  1. There are usually six stations that the individual firefighter must pass. They range from donning full ppe includingh air pack in with in a time frame to ladder work to ropes and knots, usually some kind of hose stretchng, and a host of other tasks that the proctor can choose from. then theres a 100 question test.

    Hope that this helps

  2. I guess we have to go over this one more time---risk a lot ---to save a lot. Incident commanders must have the knowledge/skills and ability to make split second decisions, wether your in Texas--New York or Alasks, its the same. Read the NIOSH report from this event and you will get an eyeopening.

Be safe brothers lets make sure our fire service leaders have the necessary tools to preform. This is a serious job, firefighters die.

How many departments have a bigger parade/convention budget then training budget?? more money invested in uniforms then turn out gear. All the bells and whistles and gagdets on 900k apparatus but not enough air packs.

sorry for sounding off but this death like many every year was preventable.

  3. Better question is when does the clock start?? when 911 is called? when FD is notified? when page goes out? When apparatus respond?? Asking the Dispatchers on here---how long can it take from reciept of call till department is notified? then how long befor an apparatus logs on as responding ,not chiefs car,but a supression vehicle?. Lets not kid our selves it take a litle while from reciept of alarm at any fire station before the apparatus get on the road. Getting everyone to the map, Checking the address, making sure you know where the hydrants are, best route, getting dressed, all take a little time.

  4. All right you young whippersnappers :D everything you guys have said is true long coats/3/4 boots but heres one thing I learned on when I joined the fire service--Nov 1966 thats right 1966. Pocantico hook and ladder Company #1 North Tarrytown Fire Department.

We had MSA filter masks 6 per company and only one SCBA per apparatus. You guys going to do your home work on MSA filter masks . They had tape on the bottom and a color monitor built in, when the colors matched you changed the filter. they looked like WW1 gas masks. No such thing as positive pressuer masks--you had to suck the air in through the filter.

thank goodness with in 2 or 3 years all of the filter masks were replaced by SCBA.

  5. Barry your right on the options in Greenburgh. Edgemont area ie Greenville Fire district bothe "meets and bounds" are the same, would much rather make their own and not be part of the Town of Greenburgh for a few reasons.

1- it is generally felt in the Edgemiont area(scarsdale mailing) same physical area, that they cannot get anyone elected to the Town Board because of population--lowest in the Town

2- the Whole Town of Greenburgh votes for the supervisior and Board including all the incorporated towns and villiages

    ie elmsford,tarrytown irvington ect.

3- heres the kicker the Edgemont/Scarsdale does not repete does not want to consolidate with the School district in the Town of Greenburgh.! if they were a town and were forced to consolidate school dictrict THEN they could incorporate in to Scarsdale Schools.

And i do not see a big out cry from Eastchester to consolidate the three police departments ??

if consolidation comes it wont be pretty westchester is not prepared.

  6. Yogi did say that just like this topic hashed---rehashed--and re re hashed how many times can you kill the same horse. There not a fire commissioner out there that is going to say "hey lets consolidate and I do not want to be a Commissioner any more"

So I guess my opinion is pretty clear not happening in Greenburgh not happening in Mt Pleasent not happening in Long Island at least not with out a taxpayer revolt.

Was it Yogi that said if it aint broke dont fix it??

  7. Stepjam being slightly left of center--between us we even out. Thats what makes America great, it is when we allow the extream from either side to make decisions that gets us into trouble.

Union workers from all types of unions bases their endorsments on what they precieve as best fot the whole(acting globely) most of us make our desision on whats best for us (acting localy). Before any union endorsment is taken on any level the pulse of the membership should be taken. Larger unions IAFF for example may endorse a certain canadate soley based on how they have already voted based on labor issues. You as a individual may cast your vote on how the canadate stands on other issues, that are important to you.. education issues..healthe care..womans rights, ect.

Again thats what makes America so great, but for this State to take away bargaining rights in unconsciencenable.

  8. I had in my lecture just last night--Intro to Fire officer- a segment about being held to a higher standard. Guys thats just the way people see us, they see the shirt-the hats- the uniform- the fire car--the apparatus. We are in position of trust. We go into peoples homes when they might not be there. Our EMS handles children and the elderly. We have to be carefull. Every day someone is watching us and some of them dont like us. I know its hard to believe but it is true.

  9. Just remember in November that it was these Republicans also wanted not to help our firefighters and police and other workers with the 911 bill. We arwe not the bad guys here, Workers have rights. You can be a democrate or be a rebublican or even a tea party just remember your Americians first and its not the American workers fault that the economey is in the shape its in.
