  4. Seth looks like a Western Diamondback Rattlesnake, Crotalus atrox, VERY nasty indeed. Not endangered at all, these are the ones they go out and get for the round ups.

Gamewell45 , if that Timber was 6' that would be a NYS record

Actually looks like a Mojave Rattlesnake- far more toxic venom. Seth do you have any creosote brush shrubs near your home? These snakes are particularly attracted to it and are often found in close proximity to them.

  5. Buchanan FD received their rescue a little over a week ago. I'm not sure if it's service yet though

The new Rescue 26 was at the firehouse for a few hours last week. It is being fitted for tools and we should be taking delivery later this week.

  6. Has the ME confirmed and listed the cause of death as homicide in this case? Or is it still pending? Just curious..I don't know any details of the case other then remembering that the child was missing. Just wondering if it was homicide or negligence from lack of supervision and the child died of exposure.

Quoting the news report..."The body was found inside a bag". Don't want to jump to any conclusions, but... The part that really kills me as the father of a 4 year-old myself is: The mother stands by the suspect saying "she doesn't believe he would hurt the boy". The boy was under his supervision when according to the suspect "he wandered off". Yeah sweatheart. Standby your man.

  7. Looks great. Is this replacing the current rescue or is this in addition to? What is the actually length of the rig? (sorry if this was already answered) Best of luck with it!

The new rig is almost the exact same length as the one it is replacing. The front and rear bumpers were shortened to fit it in the bay. It looks short due to the addition of an actual crew compartment which seats four firefighters behind the driver and officer. This is one of the main advantages of this vehicle as three of our four current rigs (R-26, E-161 and U-12) can only seat four or fewer personel each. The walk-thru area of the current rig was basically a waste of space. The new box will have a pull-out tray in the rear compartment and a transverse slider at the front end of the box. Everything on the current truck will fit on the new rig.

  8. Can you post some pictures that were taken using the scope? I would like to see how they come out. Each time we have those meteor showers I try to find a dark enough location to set up a long-long open frame shot, however there are too many lamp posts and house lights in the area. I have to figure out a good travel location and plan better.

Try atop of Croton Gorge Dam. THAT's dark!

  9. You took one part of my comment, adjusted it to serve your opportunity to criticize my comment and tried to make it look as though I am 100% against purchasing new equipment. I do and have paid taxes for some time. Part of that money is paid to the Buchanan FD by the village. And as it was years ago when some members thought it prudent to request adding a ladder truck to the fleet, it was brought to the village board meetings and open to public discussion. I said I can see both sides of the argument, replacement of a 35 year old piece of equipment may be necessary. I also support the fact that the employees of the village need a new contract. The only reason I cited the priority being the contracts of workers is that both Montrose and Peekskill have Rescue apparatus and the current piece is still in service. I have done nothing but support the fire department my entire life as a village resident, whether donating monies, buying raffle tickets, providing pictures that I have taken in my own personal time, etc. I am not a member of the fire department but did volunteer in my community for years. Now I have my own priorities and work responsibilities that make it virtually impossible for me to commit to being a member. As well, I have to say, I haven't been asked either. And I know that manpower to calls is a serious issue in our community. This is a public website, you should be careful saying that the village of Buchanan and its residents don't foot the bill, cause ultimately they do. They do when they pay their taxes, and they do when they donate money, and the do when they buy raffle tickets. Money to buy new appartus and equipment doesn't grow on a tree behind the firehouse.

Actually- I quoted your entire comment, and made no attempt to "make it look like" you were against anything. My point, which was perhaps, better explained by ec255 is that as a department, we have not come before the taxpayers of the village to request new/additional funds for a new truck. Monies for fire protection including vehicle replacement are in the contract already. Money which is carefully saved and put aside each year for just such a purchase. You as a taxpayer have not seen a single penny increase in your taxes to pay for this vehicle. We are a small department with VERY limited funds. I invite you to campare exactly how much of your taxes are paid for fire protection with the departments you mention. What does it matter if they have Rescue apparatus? That apparatus is for their fire districts. If you're trying to make a case for consolidation, please- lets not open up THAT can of worms in this thread. It's off point. Part of an agreement to supply fire protection includes having the equipment to provide it. The rescue truck "still in service" is 35 years old and responds to EVERY call in the village. It has grown old, needy, and no longer adequately serves it's purpose. Hope that clears up your issues.

  10. This is what happens when you live somewhere but work somewhere else. I haven't been to any village board meetings in the past year. I didn't even know I was paying for a new Rescue truck. The bread van is a classic and seems to run just fine, in fact saw Mr. Skelly driving it to a call today. I believe he must live in that rig cause he is the only one I ever see in the driver's seat! Although, I believe that the expired contracts with village workers should have been the priority, I can understand replacing a 1975 vehicle. I am sure some members may be torn on that issue as well.

Why do you think that YOU are paying for the new truck? The fire department has nothing to do with the contracts of village workers either. Buchanan Engine Company #1, Inc. is an independant fire company, not a fire district. It has an annual contract with the village to provide fire protection. The department buys and owns the apparatus, and owns the property and building which we operate from. The new truck is being paid for by Buchanan Engine Company, not the Village of Buchanan or it's residents.

  11. Long island is known for the high class rigs and firehouses as a article in newsweek pointed out a few years ago. You can buy a rig, a rig with bells and whistles or you can buy the LI model. I am quoting the article now "they have over 400 heavey rescues on long island compared to 5 in the FDNY. But we all know you need a big new rig for the parade Sorry wrong thread

Newsweek or Newsday? 400 Heavy Rescues between 180 departments...Really?

  12. MY reasoning was simple. If you post something have the evidence. It will then appeal to more people. Maybe some people did not know what I was referring to...through the link they can find out and decide their own opinion. So maybe you did not understand my reason for having the link. Also to a lot of people on this site the pictures would not even begin to effect them nor would they care so it does not matter if there is the link.

Basically, you looked for it, watched it and then decided all by yourself that nobody else should. When you get a chance, let me know what I shouldn't be allowed to see tomorrow.

  13. Ok That's it! Can't you guys in Northern Westchester get a crew together to eat your own shrimp? I mean this is a "simple dinner" and you have to call for mutual aid? Geez- You guys spend all that money on big shiny kitchens with all the latest pots and pans, and then you can't assemble enough guys within your own department to eat one meal by yourselves? I say it's time for consolidation of all meals eaten and promoted to the masses. Take shrimp night, the Buchanan clambake and the Verplanck feast and hold it all on one night in one place so as not to duplicate services within such a small region. It seams like every year you guys have to call in mutual aid just to finish YOUR meal! The commissioners must be turning a blind eye to this. If you had a just one full shift of career shrimp-eaters in place when the dinner bell rang, I can guarantee that every last shrimp would be eaten. Don't forget the two-in two-out rule as there is only room for two at a time in the bathroom.
