I'm curious when this came in. I saw smoke on that hill while coming over the TZ Bridge, about 0600.

Tarrytown's Hackley School engulfed by flames

(Original publication: August 4, 2007)

A major fire has destroyed a large portion of the Hackley School, a private college prep school at 293 Benedict Ave. More than 100 firefighters were on the wooded campus by 8 a.m. today, battling the blaze which severely damaged, if not destroyed, a large stone structure that appeared to be the school's main building. The school's headmaster was refusing to allow a photographer onto the private campus. The non-sectarian, co-educational school was founded in 1899 and educates students from kindergarten through 12th grade.

Here is the posting from WNBC-TV's website:

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. -- Police say a fire has engulfed a building at a private school in Westchester Saturday morning.

Tarrytown police say the blaze apparently started around 4:15 a.m. in the library at Hackley School, a private academy that has both day and boarding students. It's not clear whether anyone was on campus at the time.

A message left at the school wasn't immediately returned this morning.

Firefighters are still at the school's campus on Benedict Avenue.

The school has day students in kindergarten through twelfth grade, and boarding students in ninth through twelfth grades. It was founded in 1899.

AP reports lighting strike

Prep school blaze damages historic library

1:43 PM EDT, August 4, 2007

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. (AP) _ A raging fire apparently ignited by lightning strike destroyed a historic stone library and damaged two adjoining buildings Saturday at a prestigious Ivy League prep school once attended by Malcolm Forbes and Keith Olbermann, authorities said.

The blaze at the Hackley School, which opened in suburban Westchester County in 1899, started in the library around 4:15 a.m. during a violent thunderstorm, said Tarrytown police Officer Jose Ojito. It spread from the library to a pair of surrounding buildings before it was brought under control hours later, he said.

Firefighters from towns across the county were summoned, with more than 100 eventually arriving to battle the blaze on the wooded campus, authorities said. Ojito said there were no injuries reported in the fire, which left fire equipment and firefighters scattered about the lawn of the smoky campus.

The blaze also damaged a rectory and church alongside the library.

The Kaskel Library was one of the first buildings constructed at the school, opening during the 1902-03 school year. The library boasts a collection of over 30,000 items, including books, periodicals, VHS/DVD videos, CDs and audiobooks, according to the school's web site.

The school, located about 30 minutes north of Manhattan, educates students from kindergarten through high school in three levels _ lower, middle and upper schools. Among the exclusive school's better-known students over the years are television newscaster Olbermann, actor George Hamilton, journalist Joe Klein and the late billionaire Forbes.

The leafy campus, founded on property once owned by widowed philanthropist Francis Brewster, was featured in the 1990 Harrison Ford legal thriller "Presumed Innocent." The Hackley School is a member of the prestigious Ivy Preparatory School League.
