In the last few hours of this year I want to take a moment to remember the 162 Police Officers that gave their lives in the line of duty this year. These brave and selfless men and women are my heroes and at Midnight tonight when we welcome the new year, these officers and their families will be in the forefront of my mind. We received a post- arrest the other night in the local ER. She (a dialysis pt who missed her rx due to the winter storm) called 911 saying she couldn't breathe and "was probably having a heart attack." 2 minutes later PD broke down her door and found her asystolic-- started CPR. 2 more minutes later ALS arrived and loaded a few rounds of Epi and Atropine into her. Got a pulse. Gave 1 more of Epi and 1 more of Atropine. Scrambled her to me in the local ER with a pulse of 40 (mostly ectopic, med-based beats). We immediatley began the hypothermia protocol (AKA Code Cool).
Fast forward: 2 days.
She was warmed back up in our ICU from 93 degrees to 98 degrees and was extubated the day after. 2 days later she was extubated and asked ME, the one who received her and wrote her off as non-viable, ""What the Hell was I thinking bothering you people with my medical problems??? I'm so sorry I bothered you all!"
WE broke her ribs, tore her lip tubing her, and jammed lines and tubes all over the place in her tiny body, and she's apologizing to ME. This is why I do this. Beyond words. Seriously. There's so rarely a save post-arrest, and if the person survives, he/she rarely comes out of it as much more than a plant on a window sill. And she thanked ME.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, all. NEVER forget why you do what you do and NEVER assume your efforts are fruitless. This woman was proof to me to always the assume the outcome is going to be a GOOD ONE.

The most important thing is that these 2 Law Enforcement Officers are never forgotten. I was working the night Trooper Ambrose was killed and was called to the area to assist as were most Yonkers units that night. There isn't a time that I pass that area that I don't think about that night. Although we will be forever saddened by their line of duty deaths, we can all be comforted in knowing that because of the sacrafice that these officers made and by the enactment of this law, these officers will be responsible for saving countless lives over the coming years.
Thank You Trooper Ambrose and Deputy Searles for your courage, honor and sacrafice. You gentlemen are true heros. You are gone but will never be forgotten.

The rhetoric that is coming out from the lawyers and this guys family is ridiculous. The DA says that bonita zelman who is the attorney for the other players who were arrested that night called the lead detectives and said that unless the charges against her clients were dropped they wouldn't speak to investigators about the shooting. Zelman now denies this but i firmly believe this happened and the reason i believe this is that she is a low ball lawyer who saw dollar signs at the outset of this thing and figured that she could get her mug in front of the cameras and shame the DA's office into dropping the charges which isn't going to happen so now she is in way over her head and she is panicing and trying to make threats to get her clients out of trouble. If it can be proven that she made this statement then that is a matter for the NYS bar association to deal with as a possible misconduct issue.
The next topic is henry sr. who was on news 12 saying that the charges against the other players should be dropped because they were only trying to help his son ..... help his son how by breaking the window of a store ?? I don't remember ever reading about breaking a window out of anger as being a recognized part of first aid. The rest of the people were arrested for dis con/resisting, and I ask again, how was that trying to help dj henry. After the shooting dj henry was a prisoner of the police on scene which means that nobody should have been going near him except PD/EMS/FD.

As for these so called " minority law enforcement groups" who are so concerned with this case, the majority of them are corrections officers who have no clue what it's like to be a street cop. They should be embarassed to have held that press conference and said the anti cop things that they said. It's funny how they come out of the wood work when a cop shoots someone but when gang members are killing each other and people are getting robbed, beaten, raped, burglarized and shot each and every day, they say nothing. My thoughts and prayers are with my brothers and sisters in Newark who have been layed off. I would say that anyone who is not directly involved in the negotiations between the Newark FOP and the city can't fairly place blame in this situation. It's very easy to say " The union should have put the latest offer to a vote " or " why didn't the union make concessions to save those jobs " .. the reality is that union give backs are a slippery slope and when you give in once, the city will ask for it over and over and will sit down at a collective bargaining table and they will lead the negotiations knowing that the union will break. The FOP represents 1,033 cops in Newark and although they have to try to save those 167 jobs, they also have to look out for the good of the countless other members they represent. The city is using the cops as political pawns and it isn't right. Public safety in Newark has always been a problem and being minus 167 cops during the holiday robbery season is a crooks dream.
The union had to play hardball with the city, and now is the time for the ad campaigns and to ratchet up the public pressure which will undoubtedly get some or all of those jobs back.

In an incredible knock to the memories of the Brave Men and Women that have died in the line of duty serving the Utah Highway Patrol, the U.S. 10th circuit court of appeals has ordered the Utah Highway Patrol to remove the 12 foot tall white crosses that are errected along Utah Highways where the Troopers were killed. The crosses have the Utah Highway Patrol insignia on them with the Troopers name.
An atheist group brought the lawsuit saying that this is a violtaion of the 1st ammendment seperation of church and state saying that the cross is a symbol of christianity and nothing else. The 3 judge panel in their infinite wisdom agreed and said that a person can reasonably infer that because Uah is using crosses means that they endorse christianity over other religions.
Like the Attorney General of Utah Said, Utah is three quarters mormon and almost all of the troopers that died were mormons but they chose to memorialize them with a cross because a cross always marks the spot where someone died, no matter what religion they were.
I think this is just another bad decision by the federal courts and another knock to the sensibilities and the moral fiber of this country.

As for these so called " minority law enforcement groups" who are so concerned with this case, the majority of them are corrections officers who have no clue what it's like to be a street cop. They should be embarassed to have held that press conference and said the anti cop things that they said. It's funny how they come out of the wood work when a cop shoots someone but when gang members are killing each other and people are getting robbed, beaten, raped, burglarized and shot each and every day, they say nothing. These jerks are opportunists and nothing more. Everyone ran to back up this guys family and his friends version of what happened and now that his BAC is back at a .13 everyone is quieting down a bit. It kind of reminds me of the tawana brawley case all those years ago... everyone ran to her defense and just like the witnesses in this case, she was a LIAR.
I pray that our brothers are doing well as they try to come to terms with the actions that they were forced to take. These cops made the right decisions and did an outstanding job given the circumstances. Just think, you have a large crowd and an out of control drunk driver, if the officer didn't take the action he did, imagine what the outcome could have been if the car sped into the crowd.
