Back in High School 77-80 we would stop by( in-between classes) Station 7 using the back door and use the (candy machine) . The Firemen where very cool as long as you did not leave a mess . Guess what, nobody I knew ever caused a problem.
Tommy, as you know each fire house "had" a coinciding engine with the firehouse number, Engine 1 Station 1. I am not going to pretend to be some kind of expert on it, but seeing no body else wants to chime in. I will try my theory, but now watch all the responses. In the beginning each fire house had it own name example South Side Engine Co # 4 was Station 4, East Side Engine Co Station 3, Pretty sure it was Chatterton Hose Co Station 5 But it was on Robertson av. <<<<<Scratching Head . Fire Patrol Co Station 1 and so on. @ some point they just numbered the engines with the stations and Headquarters Station 6 began its dual identity, because that's where the Chief was Located. I think the Vollys still use those names today .
I have always been a believer in " if you cant dazzle the with brilliance" Baffle them with, well you know the rest .
as a bonus for putting up with my rant here is a pick that was sent to me today by a friend (Titled Protection From Today)
    Engine -71 Rescue-88 Ladder-32 2512
    Car-17 Truck 1 Patrol Supervisors
    Ambulance -1 Ambulance-3 EMS Supervisor
deck collapse 2 minor injuries transported to WP hosp

    http://www.nynow.org/post/10-years-after-blackout-how-has-power-grid-changed

What were you doing on this date? Working in my hometown grocery store.
How did it effect the operations of Emergency Services in your town? We were slowed down because the apparatus bay doors were not on the emergency generator, so it took a few extra seconds to open them by hand. Monroe County, NY (Rochester area) was not largely effected in emergency responses. However, agencies were called out to assist at nursing homes, hospitals, schools, and aiding local DPW's and highway departments to assist and maintain average daily functions.
Were you ready? Was anybody? No one expected this to happen, but it did. Are we ready for it now? More so than before, IMO.
Any changes today? IMO, no. This contradicts my previous answer, but after seeing the affects of Huricane
Sandy last year proves that we are still not ready for major black outs and power outages. If we were truly ready this would never happen again.
Now, when I say this would never happen again, it's based off of the information of the true national grid. Oh wait, there is none!

Pardon the editing, but this picture roughly resembles the THREE (3) elecetrical grids in the United States. The black out in 2003 turned out to be extrememly minor to what could have happened, meaning 50% of the contiguous 48 states not having power for several hours, or worse, several days. There is an infinite number of ways to prevent the next big black out, but I'm not an electrical engineer, so I'll leave that problem solving to the professionals.

I have to give it up to the dispatchers at 60 & 40 Control,I don't see how you do it .... If my Ambulances, Cars, Units, whatever don't answer the first time I call them. I am on them. Make me call you twice or 3 times , its on . My Uncle died as a result lousy ambulance service . My poison pen set into motion revamping of a county wide als/bls system that still has many flaws but is better now then ever .....

The Burn building had a wood supported roof. If you drilled there you had to make sure your fires didn't get too big or you would be buying a roof
