FDNY Union seeks same raise as NYPD

A contract-arbitration award that gave cops a raise of nearly 10 percent sparked a demand by firefighters yesterday that the deal - which will cost the city $50 million - be extended to them.

The Uniformed Firefighters Association yesterday said it was exercising its right to reopen its most recent contract negotiations to demand a "comparable wage increase."

Now does this mean FDNY wants the same give-backs too?!

You have to be kidding me, right? What you just said makes NO sense. I'm not even sure I understand it!

As to the rest of you, what the hell is so wrong with the re-opener clause?! It's called parady, something that Ray Kelly has saught after forever. We're looking for the same raise you got. If we get it, it's good for us and it's good for you too! Starting pay is fine, top payis not! Every city agency should be backing the other in search for better wages from the city. Nassua cops make more than NYPD, Jersey City FD makes more than FDNY. We're both behind the payroll 8-ball. One department doing better will mean the others will have a better opportunity then next time your contract is up for renewal.

The UFA is looking for a percentage parody, GOOD! I hope the cops do the same next time fire gets a raise. One agency doing well in contract doesn't hurt the other, it HELPS!!

As for give backs: No wouldn't like to give back 10 or my 20 vacation days.........maybe it's cause I only get enough vacation hours to take off 4 days a year......

Give backs suck, you should never have to pay for your own raise.

Not to mention, at the end of all this.....the cops didn't even get the contract they deserve, so it's a shame all around.

Bro. I agree with you 100%. Where's the parody though between members of FDNY who are assigned to SOC and those who aren't? Don't SOC members get 12% over a regular ff. on your JOB or something like that? I heard that deal in your last Contract created alot of riff between FDNY members. Do ESU Cops get more then a standard patrolemen on NYPD because they're part of an elite unit? What about those assigned to the antiterrosim units and other Special OPS Units of NYPD? Just curious. Emergency Service and the other NYPD Special Operations units do not make hazard pay. They are at the same level with the precinct cops. This is something that the PBA wants. This is to avoid any type of division among the ranks.

That being said. ESU avation and a few other units have members promoted to Detective specialist. This gives them a boost in their pay. Years ago, there was a program started then killed just as fast that would have allowed officers to be promoted to Detective Specialist and remin out on the road for patrol. This was to try and keep seasoned vets out on the streets and in precincts while giving them a little recognition for their hard work etc etc. Well that program died because of the PBA not wanting to loose members (DEA-Detectives PBA- Police Officers) they viewed it as an attempt to divide the membership. All the Detective Specialist that were made got the choice of either giving up their shield or get transfered to a unit that had detectives.

I'm not sure if the city really needs Police. Because according to Ray Kelly , Bloomberg and especially Gullianni. They all say it's THEM that are reducing the crime in the city. To reconrd numbers no doubt. Yet I have NEVER seen any of them walking a foot post, riding in a radio car or standing for hours on some detail. How can they do it? it's like magic. And if they can do it from their offices. Why can't the regular cop on the beat stay home and remove crime altogether? Food for thought.

PS.. I would like the FD work schedual myself. Who wouldn't want to work 2 days a week!!

What the hell do you care? You don't even live in the City. God knows if you were living pay check to pay check for putting out fires, or getting shot at or treating and transporting 14 patients a tour your opinions would make a quick 360.

Hope the EMS union jumps on this bandwagon...

Now i know why my girl's father (Lt. in FDNY) told me never to work for NYC...

I wish I had a good answer for you with regard to our "12 percenters"

No, there is no parody there. Members of Sq., Res., and some SOC support eng. and tru. companies get extra money plain and simple. Here's the issue though. The city offered the 12 percent to SOC. The money was sourced from Federal funds (I believe). Either way, how are you going to turn down money in a contract? When it comes to raises, or any extra money at all, you can't turn it down. What are you going to say? "No, it's all of us or none of us!" You can't. Hopefully it helps get money for the rest of us in the long run.

For the record here only 5 Rescue Companies, 7 Squad Companies and the 4 Haz Tech Engines receive the 12%. The Rescue and Haz Mat Battalions also receive the 12%. No other units receive the 12% the Decon Engines, SOC Support Trucks, CPC Trucks are not compensated at all.

Here we go....I didn't hear the FD complaining when PD got the shaft last time....

Well you we not listening then because when the PD got the shaft the FD was pretty much forced to accept the same deal FDNY probies salary was equally reduced and give backs were required to make equal concessions to the PD deal. We lost 15 hours of vacation (not the adjusted tour as some think). Additionally new FDNY lieutenants were stretched to 4 years to top pay and start at a pay slightly higher than Firefighters. In essence when the PD recieved the previously bad arbritration award it effected all unions.

As for parity it remains to be seen if it was broken. The value of the concessions made by the PBA are pretty extreme and something not easy for the FD to match unless you want to go to Medicals and Education Day on your day off and get tours rescheduled like they conceeded to.

The 12% was a little mysterious but in many opinions was meant as a precedent for the PBA who had a beef with the to pay ESU. I do believe ESU members are detective specailists and earn 14% more the same amount originally proposed by Hanley to Cassidy but was lowered to 12% because Fire Marshal's a promotion already only make 12% more.

Haz-Mat Co. 1 gets the 12% as it was originally proposed by the city for them but through negotations extended to others.

Spoke with Pat Bankin this weekend,(EMS union President), at ems memorial. Trying to get all mos that work in hot zone to get hazard pay. I think could be wrong ( had a few cocktails in me at the time) said was going to be able to get the same raises as the rest of the city services (fd supression and pd). If this is so keep up the great work Pat. Will be coming to work back up north very soon.

I flipping hate the 12% money. Odds are when the poop hits the fan it will be you average line unit who is on scene first. Haztac and Rescue units usually respond in with a heads up as to the conditions they are facing. So the argument becomes about all their extra training, so I say train them on OT for their reward. Otherwise you're paying two people who 99% of the time do the same job a different wage.

I think the cocktails were getting to you. We're hoping for significant raises, but we're currently headed towards arbitration. Our contract covers different years and doesn't have parity provisions that PD and Fire have. Besides, the recent bump given to PD wasn't a pay raise. It was an increase in work hours. No where else would your boss increasing your work week be seen as a raise.
