  1. this sounds good does anyone know how to get it? and has anyone trained with VIPER yet?
  2. I had a Garrity light with the rubber band and some nice door chocks. But they were lost in a fire when it started to roll over my head back in late March. Now i have two 4 AA LED streamlights on my helmet with the holders. One on each side, its great but everyone thinks I look like a light tower but I don't really care. They work great and I haven't lost them yet. I know some other guys are getting them now because they like mine soo much.
  3. WOW you guys are allowed to do alot to your houses. I've tried to get something going at mine but just face alot of oposition and told not to go there. Not too sure why I think it would look nice with some simple stuff. Have you guys faced this problem? What did you do to get around it or go through it? I know there is alot of politics that are stopping me.
  4. I know I couldn't have said it any better.
  5. I was just wonder what some other departments have for standards to become a driver?
  6. I have never tried this but I am sure it can work if you want to add some credits to you degree. One of my friends did it though, but he really never told me if it worked or not. For a fee SUNY Empire State College will give you credit for an EMT class, Fire fighter one and two and some other fire classes too. You would have to check with them though its part of the SUNY system. I know almost every community college offers an EMT class for credit but its different from a normal EMT class. Midterm paper, final thesis paper and some other little twist in it too. Not too easy A for the 6-8 credits depending on the school.
  7. Its a good article but they seem to look at response times alot. Maybe they should have talked about the traffic in Long Island too. How Volunteers out there have the hardest time getting through it to the firehouse during the day. No one yelleds for them. I have some friends out there, it can take them 2 minutes to get to the firehouse after about 8pm but mid day almost 10 minutes to go the same distance?? I know that is one of the problems, they want volunteers to respond but what happens when your in traffic and the blue light just doen't help. I wonder if this could affect the times? any ideas about it?
  8. My department has it so we can stop traffic when we are pulling out of the firehouse and on to RTE 22. All our apparatus have the high intense strobe. Only problem I have seen with it is that on our trucks some people forget to turn it on or to turn it off when coming up to that one intersection. It will just take time for use to get use to the new switch. Otherwise I think it works great at stoping traffic, wish all the lights had them at least on RTE 22.
  9. well to be a member in the department for a fire fighter you must have basic and intermidate fire fighter and CPR For the Rescue Company (ambulances) you have to have EMT-B and CPR Thats about it for requirements that are made by the board of fire commisioners in my department. Having both Fire and EMS in one house run by one department it would be nice to see more training for the chief maybe in CFR or first-aid and O2 admin.
  10. We still have our Maxim in service as engine 287 rigged for a water supply with 5" hose and a two stage pump. I am not too sure on the year but I think its a 1978? I know the rear of the truck had a referb a while back.
  11. Just wondering is this a SUNY school. Because SUNY Stony Brook and also SUNY Cortland have Vol EMS on campus and so does Fordam too If its a SUNY its going to be a battle to get it done but you might want to talk to them Stony Brook runs 2 buses and so does Fordam but Cortland has some kinda of 1st response thing going no ambulance but a BLS fly car i think. The National Collegate can help somewhat but look around and see how other got it done especailly if its a state school. I know the parents were a big roll at my school. Heck they gave us an ambulance.
  12. Hi I use to be the chief of the ambulance at my school. Most of our funding came from a parents association the school had and schools also alot money for clubs. Its a mandatory thing through out the state to have money for school clubs. Make the ems squad a club in the schools eyes so you can get some money from them. But be aware soon once you get an ambulance on the road they school will start to look at liability of it. Name and stuff. They killed my rescue squad because of it and it also pist off the parents because they loved us but the school really didn't care. Good luck I hope this helped
  13. I like seeing classes for camp smith but can you please keep updating it because my department rarely posts these classes and I would love to take one but I need more then a month notice to change my schedule to take the class. Thanks for posting the classes its nice to see what they have to offer
  14. Does anyone know why we stopped doing the musterss??? I know they are before my time but I have seen nothing but pictures of the old ones and what happened? Also does anyone know who use to run them? I know there is alot of work that has to be done just to hold an anniversy parade. How many people would actaully want to help with this? I think it would be great for the county to see all the different departments.
  15. well it is a Liquified gas tank. It can either be for propane (LPG) or many of the new gasses that are being used in the industy today. LPG, NPG, LPN.... the list goes on and on. But this tank is a sationary tank because of its size. It also in not a tank that is in cyrogentics either so it is a high pressure tank. Because the wall are not think and there are not numerous layers. So it can house a different liquid gasses. Liquified gasses is becoming more and more popular in the energy industry especially over seas in Hong Kong and Japan. This is because of the expantion ratio of about 500:1 almost depending on the amount of methane in the gas itself. We will be seeing more of these tanks in the US soon so get ready. I can tell you that on the high seas there are more ships being launched into operations. These ships have life spans of more then 30 years. Hey if you want more info on tanks let me know i am taking a really intresting class at school on Liquified gas cargo ops.
  16. Hi kid Don't get too upset but you have to learn to crawl before you can start runing. Usually in paid 911 jobs as an EMT you have to prove yourself on the transport side 1st or go throw the academy for the city. Doing 911 is fun transports to suck most of the time but you can learn some stuff on the transport side. When i started as an EMT it (is) was 911 volly work. Every call we had a medic, even for trauma jobs and simple BS to the hospital. When i started working for a transport ambulance service I started to learn alot. Granted most of my work was on the weekend with me and a medic on a bus. But now I feel much more confident as an EMT with medicals and what to expect if I call a medic and what they can actually do. Now most of the medic like it when I ride on my volly bus because I cancel them because its BLS. Good luck finding a 911 job with little to no transport time. If you do find one let me know I would love to work there.
  17. I have just checked out firehouse.com response to the Presidents address on hurricane Rita and the war on terrorism. I have never truely heard of a National Mutual Aid Box alarm. But with a hurricane bearing down on an area of the Gulf of Mexico that was just previously hit hard just a few weeks ago. I know in the past (September 11th) several departments that are not in the NYC regional response to the Mutual Box 5-5-5-5-5 sent in crews and truck. Does anyone really know if they were actual dispatch though the state or maybe the Federal Goverment on a National level. I am not saying they weren't a big help, they deffenitly were at the time. But to me there seemed no real organization to the whole ordeal. Just wait at the stadium or wait at the training center. I understand the purpose of stagging to have equipement ready to go in. But when other crew just fly by with out orders or direction and just go into a scene doesn't that just add to the disorder??? We should have learned from numerous other events by now. Hurricane Andrew, and several other large Hurricanes' that have caused wide spread damage. Did we have a National Mutual Aid Alarm then??? What happened to FEMA(Federal Emergency Mangement Agency) in all of this??? Aren't they the ones to be in charge when there is a disaster??? Shouldn't they be similar to our battalion cars in westchester. You just ask for something and they get it and know where to pull it from. I don't know truely I am just wondering. But I do know my prayers are with those that are about to go through this storm and the ones that will have to deal with the aftermath of this storm. Good luck to everyone I hope it will not be as bad as they fear. Site on National Mutual Aid: http://www.mabas.org/ http://www.firemutualaid.com/ http://www.gmag.org/
  18. I think it would be a great thing if VACs did some rescue work but there would be butting of heads once fire is on the scene. Myself, being in one of few departments that is both EMS and Fire I have seen The buting of heads in each others business. Espically when it comes to the ambulance. Since some members refuse to know the basic or a little more about EMS with out becoming an EMT, they feel at times they know what is best for the patient. Because they have driven the ambulance before on a similar type of call. I am not knocking down anyone either fire or ems but there must be some level of cross training in-bewteen the two. Especially know after terrorist attacks. We all must know what each others job is and how to get it done to a certain level. It is just infortnate to say that egos and personal opions will get in the way of such and idea. The only people that would lose out on this would be the general public. When something big happens again. It would be a great additional resource to have in case of something happend. It can be a back up or just something that runs along with fire to rescue calls. I know a few VAC/Squads in New Jersey that have these and they have been doing it for so long that they get along.
  19. I seem to also be having a mental block. I am on one of the few combined departments of Fire and EMS. One day a long long time ago at a drill for the trailer at the airport I heard there will be several other trailers similar to the one at the airport placed in VAC in the North part of the county????? I know we have all trained on the decon trailers but have the VACs seen us set them up and what the procedures are?? God forbid we ever have to use them and there are some minor injuries going through decon that need transport or care to a hospital. The idea of a ems taks force is a good idea but I don't think the need is there on a daily basis for one. Unless there is a big MCI or something. What level of medical traininng would this said person(s) have anyway. Doctor, PA, Medic, EMT, CFR?? Just a thought because I know you can not really take Charge of Patient Care unless you have the highest training and equipment to provided care.
  20. Well its about time the new firehouse in Armonk is open and has been in serivce for a while now. We still have some bugs to work out of her just like any new piece of equipment. I heard rummors of a wet down or open house day around the fire house but no date is truly set though. What i do know is that we are going to be having a big bash for out 75th aniniveristy next year in 2005. This picture is the south side of the building. The bay door open up on the side of the building. There are 14 bays on the floor. 8 on one side and 6 on the other. Its a big difference from the old firehouse that had 4 bay door with are trucks going 2 to 3 deep behind one door. Now each truck has its own door. Well this is also the new website we have thanks to the boyscot troop in our town. http://www.armonkfd.org/ (alt+p)
