll Hall of Shame...... It's more important for the likes of Run DMC, Madonna and Grand Master Flash in there.
  9. I can see this having potential shortfalls (scams). If I get on a train from any given station and the conductor doesn't get me until the next fare zone, then I can punch up a cheaper ticket.
  10. That link does not work. Try this one: https://erecruit.mtabsc.info/psc/ERPRD/EMPLOYEE/HRMS/c/HRS_HRAM.HRS_CE.GBL?&PAGE=HRS_CE_HM_PRE Then check the MTA Police Officer box and hit search.
  11. None of the foreign railroads were scheduled to have them there and MNR only has two in which I don't think even run.
  12. I'm going to start off by saying that I'm not trying to justify anything that Metro North, or CDOT is doing but just my 2 cents. Yes, I agree with you about the numerous passenger stations on the New Haven Line but it's justified to a point as the New Haven Line is the busiest single line railroad in the country! To reflect the added stations adding trains would be nice but I don't know how much more traffic the line can handle. I really don't consider State Street a reagular stop as Metro North only has a relative few trains that stop there. I consider it more of an SLE stop than anything. Yeah, CDOT decided to raise the Conneticut fares at the beginging of the year. Unfortunately it was a long time coming. The NY side of the operation has had it's fares rasied 3 times since the previous CT increase. CT legislation said they would not increase fares until there were M8's in service. Now there are M8's in service. Additionally CT originally wanted to raise the fares higher than they did but chose not to at the last minute. The older equiptment may be more of a comfortable ride (I personally don't know) but they are VERY problematic! A/C problems, water leaks when it rains, etc. In fact of the M2, 4, and 6's, the M2's hold up better than the later models. Another problem is when there is a defective car, to only lose 1 addtional car with the 2's as they are pairs. When one single car of an M4 or M6, you loose 2 addtional cars as they are all triplets.
  13. This is going on in GCT this year because of station repairs from last summers earth quate at Union Station in Washington DC. The M8's are nice, hopefully I will never have the displeasure of having to work on them. Not that I don't like the equiptment but the fact of the New Haven Line is the least desirable of the three to run on. It will be interesting seeing these moves in and out GCT. It will certainly keep the switching crews busy for a few days.
  14. It was the tanker based in Stamford that went to the fire in Milford. When requested it will likely take a while to get out of the house. While it usually stands on a track ready and waiting, at a minimum, the yard master will have to instruct a switching crew to couple up to it and go. If the switching crew is in the middle of a yard move, they will have to finish up with what they are doing. I am not 100% sure if it was the switching crew that took it up there.
  15. Thanks, I stand corrected. FYI even though there is an MTA PD office in White Plains Train Station, they do not get stationed there. For the six or so months I worked in that station you'd see them come in and out they are not stationed there. The only regularly staffed MTA police station along the Harlem Line is in Mount Vernon , directly across the street from the Mount Vernon West train station. At one time I was doing some work at Pleasantville station and required police assistance, they responded from Croton. Once you get up towards Brewster, they'll come from Beacon.
  16. New York City Transit, specifically subways will only allow PD ride when on duty. I have seen station agents deny off duty PD entry around the turnstil. Even though MNR and LIRR are semi "autonomous" there are totally indepentant operations from one another. LIRR employees are not officially allowed to ride on MNR and vice versa. For an offical statement I recommend calling Metro Norths Customer Service dept and ask the question. From an unoffical capacity, no one is supposed to ride for free on the trains, but as previously stated, some conductors will let you go. The other side of the coin is some conductors will not as they don't want to risk getting caught by a spotter and getting a little unpaid vacation.
  17. It's true. From the Empire BC/BS website:
  18. Ah, I got enough for less than 3 gallons.
  19. Dang, I forgot all about that. I'll have to keep an eye out for it. Honestly, I don't even remember what the full amount was. Edit: I also got the check today. It's almost laughable for the amount of my "pro rata share".
  20. Who's to say the commissioners in any given fire district will have the knowledge to properly devise and execute a budget? After all, there are no educational requirements for anyone to run for commissioner.
  21. Those trains aren't called vomit comets for nothing! At least the regular weekday commuters will get a pass this year as it falls on a Saturday.
  22. And if you decide to take mass transit (specifically Metro North) please try to behave yourselves as there will be enough amateurs on the trains! St Patty's Day is the one day of the year that I absolutely HATE going to work.
  23. You can not be an officer and chauffeur at the same time. When you arrive on the scene how are you going to do a proper size up when you can't leave the engine? How are you going to make command decisions when you have to worry about operating the pump? In these circumstances you may be an officer in title, you shouldn't be one in practice. Let throw this scenario out there. The chief of the department is the chauffeur with 4 firefighters on board. None of the firefighters are qualified to operate the engine. Who should be in command? I'll give you a hint: Not the chief! Here's another one: The chief is riding in the officers seat en route to a fire. This vehicle is still nothing more that Engine 123. Upon arrival the chief has to decide whether or not he is officer of the crew and be in command as Engine 123 or break away from the engine and become the IC and leave someone else in charge of the crew. The fire service isn't like the White House that any plane the president boards automatically becomes Air Force One.
  24. I wouldn't put it that they are "getting away" with anything. As long as the permissive referendum was in place, the law was followed. If those who are against the fire house (NIMBY's) don't like it, it is them that should have been attending the board meetings, or at least read the minutes of said meetings. After the bond referendums were defeated it was made clear that the funds would be saved to follow through with the project.
  25. In order for a fire district to spend money from a reserve fund for a big ticket item (fire house, apparatus, etc.), the commissions must form a resolution (vote) in order to do so. After the vote, a permissive referendum must be advertised in the districts designated newspaper (in the legal ads). Here is an example of a permissive referendum taken from the Brentwood, Long Island Fire District website: Once the permissive referendum is advertised any objectors can submit a request for referendum by petition where a vote would then take place once the proper amount of signatures are presented. Should there be no objectors with in the time frame, then the permissive referendum passes where the district can then start the biding process where yet another advertisement must be place in the legal ads for the acceptance of bids.
