I will pose the exact same scenario I've posed a million times on this forum:
At the exact moment that YOU call a Mayday, would you rather have:
    A. The team of 18-21 year olds fresh out of Firefighter 1 standing on the front lawn, ready to go with equipment.
    -OR-
    B. The elite "Special Operations" FAST crew in their customized FAST rig still en route from 3 towns away.
People are acting like the basics of a RIT operation are some form of black magic attainable only by the saltiest, most senior Firefighters. Sure, would it be preferable to have a bunch of experienced senior guys to do it? Sure. But the situation isn't always going to allow for that.
Say it with me: RIT/FAST is NOT a specialized unit. It is a basic function that must be performed at ALL fires, just like fire attack, ventilation, search and rescue, water supply, etc. So ALL Firefighters need to be trained to perform it... Are some people going to gravitate towards that training more than other aspects? Sure, as with anything else in the fire service. But its not a something that any of us can say is "not our job." It absolutely NEEDS to be a part of basic Firefighter training.

When we added hoods (number of years ago) we never really looked at them, we sort of just went with a hood is a hood. We had a house fire, fire on the 2nd floor. conditions in the living room on floor #1 - No heat, very light haze. 2nd floor bedroom, heavy heat and smoke. Video from CP shows the bedroom window blowing out, as a backdraft occurred in the bedroom.
Firefighters on the 1st floor were standing up, waiting to go to the 2nd floor, all wearing SCBA and hoods.
The backdraft caused the living room ceiling to drop, and the members were forced to the floor from the heat. One member received 2nd degree burns thru his single ply hood.
There was no heat to feel 10 seconds before he was burned. We have changed our attitude and understand that rapidly changing conditions make the old, I need to feel the heat a poor indicator.

The NIOSH recommended level is no more than 35ppm for 8 hours.
But of more importance both the OSHA & NIOSH standards are for a health adult. Lower levels can cause serious cardiac, respiratory and other medical issues in people who have sever health issues. it can also cause brain damage at levels lower than 50ppm in infants and in a fetus (without any side effects on the mother).

Just something to think about... Do you know the flammable range of of CO?
In addition to being a lethal gas for reasons of oxygen deprivation, it is a volatile substance.
Symptoms or not, CO calls shouldn't be toyed with. They deserve a minimum of an engine.
  13. x129K liked a post in a topic by v85 in CO Calls, What's the Rush?
Do you need a code 3 response for CO no symptoms probably not, but I would think you would need more than one person right. Isn't a suspected CO leak considered IDLH, meaning you need 2-in 2-out with SCBAs? At least our fire department treats it as such.
In the Maryland agency I was dispatching for, a CO NOSYMPTOMS call type got 1 engine. a CO SYMPTOMS call got 1 engine and 1 ambulance

Yes, those guys were definitely the ones when it came to Building Construction, Fire Prevention, and investigation.
I saw Ed Sere mentioned. I only knew him for one thing, but it was a big change in how we operate. Ed took us out of the ladder belt rappelling method, and taught us figure eights and beeners using kernmantle rope. He had a 2-part rescue harness for a victim that I am surprised hasn't sold millions. Made of webbing loops, it could easily and hastily be put on a conscious or unconscious victim.
Then there were the Westchester Community College classmates. Those guys, like me were there on the GI Bill. The Bronx Bunch, however, were older and worked though he Burn, baby, burn era. They did trial and error tactics at not less than one multi-alarm job every night. From them came the trench cut and much more. In my class were also great men like Silvio Burigo, Capt,NRFD and Asst Chief ED Dunn, YFD. My success in the FD stems from "I wanna be like them."
Then, a good friend, Tommy Brennan, Capt, FDNY, probably best known for his Random Thoughts on the last page of Fire Engineering. Most readers of Fire Engineering read the mag from the back page first. His thoughts were not random at all. Tommy was a very focused individual and when he first met you he would ask you a few questions before he decided to talk to you.
Finally, the guy in the mirror. He always knew if I was doing the right thing.

Looking at your post above and going to your profile all we see is that you're a male from Yonkers, so what's your beef if you're not even doing what you've stated above?

Yesterday morning Dan, had a PIAA in front of Jack's Auto, car vs. tractor trailer with extrication, the guys used the newly purchased cutter/spreader on the Engine to pop the door. Saw one of the fire commissioners shortly after the accident and he said that purchase already paid for itself on the rigs first run.

Remember that when you take your department car to the NYS Chief's Show at Turning Stone Casino. And you guys are worried about a commissioner's car at Woodbury Commons.

So if the city wants to play it that way, I would get EVERY male and female that failed and aren't hired, file a class action discrimination case, and make the city pay.
I'm not saying these people should be hired, but they can take the city for money if they think its funny to play number games.

Every bit of this story is true. The Post is a rag, and a story like this about 1 person is a little rough, but it's a 100% true. There's a lot of men out there who couldn't complete the run and are not employed by this job.....

So, you're ASSUMING that crime isn't committed in rural areas?
Look I am very pro 2nd amendment and exercise my right to carry almost daily. However, I have to agree with many of the members here and say that firearms do not belong on ambulances.
When I rode EMS, there were several LEO's that I rode with who would conceal carry while riding the ambulance. Never once did it make me feel any safer. But you know what did? My training, experience, good scene size-up and knowing the PD was there or could be in seconds.
As others have said, many times your best line of defense is a good offense and using your brain. If you can walk (or run) from a potentially bad situation, then you should do so. That goes beyond working in emergency services.
I will chalk up your attitude and thoughts to your young age and inexperience. As you progress in emergency services, I think you'll change your views a bit.
Pay attention and take the advise of senior men and women and stay safe.

There s no such thing as EMS Command. There is an EMS Branch with a branch manager and maybe trage group, treatment groups, morgue group..etc. an EMS official might be in the command post to offer advice but rarely is in EMS in charge of a scene. PD, FD, or bth will be in "command" of an incident. The highest trained EMS person has decision making capabilities when it comes to patient care, movement, and transport. Every EMS person needs to become intimately familiar with NIMS and ICS..at least to the 200 level.

All three agencies work together to provide the best possible care to the citizens and visitors of Yonkers. (A politically correct response?)
