YFD Water Tender 1 I/S 0300hrs.

11 posts in this topic

At approx. 0200 hours this date Water Tender 1 was placed in standby mode - The city had widespread water outages due to a main beak in the high service system. The 5000 gallon tender was manned and standing by to respond to any fire call. The tender is designed to buy time until a relay can be established. This would not be used to create a shuttle w/ quick dump & refill - but bridge the gap w/ the 5000 gallons. Normal water service was restored approx 0500 hours

Great to see a well thought concept put to real work. Just one question. With such a large area that Yonkers covers, where do you stage such an apparatus to minimize response time in the event its needed when on "standby"?

Thats an old ex Military M967 fuel tanker. The pony pump that the military had on it could move 600 GPM offloading, and could selfload at 300 GPM. On road, they would haul 5000 gallons, offroad 3,800 but that had a HUGE sloshing factor, even with the baffled tank.

They made for nice tankers. Somewhere I have all the manuals for that thing..

It's good to see some military surplus in current use.

It is not a surplus fuel tanker - that tanker was manufactured to carry water - it makes a big difference in the GVW - water is much heavier than fuel oils - that is why many converted fuel tankers are involved in accidents when used by FD's as tankers

Water Tender is at Station 11 for now.

And the water at my place is officially at low pressure and very poop-colored. See video:
