Suspected Driver Arrested After Officers Shot

NEW YORK -- A man who police believe was driving an SUV when two officers were shot by his passengers was arrested on charges of attempted murder and possession of a weapon Tuesday, a law enforcement source told WNBC.com.

Lee Woods, aka "Hoody," was driving the vehicle when two New York City police officers approached and were shot by two other men, the source said. Woods was taken into custody at 6 p.m. on Monday.

Woods has a long history of arrests for sale and possession of guns, according to the source. He had been undergoing questioning for nearly 24 hours before he was charged.

New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, during a visit to Washington with Mayor Michael Bloomberg, said Woods was 29 years old.

Two other men, Robert Ellis and Dexter Bostic, both 34 and from Queens, are being sought by police and, a source said, are suspected of firing the shots. A police source told Minton that both men opened fire that morning, each hitting one of the officers involved.

Bostic, who is also known on the street as Marcus Jackson, is an employee of the Five Towns Mitsubishi dealership in Inwood, Long Island. NYPD officers went to the dealership and reviewed security video on Tuesday.

The black BMW SUV was believed to be stolen from the dealership, said an official who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the investigation had not been completed. State records show the parolee has assault, robbery and weapons convictions.

The NYPD has announced that the reward for information that leads to the capture of each man is $32,000 per suspect. The Patrolmen's Benevolent Association, the union that represents NYPD officers, has contributed an additional $25,000 to that reward.

"We are infuriated by this act of depravity against two police officers who were doing their job when fired upon without warning," PBA PBA president Patrick J. Lynch said in a statement. "The 23,000 members of the New York City PBA will not rest until these cowardly thugs are brought to justice."

One of the officers, Belarus-born Russel Timoshenko, 23, remained in grave condition on Tuesday with a severe head wound. His family was at his bedside.

"I'm just praying for a miracle," said Victoria Gentile, a neighbor of the Timoshenko's family on Staten Island.

The second officer, Herman Yan, was in stable condition with wounds to the chest and forearm. Police said it appeared that his bullet-resistant vest saved his life.

The NYPD launched a massive manhunt for the three occupants in the vehicle.

The incident occurred at 2:30 a.m. Monday in Brooklyn's Crown Heights section after the two officers used a laptop computer in their marked patrol car to do a random check of the license plates on the BMW. After discovering the plates didn't match the car, they turned on their flashing lights and pulled the car over.

As the uniformed officers followed procedure by approaching from either side of the SUV, investigators believe two of the occupants opened fire without warning, hitting Timoshenko first.

"Seeing his partner fall to the ground and hearing shots, Officer Yan returned fire, but he too was hit with gunfire," Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said at a news conference.

Detectives who were canvassing the area while investigating an unrelated double homicide heard the shots and stopped to help the officers. Other police cars arrived moments later and rushed the victims to the hospital.

Investigators later determined that the SUV, and the plates from the second vehicle, had been stolen from Five Towns Mitsubishi in Inwood, N.Y., on Long Island near the Queens border. Inside it were two .45-caliber shell casings and trash from a recent meal of fried chicken from a fast-food restaurant, police said.

A security camera from a daycare center at the intersection where the shooting took place captured grainy images of the officers approaching the stolen car. It also shows Timoshenko taking fire and falling backward, then Yan getting caught in a shootout, police said.

Investigators also obtained footage from a second camera showing three men ducking into a driveway next to a building after ditching the stolen vehicle a few blocks from the shooting. Three weapons -- a .45-caliber handgun, a 9mm pistol and a Tec-9 automatic pistol -- were discovered behind the building.

The NYPD did not make public any of the videotape.

Let's all wait and see if Al Sharpton decides to comment on this incident. Another good job by the NYPD on getting these perps quick.....My prayers go out to the families of these brave, yet underpaid, men.

Hang'em high in the street right after the 1st degree murder trial if the P.O. dies(God forbid).

Now that would be justice and a deterrent.
