That is unreal. Tragic too. I guess its something we all have to think about when we approach a toll booth. I wonder if this isn't part of why Connecticut abolished tolls on 95. Ah well. Thanks for sharing.

According to most, a series of tragic crashes were the reason for the removal of all of CT's tolls.

CT tolls were removed after the collapse of the Myannis River Bridge in Greenwich. I personally was never quite clear on how the two evetns are correlated. However I do know that CT will lose a lot, or maybe all, of its federal funding for roads such as I-95 if it were to begin using tolls again.

HMMMMMMM!

Parkway officials investigate leaked video of fiery crash

By DONALD WITTKOWSKI Staff Writer, (609) 272-7258

Published: Saturday, May 19, 2007

SOMERS POINT — Graphic video of a fatal car crash on the Garden State Parkway is circulating on the Internet, prompting an investigation Friday by the highway's operating agency about how it got leaked.

“We're not happy about it, that goes without saying,†said Joseph Orlando, a spokesman for the New Jersey Turnpike Authority. “That's something we're looking at right now.â€

Orlando said the authority contacted the Web sites YouTube.com and LiveLeak.com to request that the video be removed. Parkway officials believe both sites are in violation of their own policies by showing footage of a person's death. The Press of Atlantic City had also posted the video on the newspaper's Web site but removed it Friday night after hearing of the parkway's objections.

The video, captured by parkway surveillance cameras, shows a car slamming into a toll booth and bursting into flames. Killed in the crash last week was Bernard King, 52, of Lower Township, Cape May County.

“It's disturbing,†Orlando said of the footage.

WMGM-TV 40 aired the video on Thursday night's broadcast, with a warning that it could upset some viewers.

The station has not received any public comments about the video, news director Harvey Cox said Friday night.

Parkway officials have not asked the station to remove it from the WMGM-TV Web site, Cox said.

“I think it's still up on our playlist, (but) it's not on as a top story,†he said.

WMGM-TV has filed an Open Public Records Act request with the parkway for an official copy of the video, Cox said. So far, the station has not received a response. The clip that aired Thursday night was obtained from another source, he said.

Orlando said the parkway authority has “no inkling†about who may have leaked the video to the Web sites. He said the surveillance cameras are controlled by the parkway's operations and toll personnel.

King, a dealer at the Atlantic City Hilton Casino Resort, was traveling south on the parkway when he crashed into the Great Egg Harbor toll plaza in Somers Point around 8:30 a.m. on May 10. State Police said Friday they are still investigating the cause.

Part of the investigation centers on whether King's history of seizures played a role in the crash. King's mother, Edna King, said her son had a seizure about three hours before the accident. The official cause of death is listed as traumatic injuries and burns.

King's car was traveling an estimated 65 mph when it hit the toll booth. The intense fire foiled the rescue attempt of state troopers who rushed to the scene after leaving their nearby truck-exhaust checkpoint.

In regards to the Turnpike, I believe it is owned by the public and the videos are available on some travel site normally! It is unfortunate that the operator died, but as long as someone is not hindering the investigation of a crime than they have no cause. Do you actually see the death?

No...tolls in CT were not removed after the Myannis River Bridge collapse. They were removed after a similar type, firey accident on the Turnpike in which several people were killed.

I read the story about the State Trooper from CT that responded to the Myannis Bridge Collapse. Must have been nuts when he realized he just crossed it to get where he was going!

The cause of the accident appears to have either been a medical emerency that caused the driver to lose consciousness or a possible suicide, this from people in the know. When I saw the video I knew someone had leaked it. None of the traffic cameras in New Jersey are the clear nor do they show continous video, rather the screenm updates every 30 seconds.

This acident occurred during a state-wide emergency management conference in nearby Atlantic City and was discussed on several occassions during the conference. I doubt it was a pursuit, they emergency vehicle that pulls up right up after the accident is dark in color while marked NJSP cars are white.I'm guessing it was either a OEM or homeland security vehicle that was going to the conference.
